Bespoke Walnut Indian Clubs - Woodturning

  • A friend and fellow Brazilian Jiu Jitsu player recently injured his shoulder training and asked if I could build him a set of Indian Clubs. These bowling pin shaped wooden clubs vary in size and weight and are used for developing strength and mobility. They were exceptionally popular during the health craze of the late Victorian era, used by military cadets and well-heeled ladies alike, and even appeared as a gymnastic event in the 1904 and 1932 Olympics.
    I used my X-Carve to carve my friends initials (J.A.) into brass blanks that I purchased online.
    These clubs ended up weighing in at 4.0 lbs and 4 lbs 3 oz. Not to bad for my first true turning project.

    I've recently decided to monetize my channel in the hopes to help offset some of the costs of materials and tooling. Sorry for the delay in posting videos.
    Please let us know what you think about the build, the video and what you might like to see next. A like, comment or hitting that subscribe button would be fantastic. Thank you!

    I have 4 sets of clubs. The one I use most is a tear drop shaped 1 pound set made in the late 19th century. I have a set of 2 pound Maple and 3 pound Oak (also teardrop). You did a nice job on these.

    is the handle strong enough? since most of the bulk is wiped out. small weight is ok. but bigger ones better made from.solid block. but your making and finish is superb. do let us know where to check out and shop.

    • @TheMikeRybak

      Oh yeah the hand is very strong. I don't have a measurement but its at least 1.5 inches in diameter and the handle material runs into the weighted portion.

      Zeus, I made these for a friend from scraps so it's hard to say. If I was a good business man I'd say $1500.00+. I'm not an artist of note but the walnut and time do add up. For pricing I generally do a bit of market research as a baseline then factor in my skill level and quality I will finish the product to. Hopefully that helps! I appreciate the kind words and comment.

    • @TheMikeRybak
      @TheMikeRybak  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In terms of raw materials, the walnut was $200-300 roughly. I'd probably sell them for $500-600 if I was to make them again. I've never really thought to much about price points lol. If a different species of wood was used the price could be brought down a bit. Walnut is just cray expensive.
      Glad you enjoyed the video and the idea.
