There actually were plans to use her in the first Batman Beyond movie, the idea being in her old age she'd gotten so obsessed with Batman she'd started creating younger clones of him to be her sons/lovers. The idea was rejected as being too disturbing.
I'm glad they didn't, it feels really base off from the last episodes of her in the show and it still weird me out she trying to get difk on her side THAT WAY

That's really out of character for Selina.
Selina had her own Alfred in the form of her assistant, a young woman named Maven But after cat scratch fever, we never saw her again. I think after Selina turned into a full time thief, she cut ties with her only friend, thus showing her far she has gone since catwalk.
It also serves as another parallel to Bruce, as he would never cut ties with Alfred.
It's a possibility, although Maven (not candice) did returned in a TNBA comic in which Selina end up in hospital after saving Batman from a explosive trap and Maven visits her, showing that still cares for Selina
Alfred raised Bruce so in a way that be like cutting all ties with a father who's done nothing but love you

I always headcanoned Maven to be like Holly Robinson, a girl Selina rescued from a hard life and helped her by giving her the job as her secretary.
I think after selina got caught maven wouldn't be able to have gainful employment aa her assistant without drawing attention for Selina's crimes so she had to part ways

I much prefer takes on catwoman when she's actually moral and not an untrustworthy two faced kleptomaniac, like in Reeves' Batman when she's just surviving, stealing only when necessary and caring for her roommate Annika, as well as risking her life for Batman when he needed help.

I liked the Zoe Kravitz version, and other similar versions. She's a thief but her reasons are understandable.
I think the biggest problem with Catwoman in BTAS is she didn't have enough of an edge to her. She never got to be the main antagonist (unless you count "Scratch my Back," which is still debatable). Also, the mystery to the character was taken away too early by having her be arrested in her first story, which then leads to several episodes of her not being able to be Catwoman.

its been bothering me for years now that Cat Woman is never an antagonist, if shes in anything shes most likely going to be an antihero (or just a straight up hero). Its more understandable for Harley Quinn because shes more sympathetic, i dont understand it with CW
@@hunterh4064 In "DC Superhero Girls" Catwoman is more of an antagonist. She's modeled off of Eartha Kitt (particularly in her voice) and has quite a mean streak to her, though sometimes she'll switch sides to fight against a common threat.

I always felt like BTAS episodes were tougher on Catwoman than Harley or the Joker. The writers just wanted to keep her as jewel thief but not much room to show much growth beyond that.

Catwoman is the literal Cat Burglar. Plus I love the relationship between her and Batman, it reminds me of the relationship between Knuckles and Rouge especially considering that both Catwoman and Rouge are both jewel thieves.😺💎
Although I always liked the BTAS design of Catwoman when it comes to characterization I think she was much better in The Batman from 2004, I'd say the same thing about the Penguin, not all the classic rogues worked very well in BTAS.
You are not wrong. The Batman also wrote the Riddler much better than TAS (even if some fans hate his design).

If you check out "DC Superhero Girls," Catwoman is a total badass, and the Penguin is a highschool mob boss. It's awesome and hilarious.

I dunno. It works with the voice, but I always vastly preferred the suit-and-tie Riddlers. It’s an excellent way to get across his utter egotism and delusion, that he’s treating these VERY significant acts of murder (and even attempted terrorism in some cases) like simple white collar crimes.
Honestly, The Batman could have changed their Riddler to be someone like Cluemaster and I wouldn’t bat an eye.
Catwoman's 'robbing' fixation also seemed to be targeted towards CERTAIN rich individuals, not just picking random joe schom moneybags since in the end that would make her a common theif like all the other individuals. At least from whatvi can recall from the animated eras, she prefered rich targets who were shitty people or easy marks she assumed would take the bait. She seemed to have studied her targets before going after them and had a preferred type.
I remember in The Batman series, she was particular to whom she'd hook up with in order to get cash and went after Bruce because of one important thing; he was her age and hot (money). The best part was he ended up catching her off guard in his behavior because she still gave her money that she didn't expect bor she had to steal and there's this sense that even though she donated it to a good cause, Bruce's goody-two-shoes check botched her plan and also frustrated her because she lost a chance at robbing him but also was proven wrong right in front of her face.
She did like Alfred's nachos though.

Ah, yes so they went with the GRAY BDSM suit instead. 😂 Seriously, i think her original green dress is tge only costume she had that wouldn't fit in a kinky sex dungeon party but knowing how people are, who knows.
Edit: Okay, i don't remember the episode where she's trying to save the animal taxidermies but even if she got them, what was the next step? Was she going to extract their dna in hopes of returning them or....was she just going to keep them? You're right in that she's just stealing to steal because if she cares that much about animal welfare, she's stuck in-between two shitty options with those things.
1) Owning them would constantly remind her that they're dead and she's powerless to bring them back.
2) Burning them erases their history all together
So in the end, if she wasn't planning to give them to a place that fould properly study them, she WAS just taking them because she didn't want anyone else to have them as she put herself as the moral authority to decide who was the guardian of animals. Yes, it does make her a hypocrite but it plays well to why she is an anti-Batman. She is more or less doing things for a dopamine and power rush, especially if the outcome of others is more of an annoyance to her than part of the plan.
And the extinction line... survival of the fittest in the most harsh way you can lay it out. She's a cat AND cold. 😂
Also, her expression at 10:27 is priceless. I loved the art direction for this show.

I kinda agree on the taxidermy thing - especially since, being cat obsessed, Selina would have known that the thylacine (aka Tasmanian Tiger) bears no relation to any known feline.

As you mentioned 'The Voice of Scooby Doo, Frank Welker' I could only think of the original Gen 1 depiction of Megatron laughing, whom was also voiced by Frank Welker.
He is a good Megatron, but I am a bit biased on David Kaye's take from Beast Wars.

I always thought that the crew made her more unlikeable each time only to push Batgirl and Barbara.
In the original comics when Barbara/Batgirl first appeared, she was actually older and supposed to be more Bruce's age, because the idea was to originally at some point maybe set them up together but they have since obviously aged her down, and her dating Nightwing and all that
0:41 To this day I still find weird that most of these stories got modern versions in new books (ex: the joker first apperance was retold in Ed Brubaker's The Man who laugh) except the Catwoman first apperance. It has alot of potential for modern take, keeping the plot of the stolen necklace in the ship but doing some changes, like having Batman be the one on the case, allowing the story to focus on him instead of Robin (I think he shouldn't even be in this new version) and showing him developing his attraction for Selina
I think The Cat doesn’t get retold because Frank Miller’s reimagined origin for her is so prevalent. I don’t think it would fit very nicely with what was established in Year One.

@@SerumLake That's possible but even Hugo Strange was changed in post-crisis continuity and that didn't stop DC from retelling the Monster Men story from golden age, so they could do the same with Selina. Plus, since Catwoman first apperance didn't reveal her origin, her and Batman meeting in the boat could happen after the whole Frank Miller origin without changing anything.
@@SerumLake catwoman gets even more tragic backstories in recent graphic novels and comics, like in the under the moon DC graphic novel has her as a street urchin foster kid who gets separated from her single mother and steals to help other kids , and in a ya novel she's a former teen street fighter, browler and master thief who is a rival and love interest for Luke fox and only does crimes to help her sick sister Maggie Kyle

An incompetent parent does far more to damage a child than any comic book.
Depressing seeing her slowly fall from highly expective society, but I kind of enjoyed her DCAU arc more than in a lot of subsequent adaptations, the Arkhamverse iteration included. Plus, gotta love both her outfits, compared to the showy purples of The Long Halloween.
Also, headcanon note: I think she did her last ever heist in the Chase Me short film paired with Mystery of the Batwoman. A bit anticlimactic and silently somber, but isn't that the perfect point to end her aimless long nights of thievery and trickery?
Addendum: Thank the stars she never returned in that planned second Batman Beyond flick. Former master thief she may have been, but psychotically bitter, clone birthing scientist she ain't!
I wish they would have used her purple costume with her hair hanging out the back for BTAS. In my opinion it’s her best design.
One random quote that I like from The Cat and The Claw is Batman upon being surprised that Red Claw is a woman (played by Kate Mulgrew, notably) tells her that he is an equal opportunity crime fighter.

The grey suit is more symbolic of her morality, but I prefer the Darwyn Cooke version or the purple long halloween suit
I’ll be frank, the episode catwalk was what made me fond of the Bruce and talia pairing.
Years later my thought on Bruce’s love life changed to apathy but considering how popular Bruce and Selina is I felt like saying my piece.

This show was amazing each episode was like a living comic
Cat woman is a cat burglar. This type of criminal stands out from other types of thieves and robbers because they generally don’t actually cause anyone harm or do any significant damage to anything. I think that because of her lack of violence compared to many other Batman villains, she is more palatable as an extended member of the bat family. She’s absolutely a kleptomaniac, but she doesn’t kill, which aligns with Batman’s code. Even her main weapon, her whip, lacks lethality compared to almost every other kind of melee weapon.
I've said this before but even as kid when I saw The Cat and the Claw for the first time I remember just not really caring for Catwoman in BTAS and I found her kind of bland. I think they leaned a bit too much on her being an animal activist and animal lover like for example with the episode Tyger, Tyger which felt weird for a post Silver Age version of Catwoman and I think it it detracted from the cool factor of the character. I felt like she was missing the sass, sarcasm and overconfidence that Catwoman was known for. Like I said in the comment of the Watchtower Database's podcast channel The Podtower is that I really appreciate about the last season of BTAS is that they made Catwoman's personality and motives much more in line with how she is in the comics, especially in TNBA. Design-wise I was never really blown away unfortunatelly by her BTAS look. The black portion on her mask made look a bit like how they drew masks in comics in the Golden and Silver Age which personally I found a bit distracting and the yellow belt made the attire a bit too visible which for cat burglar, that's not really something you would like. The gray suit I think was fine but I've always prefered Catwoman's suit being all-black. The blonde hair I understand was a studio mandate so she would look more like Michelle Pfeiffer similar with Penguin until TNBA where they were allowed to give them more comic accurate designs but for me I don't really like Catwoman with blonde hair except when she is being played by Michelle Pfeiffer. I think Adrienne Barbeau did a really good job but unfortunately like I've said before I didn't think that Kevin Conroy and Adrienne Barbeau had amazing chemistry, especially compared to his phenomenal chemistry with Dana Delany as Andrea Beaumont, Helen Slater and Olivia Hussey as Talia al Ghūl (although of the two I liked Olivia Hussey more as Talia), Susan Eisenberg as Wonder Woman or Grey DeLisle who voiced Catwoman in the Arkham games. Adrienne Barbeau was just never really the voice I imagined for Catwoman when I read comics. When I think of Catwoman voices my brain usually goes to Gina Gershon from The Batman 2004 series, Grey DeLisle from the Arkham games and Laura Bailey from the Batman Telltale games. Ironically my favourite appearance of Catwoman in the DCAU is the short film "Chase Me" which was a special feature for Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman. By the way, for Catwoman from The Batman series, if you ever want to revisit that version I recommend the episodes "The Cat and the Bat" and "Ragdolls to Riches."

Agreed. TAS Catwoman is too serious and gloomy instead of the sassy, playful and confident thief, aspects that help in her interactions with Batman, who's already stern and serious.
"The Cat and the Claw" almost plays like a backdoor pilot for a Catwoman series. There is a lot of effort to give Catwoman a "supporting cast" with Maven. I'd argue that of all the villains, Catwoman is objectively superior in the New Batman Adventures. You really don't need a lot of the previous B:TAS episodes to get "You Scratch My Back" (it's enough to know that Batman doesn't trust her).
I didn't like that Batman captured her in the end of "Cat and Claw." She aided him in stopping a bio-terrorist from killing all of Gotham but he took her to prison for stealing a wealthy woman's jewelry. A thing he could have just told her to return immediately. She would do it but then assume another alias and continue thievery and slip out of his cusps .... for the moment at least. It's kind of a tradition that Batman isn't capable of completely getting on over on Selina. She's always the one who he has a soft spot for since she is generally not going to kill anyone and doesn't want to cause citizens trouble.
I think they should have brought in Helena Wayne in Batman Beyond and how she would interact with other characters and in that Justice League Unlimited episode Once and Future thing that Bruce would have the same problem that Green Lantern was going through?
That would be interesting, specially since Helena could create some drama with Terry, making him feel that the mantle should be given to her because she's Batman daugther, only for Helena to reject and decide to stay as the Huntress (which fits the themes of Batman Beyond about family and free will vs fate, that blood doesn't define who the person is and they can choose their own path).

Her becoming a mentor to a Catwoman Beyond (or Catman Beyond; would rather prefer someone whom Terry McGinnis won't get romantically smitten, since we already got Melanie Walker/Ten of the Royal Flush Gang) would have also worked.

Honestly, I'm fond of Catwoman being a anti-villain with a noble streak. I think it provides an excellent contrast to the other villains, and complicates Batman.
If Batman vowed himself to stop what happened to his family happen to others (being murdered in the street for petty reasons) then how would he react to someone who steals normal possessions from people he himself would oppose (the rich and the corrupt)? Especially if the theft is for noble reasons?
Batman is a classic vigilante, and if Catwoman is more morally grey and sympathetic without being a tragic monster like some of the others, her relationship with Bruce complicates his brand of heroics. Which I think is fun!
I guyess "hypocrite" is the best word to describe her, even better than crminal or seductress.

- The Batman 2004 (with perhaps Teen Titans, featuring what may be the same Dick Grayson/Robin, right after)
- Batman Begins and The Dark Knight (The Dark Knight Rises is a dependent taste; feel free to watch that or not)

Was it really hypocritical of Selina to throw the stuffed mountain lion in the fire? Taxidermy is a pass-time for the high falutin' class she despises. Maybe it was disrespectful to the animal but it seems kind of silly to think she abandoned her ideals (in as much you can take that seriously) when she's never shown harming a live animal.
I agree that taxidermy is gross, but that’s all that remains of those poor creatures.. Note that after this point her animal activist activities come to an end. In fact, I may be misremembering, but we don’t even see her with multiple cats again - Isis shows up at least once, but that’s it.

I think I like the Arkham games costume for her the most with the goggles which in a lot of iterations seem to be tactical goggles which would make sense. Some people will complain that a skintight costume is bad because it shows off her form, but given she's a thief who needs to do a lot of physically demanding activities like climbing, sneaking and parkour, the less wind resistance, less things getting snagged on antennas, debris or the like and less things for someone to grab onto in a fight, the better.
Red Claw is a villain who flat-out bombed on the show (although I loved a pre-Voyager Kate Mulgrew's vocal performance).
6:56 Red Claw was a James Bond type villain put onto a Batman show.
Honestly, I would love a Catwoman who only steals from the very rich and invests her money in good causes. Much better than the much more self centered version in the comic. I could actually respect that woman as Batmans partner.

Despite enjoying BTAS, I'm not fan of their portrayal of Catwoman. Besides the fact she's too bland and serious (her being more playfull and confident it's what helps to make her interactions with Batman, who is already dark and stern, so enjoyable) making her a animal activist just feels like Poison Ivy ripp off. Selina being just a poor woman who becomes thief is much more simple origin and helps to justify her "robin hood behavior".
I'm also not a fan that Batman captured her in the end of "Cat and Claw". It's more interesting when she's able to escape or Batman let her go, similar Lupin III and Zenigata dynamic, showing Batman knows the difference between a major threat (like Joker or Ra's Al Ghul) that needs to stop now and a common thief like Selina, that he can catch later.

Yeah, knowing Batman, it doesn't make much sense he'd bother with a nonviolent criminal who steals fancy baubles from the uber-rich. He's not a cop, after all.

I sure hope the sequel to The Batman 2022 is also great. Won't want another dud that ruins even the first film, like Wonder Woman 1984.

Honestly, and this is a controversial opinion... I like Catwoman more as an animal rights activist.
I like how the comics version of Catwoman became more of an antihero, and even warming up to Bruce to the point of almost marrying him. Unfortunately, like Spider Man's writers, Batman's writers feel like doesn't deserve to have anything resembling a happy married life, so she changed her mind at the last second. But their relationship also played part in one of the greatest Superman/Batman stories of all:
The one where Clark Kent, Bruce, Lois Lane and Selena went to an amusement park on a double date.
If I had a nickel for everytime a moral panic completely derailed an industry I'd have at least 4 nickels.

I wonder if the cat Isis was inspired by the Star Trek episode, Assignment: Earth. Gary Seven had a cat named Isis who had similar traits to the BTAS Isis, although the Star Trek version could change into a human woman.

Catwoman being so temperamental always made her annoying as a Batman love interest. She'd flirt, but never fully commit. Her deepest commitment seemingly to the thrill of crime, which always got in the way of Batman's devotion to justice.
It would have been interesting to have seen Selena in Batman Beyond, or at least see what she was doing in her old age maybe she was training a new Catwoman, you can see in the batcave in the very first episode of Batman Beyond that Selena's costume is in one of the cases... You have to freeze frame to see it. So either Selena gave Bruce her suit or he got it from GCPD, then again I could be completely wrong.

Adrienne Barbeau has a very sexy voice and I love Selina's design, looking like Pamela's blonde cousin. But I wasn't the biggest fan of either costume. First reminded me too much of the cats from Lady & The Tramp. Second was better but still kinda bland.

She didn't have a lot of substance in BTAS which is sad because she is one of my favorite characters. If only the background story involving her being the illegitimate child of Carmine Falcone had been around at the time. Would've loved to have seen that.

She wears it as a costume in the Catwoman Hunted movie. That movie is one of the best DC animated films and a fun Catwoman adventure.

The bizarre cat mask was her FIRST COSTUME. SHOW SOME RESPECT. Its also her best costume for how bizarre it is. Giant realistic cat head for the win. I love catwomans bizarre colorful costumes. Idk why you're so mad. Nowadays she looks so bland so I guess you prefer realistic and bland

Typo in the chapters
Gotta say the way they handle her character in BTAS and especially TNBA made her cone off very unlikable. The Catwoman in the comics was much more of a Antihero.
Catwoman is not a villain but still a criminal at least
Also, She wasn't deceptive. she was as evil, dangerous, sadistic, mentally sick, murderous, psychopathic monster just like Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, joker, Two-face, Scarecrow and Talia al ghul. She tried to kill or manipulate Batman remember?

In some ways she is an Anti-hero.
I hate Millers version of Cabwoman's origin, it doesn't make much sense for a world class cat burglar, Jewel and Art thief able to more or less match Batman.
Ya know something, I personally didn't really like her portrayal in the show. Why? Well let me list the reasons.
1.) Having her appear in very few episodes.
2.) Her willingly surrending to Batman, and ALLOWING HERSELF TO BE ARRESTED (the most out of character moment I've ever seen).
3.) Having her try to seduce Nightwing, even though he is young enough to be her son.
4.) Changing her appearence completeyl. While her personality was damn near identical to her comic counterpart, her design in the fourth season was horrendus.
5.) And then after Batman TAS is over, she's never once seen again, nor does she make an appearence in any of the spin offs including the justice league, or Batman Beyond.
2). Didn't she escape after allowing herself to be arrested? Catwoman has always given something up in order to gain something, I'm pretty sure that's basic thieving 101.
3) She seduced Nightwing in the comics to try and make Batman jealous. Also, there's no canon ages for the characters. And her seduction fell flat since Nightwing ended up betryaing her in the end. I'm not saying it's right or that it's not weird but it's happened before.
She's kinda lucky to not show up in Beyond. Look how Bane and Talia ended up. Bruce Timm wanted to turn her into a weird Batman-clone obsessed spinster/Old Maid.
Well she is sorta an animal rights activist it's kinda expected for her to be a hypocrite just look at PETA.
Tbh I prefer the animal rights stuff and I don’t even see that scene as her giving up the “facade”...
The animal is ALREADY extinct... what she threw in the fire was merely a museum piece and in her mind likely just a random piece of junk humans keep around to gawk at with pride for having bested...

Honestly it’s more likely a symbol for everything she hates rather then being anything truly meaningful to her beyond obviously wealth.
