Just a small fact.. The traynor darkhorse has a baxandall type tonstack, Either early in circuit (US), late in circuit (UK), or complete bypassed (pure). Other traynors such as the YCV40 and 50 has a fender/marshall type tonestack where the pots interacts more. The gain pot is in front of the tonestack on the darkhorse, whereas on the YCV40 and blackface fenders the volume/gain pot is located after the tonestack. The YCV40 is a slightly altered blackface fender and the darkhorse is like a ycm3

A 15-watt tube amp is loud enough for rehearsals and small to medium-size gigs.
Everything else being equal, a 50-watt, or even a 100-watt, tube amp is only a little bit louder than a 15-watt tube amp.
And you would need at least a 50-watt solid-state amp to even get close to the output of a 15-watt tube amp.
What is even more mind-boggling until you truly understand watts versus volume is the fact that a 1-watt tube amp is 1/4 as loud as a 100-watt amp! Even a 1-watt tube amp is quite loud.

Definitely! I have a 1 watt Marshall JCM800 stack, and cant play it past 7 without the neoghbors complaining. I use the .1w setting, and its more than loud enough.

Hey, I always like your demos. I don't make a big deal about how a person plays when they're simply showing off the features of a guitar or amp, but have to say your playing is quite good and helps in hearing a lot more of the various settings and styles. Good work.

TRAYNOR = BULLETPROOF..... I have owned Traynor since mid 70's. A TS15 was my first amp.... I still have it and it still works... My P.A. is Yorkville Sound (they make Traynor amps).. 18 channel powered board and speakers.. 12 years and has NEVER let me down. Any of it.

@Moodyz3 , I paid $499 Canadian for the head and $299 for the cab. The head has gone up, and is now $515 Can. I love this amp.

I have this setup and Paul did a good job showing the clean side, however it can get quite dirty once you turn the gain past 2 or 3 o'clock. In the Brit mode it get's very hard-rockish (think AC/DC or Zep). Very sensitive to player inputs. I quickly got rid of my vox ac4tv after I got this. It's almost as loud as my 50 watt tube combo.

At first the tone seemed really good...but then I noticed there's no low-end at all. Having listened since to a bunch of modern Traynor amps...this seems to be common to all Yorkville-era Taynors

The old ones have plenty of bass. We have a yvm-1 voicemaster which was their PA amp. Killer rock tone that sounds like a Hiwatt when turned up.

15 watts is Approxamatly the same volume as a 100 watt solid state
    Half of 100W tube.
Most people never turn a tube amp past 4 for small live shows.

i just bought this amp yesterday, and holy fuck is it awesome. I would say that if you are going to play decent sized venues, get the 40watt version of the head. or just up the celestion speaker in the 1x12 cab to a 75w

I’m thinking of getting me one of these to sit on the top of my fender super reverb on a live gig, as a back up amp ( the super reverb has issues, and sputters now and then 🙂) how does it handle on a club stage, as in keeping up with a live band with a loud drummer and bassist?

a 100w will sound a lot more powerful and thick than a 15w though. but in terms of volume, 50w to 100w is only about a 3 or 4 db difference. of course it also depends on the amp and the speakers because watts don't = volume. but i've played gigs unmic'd with a 15w amp and did fine. however, i would still prefer a 50 or 100 as my lead tone is thicker and clearer with them and a little more volume or at least perceived volume.. depends on what you're doing.

Please do not do that. Play clean sounds in demos with your guitar volume at 10 so we hear it at full output, not the sound of a dirty tone with the guitar volume at 2 or 3. It is a decent trick for playing live if you want, but it goes not give a true representation of the amp.s clean channel. I have one of these and it sounds awesome...this vid does not sound like my Dark Horse at all. I encourage people to try one for yourself. I am a guitar teacher and this amp is really good in real life.
