Dire Straits brilliance is evident in creating a pro veteran, antiwar song. Home Free’s stunning version focuses on the lyrics while Mark Knopfler’s guitar weeps.

Now you know why we LOVE these guys. Whil I like PTX and other a capella groups, for me there is no one who conveys messages and emotion like the Home Free. You will learn on your journey (should you continue it) that there is much more like this to be experienced,

I'm always impressed at the control Tim has over his voice, even when he goes so low. As for the song, Home Free is unapologetically patriotic and has opinions about politics, religion, etc. They have even lost "fans" because of those opinions, but they won't back down from how they feel, especially Tim. I know you would love one of their quarantine videos called Everybody Walking This Land. Please make sure to watch Tim's message at the end.

Home Free treated this presentation with a high degree of respect, it was very sobering and intentionally dwelling on those who have given all. Also, pointing out the desire for PEACE not war as those fighting are put into harm’s way by those who are making the decisions that take the lives others. Their video was well done, simple but very purposeful in the reflection of those who gave all and reflecting on those still serving. Thank You Home Free!!! ❣

Dude, take this from an old great grandmother ..... having feelings makes you one of the best people on the planet. It's those that have NO feelings that scare and worry me! If people had more feelings for others, this world would be such a better place! Thanks for your reaction!!!

As far as I am concerned, this song isn't meant to be joyful about, it's supposed to make you emotional and think about the stupidity of war. Both the lyrics (thank you, Dire Straits) and the amazing harmonies of Home Free did a good job of that. In that regard, your reaction was right on point. It would have felt wrong if you were your usual, enthusiastic self. It doesnt't mean that you (or I or anyone else) can't enjoy the song, but it's not supposed to make you dance.
Home Free is known for honoring soldiers and supporting veterans. They are also quite outspoken about equality. They have other covers that shows their support, like Travelin' Soldier or God Bless The USA. The last one they did with Lee Greenwood (the original artist) and the Singing Seargeants of the United States Air Force.
Everybody Walkin' This Land and Undivided also show their opinion about conflicts and how few differences there are between nations and people in general if you look beyond the surface.
You've also mentioned that they don't specifically target any individual to outshine the others. It's something that I also enjoy about them very much. There are no egos in Home Free. All of them are perfectly fine to either do the lead or be in the background, doing the harmonies (which are equally important as being in the lead, providing the vocal percussions or doing the bass line), but often forgotten. And everybody can and does take the lead, depending on the song. I love their versatility.
Also, you should probably try to call the Adams by their surnames. Soon (July), there will be three Adams in the group and it'll get confusing.

There are no winners in war. I have always been a fan of Dire Straits, but think Home Free did an excellent version of this song. Tim's natural breathy bass was awesome along with Chance's smooth baritone & loved it when all the guys were doing 5 part harmonies. Who would believe humming could sound so good. They gave it a very solemn feeling. I love that they don't overproduce their songs. These guys are my favorite a cappella group out there.

Kudo's to you for being willing to be so vulnerable! War is a nasty brutal business, and the experience of going through combat with your brothers in arms generates the closest bond between men that can exist. More even than marriage. You've saved each others lives over and over again. The tragedy is that the soldiers on the other side are guys just like you for the most part. Almost always there is someone in power who's decided that they want something they're not entitled to and won't back down. Sadly, we have to fight them, and men on both sides have to die for someone else's greed or power trip.
Now, as an antidote to this song, I suggest reacting to Tim Faust's solo version of Why Do Fools Fall in Love! (with puppies!). Tim sings all the parts! There's just nothing not to like!

The fact that your listeners are taking the time to really express heartfelt and insightful thoughts shows me what a profound effect you are having on people who watch your reactions. Thank you for sharing your own emotional journey through this beautiful song and through your life experiences. You express yourself with such beauty and honesty that you seem to have the heart of a poet. This song, as sung by Home Free, is one of the most touching expressions of the tragedy that is war. Your reaction/analysis perfectly summed up the reasons it is so great. Gail L.

One of my favorites of theirs. You spoke so wonderfully and eloquently. You are the only reactor I’ve seen who seemed so pained by this song. I’ve had soldiers in my own family and it is painful to think of the battles. My grandfather survived WWI thankfully. He was gassed by mustard gas in the Ardennes. It affected his voice for the rest of his life. My father, brother and nephew have all served. I’m proud of them all. Loved the humming, the echoes and Tim and Chance’s solos. They looked like ghosts in the windows. 😪

The song speaks to themes that we all can relate to, including the horrors of war, the camaraderie that develops among soldiers, and the deep bonds of brotherhood that form when people share a common experience. Brothers In Arms was released on 14 April 1985 by the British rock band, Dire Straits.

DO YOU HEAR WHAT I HEAR HF is what you need to react to next to recover from Brothers in arms.
HF's arrangement for DYHWIHear is one of my favourites and I paricularly enjoy how the video edit matches the energy of the arrangement and you need to pay attention to who is beatboxing when.
Chris Rupp also sings more 'lead' in it, with Adam front and center in the video for a change.
I usually listen to this song six times in a row so I can follow each singer's journey through the song, because there is just so much going on all the time.
Withe regards to Brothers In Arms...
Wow! What a reaction this arrangement and topic drew out of you!
You know HF is going to put their stamp on the cover they do, but they pack such a punch with their beautiful diction and harmonies. It's such a bonus that each of them is able to feature as lead vocalist as well.
I've basically given up on following other groups, because HF makes me laugh and cry in equal measure
and after listening to HF, other mainstream artists just don't hit with the same intensity anymore.
I am glad you were able to compose yourself after that emotional experience and l'm really glad you posted your reaction for us to appreciate.
Thank you I really enjoyed your take on their performance and arrangement for this classic.

One of the things I love about Tim is how he changes his bass voice depending on the song. Now I know nothing about music, but to me, ( a lot of it) is how much breath he uses. This one is very breathy because he sings as a soldier dying on the battlefield. Misty Mountain's with Peter Hollens has some breath but not as much as this one. Everybody walkin this land is strong in your face bass--very little to no breath. Etc. He is also careful where he uses his runs or pounding deep notes. I think people get so caught up in how low can he go and they miss the other stuff he does.

Isn't it amazing how you can get lost in the parts that are just harmony -- in their complexity and beauty and, as you say, unified strength -- and then comes an incredible solo? And then back to the world of the harmony. Loved your analysis, and your deep emotional reaction.

It's nearly impossible not to be emotionally affected by this. It's so hauntingly beautiful. A master class in 5-part harmony. The original by Dire Straits is totally different. In fact, when I went to listen to it I initially thought I'd clicked on the wrong video. This arrangement was created by the Finnish group Club for Five. Their version is also worth a listen. It has a different feel because it is mixed male and female voices with instrumentation.

If this song almost broke you, you might be careful with their Vince Gill cover "Go Rest High On The Mountain". It is a beautiful song and a soul crushing video (not the church sessions version which is also excellent, but doesn't have the power of the music video).

We were all deeply affected by this song. Many wept openly while listening and no shame to them.
Tim and Chance, as they stand framed by the windows, invoke the image of the MIA-POW Flag. It also makes them look ghostly as if they were phantoms of soldiers from battles past.

A true *masterpiece* in my opinion; everything about it was so perfectly performed. A masterclass in harmonies. The impact when they all come in after Chance's verse...OMG. I've watched this countless times and still get chills and want to cry.
Sung from the perspective of a soldier, dying on the battlefield (aided along by Tim's breathy vocals). He's praising the camaraderie of his brothers in arms, while lamenting the sadness and futility of war. 💔

Home Free, at least for as long as I've been listening, has had this uncanny ability to "change" a song, feel(ing), end/conclusion. They have "a way" with words, many times it's how they're presented and therefore received. Ex. - Songs of the past that were "just too much" ... coming from HF --- it changes yer mood, understanding, the feel/vib. I don't know of any other group with that ability!!!! : ) Be Safe

I always love when the whole group harmonizes. The Ruppster has a beautiful tenor voice. His natural range falls between Austin and Rob, but his voice can soar above Austn, on occasion. Yes, this version of Home Free will send shivers through your entire body! This is so emotional. Beautifully sung by Tim and Chance, but the background and harmony of Adam, Rob and Austin is also so beautiful. It looks like a choir or actually a kind of church organ sounds. When we connect to an artist or a piece of music, we have an emotional investment at stake when we engage with others experiencing the same music or artist for the first time. We hope to see them have the same emotional response we do to justify our intense feelings. While music may not connect people in the same way we connect to it, ultimately it's going to be okay. We can take refuge in ourselves knowing we had/ have a beautiful profound human experience connecting with the artist (and others who may feel similarly) in such a beautiful way. I recall a quote from Viktor Frankl (concentration camp survivor, philosopher, and psychologist), "It was necessary to face up to the full amount of suffering, trying to keep moments of weakness and furtive tears to a minimum. But there was no need to be ashamed of tears, for tears bore witness that a man had the greatest courage, the courage to suffer." I'm genuinely touched we can share in this beautiful experience regardless of distance =)

I've never made it through without crying.
However, what really gets me is how 5 guys a few layers and it sounds like an Old fashioned Pipe organ in a Church. Or like what you'd expect to hear at the gates of Heaves. God has 1000's of singing angels but he loaned us 5.
and I'm not even a Christian.

I always think the bits with Tim and Chance in silhouette profile in front of the windows must deliberately mirror the POW/MIA flag.

There is one thing I want to say. The building there in looks haunted and ghostly.

No beatboxing in this - just a beautifully haunting song with incomparable harmonies & singing. I hope you had tissues handy. Although the video has an American slant (i.e. the flags), the song applies equally to any/every military service anywhere. By the way, Tim (bass), Austin (curly hair) & friends do fund raising for at-risk veterans: th-cam.com/video/FpCmSySVoww/w-d-xo.htmlsi=-XJPs6yQkd3IUPfx.

Please, could you check out metal singer Dan Vasc? He is from Brazil and also sings Nessun Dorma. He's got a fantastic voice. Also fascinating is his Amazing Grace.
    Greetings from Germany 🙋🏻‍♀️

There is no need to apologize. I'm very fortunate to feel these emotions. They allow me to not only fully experience the human condition but also use my understanding of these emotions to better connect with others who've felt similar emotions. Thank you for watching and your kind sentiments~

Tim is singing the words/thoughts of a dying soldier, so it's soft and low, and a bit breathy.

"Unconditional positive regard for others" is not a Biblical concept. God commanded His people to make war in certain situations in the Old Testament. War is not a good thing. War is HELL, but so are the things that cause war. Case in point, the atrocities of October 7th. Real men and women believe that some things are of such importance as to warrant risking life or even sacrificing life to achieve justice, or to achieve or retain treasured concepts, such as freedom. You sit where you are because of such men and women. Go ahead and feel righteous, but remember HOW your situation came to be.

Unconditional positive regard is an attribute as to what I've defined to be my life's task inspired by Viktor Frankl's definition. I don't claim war to be a good thing. In fact, I do my best to emphasize how much war pains me due to the loss of life that directly comes into conflict with my love of humanity and human potential. I have great respect towards veterans and the men and women who courageously risk, and sometimes sacrifice, their lives for the greater good. All of society is made up of people who have fought to better improve and protect future generations. As you've said, we are where we are now thanks to such people and I am grateful for them every day and it's my responsibility to do my part in contributing to a small aspect of society in the best ways I know how. As I said though, it isn't about feeling or appearing righteous, it's about practicing what you preach and committing to "right action". So ultimately, I believe we are on the same page, it's just my approach to verbalizing my thoughts may not have been interpreted in the way that I had hoped to express them and for that, I apologize.
