BREAK IN! Vanlife Nightmare (van attacked with us INSIDE)

- Not again!! Thieves try to break in to our van, whilst we are inside. Usually this would spook a criminal, but these guys did not care and would not stop. Before this happened we were enjoying a wonderful time in Greece. We spent some time in Meteora enjoying Greek history, wondrous nature and some bitter cold weather. Greece has been fantastic so far, and I know this unfortunate event is not a reflection of this country or it's people.
In future we will be more vigilant and not arrive at park ups in the dark so we can make our own analysis of how dodgy a place feels.

We are Philly and Keely and we live full time in our tiny home on wheels Martha. After building our DIY home in a Citroen Relay camper we spent a year living on the streets of London before quitting our jobs only to be met with lockdown. Then we took our van further than she had ever been before to the very beautiful Turkey. Enroute we stopped off in Spain for a few weeks where we experienced every van lifers worst nightmare, we were robbed and they stole all valuables in our van. But now we are back on our feet, fully MOT’d and back on the road through Europe before we experienced another vanlife nightmare... our van caught fire! After the trauma of that we had a massive change of plan and have now made our way to Japan. We are starting a Japanese road trip and excited to bring you all along.

Fit sensor cameras for the outside of the van, sensor/manual spot lights, a loud alarm/series of alarms that you can set off, bear spray, baseball bat.
Yeah we were thinking big blinding lights and big deafening alarm. Definitely being added when we get back 💪💪

Absolutely, regarding access to the cab. From my sailing days, I also make sure everything is put away and secure before going to bed. Stay safe! Four men tried to carjack me on the highway between Syracusa and Catania two weeks ago. Scary as hell!

First year we lived in London in the van it was practically a weekly occurrence, but this was the first time we've ever had someone that didn't run away once they realised we were inside. Amazing scenery! I have been to Greece but in the Spring. It was hot in May. I am so sorry that someone felt they had to try to steal from you. You handled it well. Thanks so much 🥰🥰🥰 someone in the comments gave us great advice to buy wasp nest spray. Apparently it shoots like 20ft and will incapacitate them immediately if sprayed in their face. A big air horn to deafen them and a light to blind them 💪💪 I'm sure you wont encounter it, I think we are just super unlucky when it comes to stuff like this. Scary! Stay safe, you did the right thing. We took our van to Meteora last summer and love it too! No wild camping allowed in the area then, so that’s one advantage of going off season!
Yeah it was pretty quiet when we were there only two other vans in the whole area so noone seemed to mind ❤️
My favourite parts of Greece and Turkey was learning all of the history of where we were. Coming from a relatively new country, New Zealand, it's quite hard to comprehend.

They weren’t locals, my cousin has lived in Greece for a long time & says that it foreigners of Greece from all different countries that do this & that you need to report it to the local police!

Give yourselves a couple of days to digest, but try to move on and kudos to you both how you didn't act native or panicky at that moment. Let's face it, like you said: they didn't seem to have anything to lose. I got back from work once and my patio door had been shattered and they stole a lot. It took me a few days to feel safe in my house that had been “violated”. I can’t imagine how I woul’ve felt if I was inside when it happened.
I hope you guys will find a way to recover from this. You are strong together as a team ❤. I really hope you will feel better and safer everyday.

So glad you guys escaped something that could have been really horrible - you did the right thing, made lots of noise an drove off! Your experience has brought forward my plans to install large flood lights on all four sides of the van that can be turned on when in bed which will hopefully deter would be break ins. Greek history is just incredible to think the monks built these mind blowing monasteries what a death defying feat of will power, strength & tenacity!! Oh guys what a horrible experience, that could of been a lot worse. Getting out of there quick was definitely the right decision, most people would have done the same, including us. You never know how many of them where out there.

Overnight in Van with no dog, you need several dogs barking together on autoplay recording or one big snarly Lion roar cat. Then have international sticker placed on van, "Beware of dogs". Outside Spot lights help yes, but something loud to scare attackers away. I Feel for you both,, being alone in a strange land. I won't spend time (my travel history)as a tourist hitchhiking through Greece, and no support from the local authorities. Keep yourselves safe.

I'm so so SO saddened by the attempted break-in! what the F!??!! Just really horrible! You are right - there are SO many wonderful people all over the world.. and then the freakin' bleep bleeps!!! So glad you kept your wits about you and did not open the door... really good lesson! it would be a mistake I could see me and my hubs doing.. just open the door to see who was there. I’m so sorry to hear about the break in. Can I suggest you get someone to do an energy clearing on your van. It would make good viewing content at the extremes you would go to to get over this but it will also work.
