@Mid Coast Adventures, yeah he wasn’t to keen on going down on his own and then saw me coming up. So he jumped to the chance to follow someone down and I was more than happy to help. He did it well in the end.
Mate Im just in the process of watching your clips. Bloody fantastic effort. Just 1 wee tip.....Please stop freewheeling.. (turning your engine off) This is why your front brakes are fading badly...because you are relying 100% on your breaks alone and we always bias more to the front brakes. The fluid will boil and result in zero brakes. Leaving your engine running...Idling down using minimal breaks evens out breaks AND Engine breaking (compression) to slow you down. If your bike gets away on you while freewheeling chances are that you wont get it in control again and end up binning it. I hope that helps mate. Keep up the adventures 😁
Replace your stock air fuel mixture screw with a R&D flex jet you may have to file the hole in the fuel bowl abit untill you can fit the flex jet through it to tune for the altitude differences on the go basically just turn your idle down and ajust the flex jet/ fuel air mixture screw left and right until you achieve peak RPMs inbetween the stutters each direction then readjust the idle screw to desired idle rpms it's fairly simple and straight forward
Mate your trips are bloody legendary !! Full commitment !! Video content & down to earth Aussie commentary even about the roos & number 2's 🤣🤣👌.. I got my DRZ new a year ago, now have 2 other mates with same bikes 😃. I've done a few camp trips now & also go solo at times. We're often in the Vic High Country..... Very similar riding to you, mostly the harder off-road stuff..... we're hovering around the 50yr old mark so a bit older but damn fun watching your adventures. Top of the class in your apprenticeship I reckon 🤣🤣👍👍 Cheers for the great vids
@OFF-ROAD DOWNNUNDER, awesome stuff. The DRZ is a great workhorse to have. I’d love to muck around out there unloaded. I’d be happy to try any track if that was the case. Thanks for the compliments. Hopefully I’m still kicking and riding at 50. 👍
@Alexander Wagner, thanks mate, I can assure you I don’t plan to be caught out it the full on stuff, however once out there and presented with the challenge, it certainly doesn’t deter me. Lol maybe all my adv rides are destined to just be hard. 👍

Concurring tough things in our lives are what living is about and not just surviving day to day, that said there are certainly times when its best to bail, as always a good watch , I must have subscribed not long after this was 1st posted so just working back thru your old vids and yeah thx to you I bought a DRZ
Nice one Lance ( and Sally ), Really enjoyed the footage. It's really refreshing to see a regular guy on a sub litre adventure bike not pretending to have a good time but actually having a great time. An adventure bike is a bike you have an adventure on! 👍🏁
@Elvis Parsley, yeah Sally has done me proud over and over again. 100% not every minute of the adventure is fun yet fun is still had. Very weird concept to explain to the typical person who never gets out and about. 👍
Mint. The Aussie bush is something special, it really gets highlighted with the dense canopy of our natives in this vid. Back in 81, my old man was on a search and rescue flight in a helicopter searching the Barrington Tops for a lost small plane that left QLD, i don't believe the plane or any of the passengers have ever been found. Thnx for sharing Lance, your a solo legend
Lance your not an apprentice anymore, that's tough country my backyard I don't travel on bike by myself anymore there, your hardcore the creek crossing s were giving me anxiety, well done great adventure
@Martin Buhler, haha mate I’ll always be an apprentice, well until someone pays me to ride lol. What a dream that would be. Trust me, it was giving me more than anxiety being in it. Learnt a lot that day. 👍
Lance, I recently discovered your channel and vids, love your commentary as you go. It's funny with water crossing and steep hills etc how we challenge ourselves, sometimes, unintentionally. A mate and I found oiurselves battling for 3 hours to get 30 km in steep, muddy hilly terrain in tropical Qld rainfall, that was an adventure!
Great video Lance. Geez that water crossing was a bit sketchy. Some of the hill climbs looked very tough. But the scenery, what can I say bloody magnificent. I love your commentary throughout the video. I'd love to get over that way one day to see for myself. Thanks for sharing mate. All the best.
@David Clark and to think the GoPro always down plays the hard stuff. That river crossing just plain old sucked and I should have just avoided it. So close to loosing my bike a couple of times that day. Mate it’s a great place to ride in the right weather.
@@The_Apprentice_Adventurer Awesome video mate. Familiar with a lot of those tracks .. Big Props for you doing it Solo.. Being alone adds a very "Real" aspect

That river crossing was more than a little sketchy as a single rider. You got a family to get back to, son. Just cause you made it doesn't mean it wasn't dumb 😉
@Hazcat, I know, definitely looking back it was the worst call I’ve made on a bike for sure. I’ve gotta learn to not get so fixated on my tracks I want to achieve, it will be my demise one day otherwise.
Well done that’s what you call adventure 👍unplanned route are sometimes the best you will never forge. You don’t call yourself the apprentice adventure for nothing well done Lance 👍👍
Lance, Another set of great videos! Really entertaining, a good laugh and plenty of knowledge shared. You've a great way of taking the viewer with you on the trip and for my part I lived the emotion of it. Thanks and look forward to the next adventure. Cheers
Great videos mate . I've just bought an old DRz250 myself , learning to ride dirt at 59 , after a lifetime of road bikes 🤪 inspirational stuff mate . Well done .
Lance you are a legend thanks for uploading your adventures I really enjoyed watching them although the river crossings well rather you than me mate. Ride safe looking forward to the next adventure.
@The_Apprentice_Adventurer tomorrow he is coming on the back of the tiger 800 for a 5 day tour of the Welsh mountains. We are both as excited as each other. Can't wait for the day when he is old enough to have his own bike then we can keep having adventures.
Well done young fella.....always look forward to the candor in your commentary. Maybe next year I'll follow your adventurous spirt . Keep going mat, well done
Fantastic video Lance, great scenery and beautiful country. Also an insight into the decision making process and the judgement of risk. I can tell you I would have turned around, where you pushed through. Great adventure ride, you've made me think of a visit to the Brindabellas very soon. Can't wait to see your next adventure.
@Geoff Turner, yeah I think I got lucky out there, definitely risky business being in those rivers. I’m glad I didn’t push on to the unknown side. Mate the Brindabellas was a pleasant surprise. Much busier but still a good local place to ride.
I was just rewatching part 1 last night. So good to see some Australia on 2 wheels - esp when there's no BS, just riding and having a good time. Cheers mate!
Great riding. I assume you have redone your breather hoses. I have done stuff in water that deep and it’s stalled on me 10 seconds in. Maybe a video on how to do that with the breather hoses would be great.
Great Dual Sport content! Take a light weight bike, bolt on a 20L tank, a comfortable seat, a windscreen and get to the exploring. The most fun type of riding.
@@The_Apprentice_Adventurer It's always amazed me that no manufacturer has ever stepped up and built a good lightweight bike that comes with a good seat and a big tank. They could call it their "Explorer" model. Until that day comes we'll just have to keep building our own!
Watched the video to the end and it has been a real reminisce for me have been down the crooked river, part way up Basalt south track, camped at the same place as you on the blue rag range track, camped on the Gibbo river all in a toyota hiace. And the missus and i have just camped at O'Hare camp on the Tumut river. Why i what and enjoyed your videos is that i have ordered a Honda 300 Rally coming in June 22. Cheers
@Maurice Ralph, haha is sounds like I copied your trip. Great place to ride or drive. The Honda 300 is a great bike I reckon. My dad use to have the 250 equivalent and loved it.
Another great video. It's like I went on a mini adventure with you but without any physical pain. I wonder if you had a way to make a fire at the top of the mountain when it was cold. That would have been pretty cool.
Thanks mate. No real reason. Probably just a bad habit I guess from being in too many situations where the bike was struggling to start. Like stuck on a hill or cold temperatures and leaving it running was the safest thing at the time.
@qBMOp, mate me neither. Looking back It was just so silly to attempt the first one when it wasn’t necessary. I can assure you doing it for real and solo was one of the scariest and most fatiguing things I have down on a bike. I survived so all good I guess👍
@@The_Apprentice_Adventurer I am glad you made it . It seems like adventure can take you to the edge of giving up or death and it can take you to the mose beautiful places. Or maybe sometimes the most beautiful places are on the paths that are hardest to travel. I don't know lol . Adventure life is the best life for me
Nice one mate. Don’t worry, when I first started I struggled on a flat firetrail. Just starts small and aim to do a little better each ride. Your on the right bike for the job. 👍
My man! This two part serious looks beyond awesome! 2300km over 5 days. Looks like a surreal trip! Any chance you would share the locations you visited or the route you took? I'd like to attempt myself. You killed it brah, keep it coming
@Harry Farrell, thanks mate. It certainly was a trip I won’t forget. I don’t keep any GPX files and kinda just go off hand written notes. At the end of the second video I put some google maps up of the tracks I used and where I camped for each day. Have a look. If that’s no good DM in Instagram (link on my channel) and I’ll try to give you more info.
Fantastic, first half of video had me stressing with those river crossings I’ve driven that crooked river track in a car and has been over my bonnet i wouldn’t even consider doing it on a bike! Keen to see your next trip
@@The_Apprentice_Adventurer I'm on an Enfield Meteor 350 (!). I'm looking for a bike that is going to be a bit more dirt-worthy but still road biased. I'm a brand new rider at 60+ years old. I did the road down from Delegate to Orbost which I think is called the Bonang Rd. Also did the Snowball Rd south from Braidwood and from Tumut through to Wee Jasper all on Ceat street tyres. The ride over Hotham was 2 degrees and foggy and only slightly warmer when I went back over Falls Creek to Omeo, I wish I had your weather. The ride from Khancoban over to Selwyn is pretty epic, and the Elliott Way is also pretty choice. I am not, under any circumstances, going to follow you.
@@lowend5566 well all I can say is awesome work being over 60 and still giving it a shot. In my opinion It’s not about how hard a trail is, more just Pushing your own comfort zone which may be an easy trail for some or super hard for others. Haha I’ll get you into the thick of it for sure.

Loved it mate, your videos keep getting better and better, and they were bloody good to start with! Now I'm going to have to go on a mini adventure ride this weekend to scratch the itch 🤣
@All Aussie Traveller, thanks man, yeah even I can notice my filming and videos are improving which is nice to see considering I’m learning as I go and winging it. Mate I also have the itch to ride. It’s good and bad at the same time. 👍
@@The_Apprentice_Adventurer it's a relatively inexpensive Bolt-on Caliper Bracket and of course the rotor you can always go back to stock with little effort.
What a great watch Lance, I absolutely love the realness with your commentary, you seem to just say what’s going through your head at the time and I can connect with that 😂 Those were some absolutely awesome tracks, I’ve seen some of them on TH-cam before but am so keen to do some Victorian high country myself 👍 Always love your adventures, I gather the kangas went and read all about it after your morning poo 😂 (great story 🤣) what’s next? Can’t wait 🤙
@Kayzee Moto, half the time I have no idea what I have said until I get home and start editing. So much doesn’t make the video because nothing Make sense, half words, half sentences, the stress and excitement sometimes makes me mix my words up. Lol Yeah I’d love to do another trip out there in the future. So much more to explore. It will be a while before my next BIG trip, maybe flinders and west NSW, the Cape or even just Sydney to Queensland border via the bush.
Mate your vids are brilliant...capture the moments and luv your honesty.Just wish go pro could capture how steep those climbs are.Great work and thanks for sharing.
@Mike Malone, yeah I have read a lot about it since my trip. I think for Australia and the rare occasions I’ll be up that high in this country I’ll get away with just leaving it. Thanks for the info though. 👍
Brilliant stuff Lance! I'd love to get up there on the DR, those tracks are fantastic and the views are bloody incredible!! Well ridden mate, and good job on the river crossings. I think I was helping you hold the bike up, I caught myself leaning into it as I was watching...
@Dave Walton, thanks champ. To funny you said that. When I was reviewing the footage I to was leaning and squeezing the arm chair and I bloody knew what the outcome was already. Very very full on moment in my adventure riding life that’s for sure.
another great vid,!!! can you elaborate on your experiences with storing extra fuel on the bike, what have you used ? where did you mount it ? how did badly if at all did it affect your riding experiebce? was it easy to operate without spilling fuel, did it leak?
@Dan gur, mate for this ride fuel wasn’t an easy because I had plenty of stops to fuel up. However on the desert rides it’s always a pain to try and carry enough fuel for the target distances and extra for safety reasons and or detours. It’s probably the most nerve racking bit about riding and hoping you have enough. I just carry spare fuel cans and strap them down. The more I carry the less room I have to sit and the harsher it is on the back. Bike handling goes out the window to. Ideally you have fuel stops and a big enough main tank.
@@The_Apprentice_Adventurer i am kicking myself for not getting the 300 rally..... I got the 300l thinking that i would just upgrade the tank nut nobody came out with a big tank for it . the ims tank is just 1.5 litres bigger than stock. that is so far the only one on the market.
Hi Lance, the DRZ is a 400? What type of tyres are you using, Mid-Hard? Interested because of the highway/dirt performance. Just gotten to the poo story , too much information 😀. You been riding long. Good stuff. Hope you get more weekends free 👍.
Hi John, i just run Dunlop 606's every major ride. I normally go for the 130 wide rear to handle the extra weight of the bike. They haven't let me down thus far. I normally get around 6000km to the rear as well with some tread left over. I've been riding bikes for the last 17 years but the dirt stuff the last 10 years.
Great videos Lance, well done, you’re a great communicator. I also have a Drz400 and am heading to the Alpine region in May, is there any mods or tuning I should do to the carby to handle the altitude and lower oxygen ? Cheers
@Paul Goldie, mate I seriously wouldn’t worry about it. Mine played up a little bit, but it was so short lived as the mountains descend as quick as they ascend. The bike will run fine overall and may just be a bit sluggish on the highest spot. But it’s not high enough to cause alarm. If you rejet the carby for heights then you have the same problem when going to normal altitudes. I think for Australia we can get by just fine in the carby bikes. Good luck on your trip.
This track and photos I seen of 4×4 drivers is what made me want to do adventure riding hey , to camp on top of blue ridge. Now I want to ride all over Australia, everywhere lol 😅😂
Hi Lance, I found myself in a similar situation up in the new England high country on my DRZ not so long ago crossing high flowing rivers that made me very nervous as im also a solo rider. What modifications have you made for the overflow hoses that are down near the swing arm to cross these rivers? Had you raised these hose's up to the airbox? Really enjoy your channel mate.

@@The_Apprentice_Adventurer It's always amazed me that no manufacturer has ever stepped up and built a good lightweight bike that comes with a good seat and a big tank. They could call it their "Explorer" model. Until that day comes we'll just have to keep building our own!
This one was absorbing man, I was there with you the whole way bro. Love your content and your no BS style!👍🌲
@Grand River, thanks mate, it’s awesome to read such comments 👍
I don't know how you made those river crossings but I'm glad you did ! Great adventure , thank you for sharing your videos
Adventure life is the best life for me
Great stuff! Getting a drz soon, going have to get my skills up in the local forest before i tackle anything like this.
I've just done some of that area and it was nice to see you doing the hard stuff I wasn't able to do. You're a legend Lance.
Thanks mate, how come you couldn’t do it? On the bigger bikes?
Another great vid. Love the crossing - and the trip notes. 👍🏼👍🏼
man oh man farrrrrr out man .. so good to see ..mate you hit a tree !!!!! .your a pelican crazy son of a B .... what a legend mate and your doing what i want to do.... all the way fucken eh.... lucky your riding a DRZ !!!!! !!!! oh mate so good to watch ya bro ....
Sweet vid, Loving the mini series!
Sweet video Dude, love your work. That river crossing was insane! Keep up the wicked videos 🤠
Great vids, loved escaping on the adventure with you. Keep em coming!
Man that river crossing looked sketchy. Inspiring stuff!
All these tracks are at my back-door step, can't wait to get my first bike! Going to go for a drz400
@Fun Simulator, tell me about it. I was shitting bricks the whole time.
Awesome part of the country for riding. You’ll be set for years with trails out there.
Well done Lance 👏🏼 you smashed it. Really enjoyable adventure in your beautiful country.
Great vid mate thanks
dont have a bike, i hike, kayak and fly, but heck i love your content, cheers Debs
@Deb Oxy, well if your ever looking to add to your hobbies, ADV riding could just be one of them 😉
Loved it mate, your videos keep getting better and better, and they were bloody good to start with!
You're a Beast! Bravo! think about a larger Front Brake Roter it may help with Brake Fade👍
Yeah the old DRZ could do with a few modern upgrades that’s for sure. I love keeping her stock standard though. I’m torn lol.
@@The_Apprentice_Adventurer it's a relatively inexpensive Bolt-on Caliper Bracket and of course the rotor you can always go back to stock with little effort.
I know it's an older Vid mate, you did awesome.
What a great watch Lance, I absolutely love the realness with your commentary, you seem to just say what’s going through your head at the time and I can connect with that 😂
Those were some absolutely awesome tracks, I’ve seen some of them on TH-cam before but am so keen to do some Victorian high country myself 👍
Always love your adventures, I gather the kangas went and read all about it after your morning poo 😂 (great story 🤣) what’s next? Can’t wait 🤙
@Kayzee Moto, half the time I have no idea what I have said until I get home and start editing. So much doesn’t make the video because nothing Make sense, half words, half sentences, the stress and excitement sometimes makes me mix my words up. Lol
Yeah I’d love to do another trip out there in the future. So much more to explore.
It will be a while before my next BIG trip, maybe flinders and west NSW, the Cape or even just Sydney to Queensland border via the bush.
@@The_Apprentice_Adventurer that's half the fun, I always look forward to editing my vids just so I can laugh at myself 😂
“Lance dumbest decision on the trip, but I pulled it off! So it’s not the dumbest decision” 😂
Haha totally makes sense right?
Goodday well dun and yrs carbs suffer st altitude need injection but a quick jetting can help stay safe
Mate your vids are brilliant...capture the moments and luv your honesty.Just wish go pro could capture how steep those climbs are.Great work and thanks for sharing.
Great video buddy ride safe
Great video mate. And with the Carb, normally you go down one jet size for every 500m in elevation.
@Mike Malone, yeah I have read a lot about it since my trip. I think for Australia and the rare occasions I’ll be up that high in this country I’ll get away with just leaving it. Thanks for the info though. 👍
Awesome trip man. Any other big rides planned?
@Shippo, thanks mate. Probably not until next year now. In terms of a big one anyway.
@@bondibeast ah that’s no good. Mate just strap a jerry can to the back. That will sort it out.
Good luck on your trip.
back through thr river.
This track and photos I seen of 4×4 drivers is what made me want to do adventure riding hey , to camp on top of blue ridge. Now I want to ride all over Australia, everywhere lol 😅😂
Hi Lance,
I found myself in a similar situation up in the new England high country on my DRZ not so long ago crossing high flowing rivers that made me very nervous as im also a solo rider.
What modifications have you made for the overflow hoses that are down near the swing arm to cross these rivers?
Had you raised these hose's up to the airbox?
Really enjoy your channel mate.
Thanks for tuning in mate. 100%, both of my hoses run under my seat. If not my bike use to stall in 20cm of water every single time.
Hey mate 👍🍻 I've applied for a job in NSW if I get job and move there from England I'll ride round with ya 👍🍻
mate love the videos, always love seeing another apprentice adventurer DRZ400 vid popping up. What do ya do for a living if you dont mind me asking? im a chippy myself
@Taylor Bewsey, I’m a youth worker and mentor the more disadvantaged youth out there. Before that I’ve had many jobs, bit of a ‘Jack of all trades’ so to speak. 👍
@@The_Apprentice_Adventurer absolute legend my friend ! Wish you all the best keep plugging away mate the TH-cam will blow up!!!
Lance, fantastic watch!! Learnings for me too! Thanks for sharing your Motorcycle Adventure. I'm curious what tyres are you using? This Old fart loves his DRZ400E too, amazing Motorcycle for Adventures. 👍😁
@Bob Drakeford, thanks for tuning in. Mate I just run the classic D606’s, but the rear I use 130/90. I can’t fault those tyres and use them for every big ride I go on.
