I think of Rob as a vocal chameleon. He is able to change his timbre and placement to match the piece he is singing. We have country Rob, R&B Rob, rap Rob, opera Rob, classic rock Rob, etc. He truly has a gift as far as that goes.

He definitely is a vocal chameleon. Rob is the group's tonal center in live performances. He does most of the lead ins after key changes or brings them back to their previous key after break downs. Glad you liked it.

It is no mistake that he was chosen to be the second singer in Helplessly Hoping, since the arrangement required him to totally match Chance's timber, pronunciation, pitch etc. It takes immense skill to do that.

When we first heard Rob and Austin sing this we all were shocked.

Thank you for doing this reaction. In an interview, Austin said that their producer,Darren, said Rob hit exactly the same notes as Pavarotti in some areas. He showed an overlay of Rob on Pavarotti's and it was identical. Rob's major was opera, but he fell in with a capella and followed that route. In an interview with Patrol Gaming channel, Austin said he'd really wanted to show off "opera Rob". However, Rob said he wouldn't unless Austin sang it with him. Austin went on to say he thought he'd been okay but that Rob was fantastic. One of the things I love about HF is how they support each other. Although they're both classically trained, Rob's focused extensively on opera; Austin's degree is in Music Theater. Insofar as their accents, Rob is from Minnesota, Austin is from south Georgia.

I think that's an important element of music, or rather, art in general. You don't need messages, lyrics, or an agenda to create a profound moment that can touch people. Just listening to one person give their all in a performance (or put their all into a piece of art) can be enough to move us in unexpected ways. Experiencing the art humanity is capable of producing has left me transfixed in some moments. For me, it's challenging coming up with something that makes me happier than watching someone strive to reach their highest potential and extricate those developed abilities for themselves and others to appreciate =)

    • @stpetie7686

@@goodeveningstories Undoubtably. Every time I've walked into a "Van Gough room" in a gallery, I've had the same eye-moistening experience. I can't swear as to what exactly VG was feeling while he was painting a particular piece, but it still has that effect. The best art is just an indirect and somewhat inexact form of communication. Real life hasn't made me cry since 1992, but good art, particularly music, does on a simi-regular basis.

I think the contrast in my feelings about these two singers owes a lot to the element of surprise. Nobody expected either of them to sing in this genre, but when we heard Austin, there was no real surprise. It was gorgeous, and we all know that Austin has a beautiful voice, incredible control, and the emotion and drama that we've seen in many other performances. Rob, however . . . did anybody suspect he could do that? Great voice, great singer, yeah, yeah, we knew that. But on this one song, this one performance, Rob is an OPERA singer. And we're amazed. He never showed us that before.

They did a beautiful job. Didn’t expect that from them. Another one you would enjoy reacting to is Dan Vasc a heavy metal singer also with opera training.

I've enjoyed listening to Rob and Austin when they first dropped the video. I'm really looking forward to your analysis. I was 16 when I visited my sister in Germany. Her friend took the bus with me to see some of Austria, Switzerland and mostly Italy. We went to the Roman Bath ruins and they performed Aida. It was amazing, room on the stage for 2 horse-drawn chariots. When these guys did this one, I had to listen well. I do recommend VoicePlay's ACA Top 10 Movie Themes because Rob is a guest vocalist in this one. Also do VoicePlay's Phantom of the Opera (I know - movie and not opera but a bit which is lovely. You are a delight with your total enjoyment of Nessun Dorma.

I think anyone hearing this, those who just write off HF as country/funny singers, you know those people would be gobsmacked.
While they are not stellar tenors, on the level of the three tenors, I really do prefer this version.

The capability of excellence by each of the individuals in this group is off the charts awesome that allows them the flexibility to do so many types of vocalizations and to do it exceptionally well. I have not found a genre they are afraid to tackle whether individually or as a group they are amazing. Then top that off with their arrangements that augment the presentation to be "Home Free" owned.
Many of the band members of Home Free have their own work.
Here are a few you might enjoy: Tim Foust Tim Foust ‐ Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow / Stay [ th-cam.com/video/8bN9bgwR0DI/w-d-xo.html ] Tim sings all of the parts of this presentation
Adam Rupp Beat Boxer [ th-cam.com/users/results?search_query=adam+rupp+drum+solo ] watch the whole video as it has two segments on this presentation.
Austin Brown [ th-cam.com/video/NGP1nEG-OTQ/w-d-xo.html ] Bring Him Home cover by Austin Brown
Adam Chance [ th-cam.com/video/P_2T99BQt04/w-d-xo.html ] Adam Chance wrote this song and is the lead on this song "Skull and Bones" ( sea shanty ) for Home Free another version with the lyrics and video graphics for the video game this song was written for - [ th-cam.com/video/ob9zIqygSSc/w-d-xo.html ] this is epic
Home Free has dominated my following the last 6 years, they have such a great entertainment value. Been fortunate to see them in live concert 3 times in the last 2 1/2 years. Amazing to pull off all they do live. ❣

Chance has some lovely solo work on his own channel. Maybe Leave Her Johnny or even his original Song for Home.

I would like to see Rob's mouth to be slightly more open. At some places the sound is a bit smothered.
I'm not a great Pavarotti fan, finding his versions of things melodramatic. Opera has lyrics! but Big Lucy blasted his way through meanings in his quest for the impressive moment. It's worth remembering that he stopped actually performing in opera many years before his death, so taking him as a template for an opera singer is unwise. It's also been disastrous for this particular aria, as so many people think that the only goal is to sound as much like Pavarotti as possible! His fame also led so many to think that the only opera voice is the heavy Italianate style. As the Italian workhorses of Puccini and Verdi lose popularity and the audiences increasingly look for something more interesting, the Italianate voice is becoming less employable. Rob's voice is lovely but he found it too difficult to keep the voice in the necessary shape and get work.
What some technical reactors have spotted is what Austin's college teachers heard - they wanted him to switch courses, though at that institution there was enormous overlap between opera and music theatre studies - the "spinto" that enables a lyric tenor voice to cut through the extraordinary noise of an orchestra. Austin's spinto is not so much in evidence here but when he sings with others or with instrumentation his voice is always identifiable in the mix.

A tough technique, takes practice to diaphramically talk or sing. I have had to learn to support my voice after a bout of idiopathic vocal cord parakysis with partial recovery. You can tell the difference in siging techniques.
