    Seems awfully silly to do cold-weather testing in Florida

    • @TommyboyGTP
      @TommyboyGTP 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      bwilliamstown Northern parts of Florida have dipped into the teens and even single digits before. Granted, that's not -1,000 below zero like in northern parts of the globe, but it's still pretty chilly for an environment that's sub-tropical several months out of the year. It doesn't have to be super cold for things to stop working, or not work properly.

    If you plan on extended idle times. A high idle about 1,000 rpm is needed. It will put the engine at the lowest engine load, leanest fuel mixture. Which helps the DPF to keep cleaner.
    I have done these test on a 2010 Mack Vision. The dash has a digital screen that allows me to monitor ever aspect of the drivetrain.

      Axel Vanegas real trucks don’t have spark plugs tho lol.
      Gasoline engines use spark to ignite. That’s easy no matter what temp. Diesel is compression ignition. So basically you need compression and heat to ignite it and that’s hard to do on a cold start.

    -20 is nice, but here where its -40 and sometimes as low as -50, you have to plug it in.
    Things may start, but the amount of engine wear while its cold that can be saved by plugging it in, pays off in the long haul.

    In northern PA it gets down to -15 F (and colder) if your truck was not running through the night you will have gelled fuel and frozen DEF fluid this is fact because we had tons of 6.7L towed in to the Ford dealership to get everything unthawed.

  • @Xmvw2X
    @Xmvw2X 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    As a Minnesotan who sees -40°F a couple times during the winter, I appreciate the testing they do.
    At the end of the day though, the big factors that help a car run in the very cold is pretty simple.
    1) Use a good battery with outstanding CCA and good RC. Buy the best of the best, and you won't be left stranded or left with a failed battery. AMG batteries are among the best with a couple options leading the CCA and RC stats.
    EnerSys makes the best batteries and are branded under top products like the Sears Diehard Platinum or Odyssey Extreme. These represent the best of the best in CCA and RC available on the market. You pay a premium, but you also have a car that cranks fast and starts in the dead of winter. You also tend to get a LOT of years out of them without fail versus the cheapy choices like the well valued and well performing EverStart Maxx batteries at Walmart.
    2) Use fully synthetic lubricants with the lowest rated Pour Point you can find. This means you run 0w30 or 0w20 fully synthetic engine oils. There are zero weight options up to 0w50 available for outstanding cold weather start even in a high performance or old, worn car that requires high viscosity at operating temps (ex. BMW M cars). You also use fully synthetic transmission fluid and gear oil in the diffs. This helps tremendously with shifting and helps the car feel more normal in the dead cold rather than feeling like you're shifting and putting power through peanut butter. The key value you're looking for is Pour Point, and you can view this under the specification documentation for the oil. Every brand/model of engine oil and gear oil has them. Some manufacturers list a lower temperature viscosity than the two standards to rate cold and hot. However, not every manufacturer does. Since the cold and hot viscosities are speced, i.e. the 0 and 30 in the numbers, those numbers all exist within the same narrow range, so there's nothing to compare there unless they list a colder temp value also. A few do.
    Some of the best Pour Points available on the market are full synthetics from Mobil, Amsoil, and Motul. For a 0w20, Mobil 1 full synthetic is the best. For 0w30, it's Amsoil 0w30 SSO. For gear oil, Motul Gear 300 has the lowest Pour Point, and Amsoil's full synthetic 75w90 is a nearby runner up. Amsoil has their Severe Gear full synthetic for heavier duty use with a great low temperature Pour Point.
    The short of it all:
    A great battery and fully synthetic oils do wonders to make a car highly functional in extreme cold.

    • @TheArfdog
      @TheArfdog 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Xmvw2X Nope, these are tested with standard motorcraft 5W-20 or -30 (sometimes synthetic). No need for fancy oils.

    • @Xmvw2X
      @Xmvw2X 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheArfdog It's not a matter of need. Rather, it's a better experience from dead cold. It turns over easier. It runs with less losses. In the case of manual transmissions, it doesn't feel like you're shifting through peanut butter. The car just feels much more normal, much more like warm weather starting and operation.
      Now all this doesn't matter much after 10 minutes when everything's warmed up, but it's nice to have a better initial experience and operation.

    Last winter we stayed at a hotel in Northern Alberta but couldn't plug in because of the amount of vehicles and had to park across the street. Temperature dipped to -40 overnight. The next morning we went to leave. My 2012 Ram 1500 was fine. My counterparts 2015 F-150 Eco boost would start, but then shutoff after 5 seconds, repeatedly. Apparently if it fails to see oil pressure within 5 seconds it'll turn off. So I plugged his block heater into my inverter and we sat in the truck for two hours before his would keep running.

    What matters more is how durable will this truck be in these extreme conditions. Any car will work a couple of times in freezing temps like this. What I would like to see is the truck going through multiple cycles so we get a feel of how the plastics will hold up over time and age.
    I had a Silverado that would break retainer pins inside of the door when it was too cold out, making the door handles useless.

    I’m from northern Wisconsin, some of these people seem to think this isn’t cold. -22 is damn cold. That’s relatively rare even here. It doesn’t get that cold the majority of places. -40 is extreme I don’t care who you are. Go outside for 20 minutes. Good luck

    So basically the vehicles are good at -20F but at the most extreme temperatures, the vehicles have to constantly run. I think it would make sense to design some sort of heated jacket that can be placed around the engine, transmission pan, and battery to keep those components at around -20F in those extreme -50F+ conditions instead of keeping the vehicles running 24/7. Long periods of idling are usually hard on an engine, but then again its better to have increased engine wear instead of it not starting back up again.

    • @TheArfdog
      @TheArfdog 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bobby0345 Nope, they are just testing for when people want to run them 24/7. The vehicles are built to start and stop and start again. They don't have to constantly idle. There's already such a heated jacked... it's heated by burning fuel. DUh

    • @JSVD
      @JSVD 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bobby0345 If you've ever experienced -50F, or even -20F you would know that keeping ANYTHING running or warm is a challenge. There's a good chance that it wouldn't start again at -50F if left overnight. ..Maybe cycle the glow plugs a few times... MAYBE then.

    • @TheArfdog
      @TheArfdog 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jon VD Automakers like Ford test down to those temps... and start just fine.

      I know - Newer ones will. We do commercial snow removal and a lot of our equipment isn't "new". Most of it is 5-15 years old. THOSE, if it ever got to -50F here, those would be fancy decorations in the snow.

    It’s funny, Ford is stated to be tested to -40°F, but here in western PA my 2017 F150 door won’t even unlock or stay latched (after I finally manage to get it open) once temperatures hit 25°F. And that’s +25°F, so 65° greater than what it was supposedly tested at. Seems like there’s a bit of false advertisement here
