woah call for aid is a MUST keep, can do so much damage especially if your board is empty what is always the problem. and once eowyn is removed 1 time for 7 mana she is very hard to play again
My favorite discovery for this deck is Archetype of Imagination, which notably is a Human Wizard. 6 mana is a lot, but making your whole board practically unblockable is a great finisher
I can't believe you cut champions of minas tirith. I've already won two games with that out because I could go all out without worrying about leaving blockers up. It's one my favorite cards in this set

I really have been liking these $50 USD upgrades. It lets you throw in a couple of niche flavour cards with some powerful options to get a good mix of low and high cost for extra opportunity to show off a range that both benefit new players and old players.
37:02 It's good to see Rachel have influenced the crew for the best. I can see a bigger focus on having fun than in winning, with all the sugestions. Keep it up people. Magic is just a make believe game for adults. Keep the imagination alive. It's about playing wars in our heads with pieces of paper(or images in a pc in my case). The whole point of it is to have fun. Life is already a struggle, don't make the game one as well. Relax and be cool with it.

I picked this deck up on prerelease night and have been in love with it ever since, even got it on MTGO when it came out on there and got some pretty spicy upgrades for it.
I have kyler sigardian emissary as my current human tribal deck but this commander, as well as Aragorn the uniter have tempted me to build another one with these colors.
Outlaw's Merriment, Cemetery Protector, Hero of Precinct One, Knight of the White Orchid, and Worthy Knight all work really well in this deck too and are pretty cheap.
My favorite precon up to date. We pre-ordered the commander decks for this set. In all our 4 player playthroughs this deck is amazing. consistency with great survivability and recovery cards. (Selfless Squire MVP!)
This was a great upgrade guide! I’m more of a fan of the $10 or $30 upgrades, but I think murph did a great job at not just spending half the budget on a single card
Some of my personal favorite upgrades for this deck are Esper Sentinel, a commander staple card with a great effect for drawing that also fits the Human theme of the deck. Rick, Steadfast Leader like mentioned in the video as well is a great addition if you can afford it. Rick is one of the best Human lords in the game that makes this deck so much more deadly. Anointed Procession is also an amazing card for this deck, It doubles all the token creatures that you make and you make a lot of tokens already in this deck. This lets you grow and swing wide very fast once you play it. Flowering of the White Tree is an amazing enchantment that not only buffs your entire field, it gives your commander and various other legendary creatures in this deck already Ward 1 which is some solid protection added on top. Since we have access to Blue I always like to add a Rhystic Study in there too, more card draw the better! Cyclonic Rift is a solid addition as well. I also recommend adding a Reliquary Tower to have another chance of getting a card that gives you unlimited hand size since this deck also comes with a thought vessel. I also added in Minas Tirith since odds are you will have a legendary creature on the field to have this come in untapped and since its a swing wide deck odds are you will be swinging with more than 2 creatures to activate its draw effect. Some cards I recommend taking out are the spirits that are added. They have some great effects but are only half effective in the deck since you will want to name Humans for all your effects like Door of Destinies and Heralds Horn. I also personally prefer to use Aragorn as my Commander at least at my usual table cause I feel like having Monarch come into play every game adds some spice to the game.
Damn that Sounds like: add all the Commander super staples and have fun. Ngl Sounds very uncreative to just add all the cards that are already in every Deck, But of its your Taste - have fun with it
@@Dennis-gt4mt That is totally fair, but its way easier for me at least to use cards I was already using in other decks that I dont really use anymore. My other main deck rn is Thalia and Gitrog Monster, so Abzan and the splash of blue in Jeskai gives those staples a nice home where they will get play again.
i'll probably just sleeve the lotr decks up as they are, and eventually upgrade them all strictly with LoTR cards, that'll be the only way they are allowed to be played. If it didn't come in the pre-con or the LoTR set packs (not including List cards), then it doesn't go in the decks.
I'm very new to commander (played some duel decks back in 2016 and built some goofy pretty lame decks with my wife just to play together for fun) but my god, picked up a few of precons this past month to get a feel for what we like playing. I absolutely love this deck, felt like some of the synergies didn't quite work / were situational until I slotted in the cards you guys suggested! Slowly upgrading all of our precons and the experience of playing them has been fantastic! Thanks so much !!
I have to say, I love the $50 budget for upgrades. I know I am just some random on the internet, but I feel that should be the standard going forward. I feel it is easier to have the option to skip on some upgrades, than not have your expert recommendations due to the budget. Thanks for the great content!
I bought all 4 LotR precons, and we finally got to play them (unaltered) recently. I was surprised when my friend picked Aragorn over Eowyn as his commander, but he ended up winning. Aragorn is no joke in this deck. He won through four board wipes. Monarch was easy to regain or maintain, and no one could block. The lifelink wasn't negligible either.
My favorite card for this deck that NO ONE MENTIONS EVER is Myrel, Shield of Argive. Stops your opponents from casting spells and activating abilities during your turn, and its a human. Now, i hear you say "BuT tHe ToKeNs ArEn'T hUmAnS" Who cares? Most of your creatures in the list are Soldiers, so you have a pile of chump blockers, and they can pile on a single big creature if you need to stop trample damage. Def worth the $14. Second: DAXOS OF MELETIS. Nigh unblockable no matter how big he is, and gives both card advantage and life gain. Super good.
I feel like you guys should test the decks before and after you upgrade them; I've heard a huge amount of positive feedback surrounding how Call for Aid feels in games despite it not reading as well.
It' is great in games where you aren't doing very well, since if you're on your way out or not doing so hot, it's super cool to get a favor from someone using someone else's board state as leverage, and the flavor of lighting the beacons to have someone else come to your aid is absolutely worth it.
I like the larger budget upgrades. I don’t know if it’s too difficult to have the $50 upgrade and then say “some other options that do this but less well are…” I also love the splurge section. I’m going to watch out for that Rick card. As well, I think even if you did a riders of Rohan upgrade it would be cool to have a part two where the exact cards you took out have to make another deck. Or, at least some of them.
Happy you uploaded this video! In fact, I decided to use Aragorn as Commander. The plan is building up the board, and then , bringing him to the battlefield when Nahiri's Resolve/Rising of the Day is on and allowing for an unblockable blow attacking with Aragorn (and becoming the Monarch).

I picked this deck up on a whim, and after playing it once in a four-way game, I am impressed with what it was capable of. But good grief did it take time to get going. It also didn't help that I neglected to cast Eowyn before the other Humans. That being said, I've been waiting for this particular guide because I do want to see it perform better.
Thoughts on maybe including a rating for the cards you remove, or a general guideline of the sort of things they should be replaced with? The way you do these upgrade guides is probably great for people who want to buy the exact cards you suggest to add, but I like to watch these sorts of videos to try to get an idea of whether or not I already own cards that might be worth adding. I mean, I have some half-decent humans, some counter spells and indestructible effects that could be useful against board wipes, but I have no idea whether or not those would actually be better in the deck than the cards you're suggesting to remove. Would love to know when a card is so bad in a certain deck that it should be removed no matter what, and when it's actually decent but there's just better stuff.
I was upgrading it with some stuff i had laying around, and bident of Thassa does good. Along with adding mirage phalanx, since the deck already has combat celebrant. Along with some stuff to add additional combats as well. Been considering maybe putting 2-3 flicker effects incase I dont draw a human I can get an ETB that way. Oh, its a pet card, since I had it for a while but never had a deck for it. Outlaw's merriment is a nice include. Get a guaranteed human every turn
Champion of the Parish! 1 white mana human soldier that gets a +1/+1 counter for every human that enters on your field. Even if you just have 1 human enter to trigger Eowyn, Champion is getting 3 counters every turn. It’s very quickly going to grow into a huge threat. Unfortunately it’s not evasive or trampley, but it’s still going to be a huge body for 1 mana upfront.
Hanweir Garrison is a good budget Adeline. Makes 2 attacking Humen on attack. Even when it gets to 1v1, you'll still get 2 humen. But yes, not good if there's bad attacks.
Great Episode! I love this deck. The deck is so much fun out of the box. One card I did swap in was Moorland Rescuer. Just as an added insurance policy.
My riders of Rohan deck pops off all the time as a newbie it’s incredible feeling to actually win! I just wish it wasn’t so hard to find them now that it’s been a year. I just got Magic a couple weeks ago and I’m desperate for the Lord of the rings cards. I only have three decks so far I’m missing the fellowship.!
I mean, Visions of Glory def can help a lot. I had 5 things on the board and played it for 5 more 1/1 humans. The next turn, I flashed it for 10 more 1/1 humans and played Eomer, who immediately gets a +1/+1 counter for every human in the battlefield, and got to hit any target for its power immediately. It was a 22/22 Eomer and he could wipe anything.
The 50 buck upgrade guide is nice, but I'd also like to see the CEDH, max power money is no object upgrade, even if it's just a quick decklist with a highlight card or two. I know now Josh has said in the past that the fetches/duals/fast mana etc are no brainers, but it can be easy to overlook stuff that people just consider auto includes in some builds. That way, we can work down on the upgrades (I don't have that expensive mana base, but I'll use that many duals, for example) for an initial build and at least have an idea of what we want to trade for/where we want to build towards
Holy crap I just realized why they put Crypt Incursion Grey Host Reinforcements into these decks: they're supposed to hit the Sauron player to battle that deck's reanimator theme
Friend used Call for Aid to steal a 20/20 Feasting Hobbit, swung for 20, then Swords it to gain 20 life themselves. I agree with Murph & Rachels take here, but that play has me keeping an eye on it for sure. As always, great work CZ team.
I think the biggest reason Call for Aid got cut is that there's no reality where it wins you a game. In fact it actually HELPS the opponent whose board you steal because if their board is threatening enough to mass Act of Treason, they're 100% the one you should be smacking with it and Call for Aid protects THEM from you. Throw in the fact that the card becomes a total dud card in a 1v1 and it's legitimately an easy cut.
So, while Goldbug is a flavor fail. I absolutely added it to my deck. Another thing I added was Adaptive Atomaton make it a human, giving humans +1/+1 with Panharmonicon I can choose another creature type ( either Knight or Soldier depending on my boardstate) the buffs will stack ( so +2/+2 for certian creatues) when Eldraine comes out and I can add Virtue of Knowledge to the deck. A bit of shenanigans with that and xenograft to give all my creatues those types, and things get scary
This is my favorite of the precons. I've been able to pull more consistent wins playing my friends. I have the hosts of mount doom too, but I dont have as much fun with it.
I find gold bug to be a handy include, as either of its sides either make humans uncounterable or makes it so they cant be the target of spells, plus. Who doesnt love the idea of transformers charging alongside the riders of rohan.
Maybe trample isn't necessary in this deck, but I wanted to add it so I looked up a few trample cards and Dragon Throne of Tarkir caught my eye, mostly because i had got it from a FNM promo pack and it was sitting in my collection. "Equipped creature has defender and '(2), ⤵️: other creatures you control gain trample and get +X/+X until end of turn, where X is this creature's power' Equip (3)" I figure no matter if you put it on Eowyn or another, the double dip on all the anthems will be delicious!
This deck is actually two commander decks smashed into one. RW Riders of Rohan and BW Glory of Gondor. I don't know why they didn't call it the United Kingdoms or Men of the West after combining the two, but i am not a marketing team member for Wizards.
I think you guys might be wrong about Increasing Devotion and Visions of Glory. Eowyn's text doesn't say anything about token or nontoken, just humans, so wouldn't they trigger her ability multiple times? If so, those are definite keepers. If this is the case, casting Increasing Devotion from the graveyard would be massive.
I didn't read all the comments, but wouldn't harsh mentor hurt the other player if they activate their ring bearer? I figure that would be pretty advantageous
I bought this a week ago and played it three times. I then added about 12 cards from white and blue. I added lots of removal and protection and a couple more counter spells. I also added 3 humans to take out the three non humans in the deck. I am lost from this point on how to make my deck more efficient

If you have Professional Face Breaker, does it make a treasure off first strike damage and then normal damage? So if you attack three opponents with three double strikers, you get six? If that's the case, seems even better since Eowyn has first strike.
A creature with First Strike does damage only occurs once. So if you hit with Eowyn, Pro Facebreaker trigger once. If you connect with 3 double strikers, each on a different opponent you will make 6 treasures. You were correct on that one
@DaKareerKilla cool, seems very strong. I meant if Eowyn attacks with another creature that doesn't have first strike, like her tokens, so if you do first strike damage with her and then normal damage with a token on the same opponent, you'll get two treasures. Just having a commander with first strike makes professional face breaker even better.
I came to this deck from playing only Markov. I really like it. It feels more like a standard deck than it does an EDH deck. But I like it. My mark off deck. I never knew how I was going to win. I always had to let the game play out.
I dunno about cutting the grey host, Yeah 4 mana for a non-human is alot but if one of the table players is dredging or milling, Exiling their entire graveyard alone could be pretty clutch and late game if you hit like even just 10 creatures we are talking about an 11 flyer with shroud 3, This thing has the potential to be a super big problem to alot of decks
I understand why you’d cut champions of Minas tirith in this deck but I actually really like ghostly prison type effects because they let you go all in much easier without fear of the crackback
I'm glad that you're trying different things out, but just to give my feedback, I prefer the $10 and $30 upgrade guides with additional splurge options, rather than a $50 guide with additional splurge options. I feel like the former is more helpful for budget players while also giving the additional options for people who want to spend more money.
To be fair universe beyond sets are more on the premium side and not really budget friendly in the first place. So maybe they were just targeting the more premium players that these sets were kind of made for. Then again my friends refused to buy upgrades because they wanted it to be pure Lord of the rings

That being said, I stand by it for these decks too, since there were a lot of people who got into Magic because of the LotR set. The decks are already $60, so I think a smaller budget would be better. Also, similar to your friends, I only upgraded with cards from the lotr to maintain the theme.
30:56 they're discussing Kindred Discovery....the text at the end of the card says "..enters the battlefield OR attacks," doesn't the OR make it a choice? If the word OR was replaced with AND, you would be required to do both?
Seeing the price of Academy Manufactor when this episode was being filmed (~$4) made me cry a little inside because I just paid twice that for a couple 😢
I lost the game because the kenessos player got out Koma on turn 4 and stormtide leviathon on turn 5, but I was able to get an angel to swing for 36 with beregond and the horn of gondor. Super fun.
Out of the box this deck has no way to deal with Artifacts or Enchantments. I find a Westfold Rider (LOTR In set) and Cathar Commando have SAC abilities to destroy said Artifacts and Enchantments. Plus they are Humans so they go with the theme of the Deck.
My favorite part in Lord of the Rings was when the Witch King said "No man can kill me" and Eowyn said "Badda bing badda boom I've got a womb" and killed it.
This is missing counters to facing an entire board of flying creature. I'm not sure what cards would do, but we can definitely need to give our humans reach somehow.
Quite surprised that you put the ronin in the deck instead of outlaw meriment, seems not that efficient in comparison (but less susceptible to removal, I must admit that)
I feel like the video focused too much on "cast more humans" vs cards that actually make humans passively. Two cards in precon, Oath of Eorl and Lossnarch Captain make humans before the combat step which will trigger Eowyn. This deck draws so many cards between Eowyn, monarch, and other sources that i have to discard nearly every turn, so its not too hard to discard Dearly Departed.

As Johnny-player, my personal favorite upgrade is Kiki-Jiki xD Just one card to change just tribal into combo-deck. All other pieces already there

I picked this deck up on a whim, and after playing it once in a four-way game, I am impressed with what it was capable of. But good grief did it take time to get going. It also didn't help that I neglected to cast Eowyn before the other Humans. That being said, I've been waiting for this particular guide because I do want to see it perform better.
Thoughts on maybe including a rating for the cards you remove, or a general guideline of the sort of things they should be replaced with? The way you do these upgrade guides is probably great for people who want to buy the exact cards you suggest to add, but I like to watch these sorts of videos to try to get an idea of whether or not I already own cards that might be worth adding. I mean, I have some half-decent humans, some counter spells and indestructible effects that could be useful against board wipes, but I have no idea whether or not those would actually be better in the deck than the cards you're suggesting to remove. Would love to know when a card is so bad in a certain deck that it should be removed no matter what, and when it's actually decent but there's just better stuff.
I was upgrading it with some stuff i had laying around, and bident of Thassa does good. Along with adding mirage phalanx, since the deck already has combat celebrant. Along with some stuff to add additional combats as well. Been considering maybe putting 2-3 flicker effects incase I dont draw a human I can get an ETB that way. Oh, its a pet card, since I had it for a while but never had a deck for it. Outlaw's merriment is a nice include. Get a guaranteed human every turn

Champion of the Parish! 1 white mana human soldier that gets a +1/+1 counter for every human that enters on your field.
Even if you just have 1 human enter to trigger Eowyn, Champion is getting 3 counters every turn. It’s very quickly going to grow into a huge threat. Unfortunately it’s not evasive or trampley, but it’s still going to be a huge body for 1 mana upfront.

Hanweir Garrison is a good budget Adeline. Makes 2 attacking Humen on attack. Even when it gets to 1v1, you'll still get 2 humen. But yes, not good if there's bad attacks.
Goldbug include is like the "how do you turn this on" moment from age of empires 2

My riders of Rohan deck pops off all the time as a newbie it’s incredible feeling to actually win! I just wish it wasn’t so hard to find them now that it’s been a year. I just got Magic a couple weeks ago and I’m desperate for the Lord of the rings cards. I only have three decks so far I’m missing the fellowship.!
I mean, Visions of Glory def can help a lot. I had 5 things on the board and played it for 5 more 1/1 humans. The next turn, I flashed it for 10 more 1/1 humans and played Eomer, who immediately gets a +1/+1 counter for every human in the battlefield, and got to hit any target for its power immediately. It was a 22/22 Eomer and he could wipe anything.

The 50 buck upgrade guide is nice, but I'd also like to see the CEDH, max power money is no object upgrade, even if it's just a quick decklist with a highlight card or two. I know now Josh has said in the past that the fetches/duals/fast mana etc are no brainers, but it can be easy to overlook stuff that people just consider auto includes in some builds. That way, we can work down on the upgrades (I don't have that expensive mana base, but I'll use that many duals, for example) for an initial build and at least have an idea of what we want to trade for/where we want to build towards
Holy crap I just realized why they put Crypt Incursion Grey Host Reinforcements into these decks: they're supposed to hit the Sauron player to battle that deck's reanimator theme
Friend used Call for Aid to steal a 20/20 Feasting Hobbit, swung for 20, then Swords it to gain 20 life themselves. I agree with Murph & Rachels take here, but that play has me keeping an eye on it for sure. As always, great work CZ team.
I think the biggest reason Call for Aid got cut is that there's no reality where it wins you a game. In fact it actually HELPS the opponent whose board you steal because if their board is threatening enough to mass Act of Treason, they're 100% the one you should be smacking with it and Call for Aid protects THEM from you. Throw in the fact that the card becomes a total dud card in a 1v1 and it's legitimately an easy cut.
Can you guys do in universe upgrades on all of the Lotr precons??
So, while Goldbug is a flavor fail. I absolutely added it to my deck. Another thing I added was Adaptive Atomaton make it a human, giving humans +1/+1 with Panharmonicon I can choose another creature type ( either Knight or Soldier depending on my boardstate) the buffs will stack ( so +2/+2 for certian creatues) when Eldraine comes out and I can add Virtue of Knowledge to the deck. A bit of shenanigans with that and xenograft to give all my creatues those types, and things get scary
This is my favorite of the precons. I've been able to pull more consistent wins playing my friends. I have the hosts of mount doom too, but I dont have as much fun with it.
I find gold bug to be a handy include, as either of its sides either make humans uncounterable or makes it so they cant be the target of spells, plus. Who doesnt love the idea of transformers charging alongside the riders of rohan.
Maybe trample isn't necessary in this deck, but I wanted to add it so I looked up a few trample cards and Dragon Throne of Tarkir caught my eye, mostly because i had got it from a FNM promo pack and it was sitting in my collection.
"Equipped creature has defender and '(2), ⤵️: other creatures you control gain trample and get +X/+X until end of turn, where X is this creature's power'

I figure no matter if you put it on Eowyn or another, the double dip on all the anthems will be delicious!

I think you guys might be wrong about Increasing Devotion and Visions of Glory. Eowyn's text doesn't say anything about token or nontoken, just humans, so wouldn't they trigger her ability multiple times? If so, those are definite keepers. If this is the case, casting Increasing Devotion from the graveyard would be massive.

I bought this a week ago and played it three times. I then added about 12 cards from white and blue. I added lots of removal and protection and a couple more counter spells. I also added 3 humans to take out the three non humans in the deck. I am lost from this point on how to make my deck more efficient

Just add in some Intagible Virtue-like effects and voila! You can keep most monarchy synergies intact!
If you have Professional Face Breaker, does it make a treasure off first strike damage and then normal damage? So if you attack three opponents with three double strikers, you get six? If that's the case, seems even better since Eowyn has first strike.
A creature with First Strike does damage only occurs once. So if you hit with Eowyn, Pro Facebreaker trigger once.
If you connect with 3 double strikers, each on a different opponent you will make 6 treasures. You were correct on that one
@DaKareerKilla cool, seems very strong. I meant if Eowyn attacks with another creature that doesn't have first strike, like her tokens, so if you do first strike damage with her and then normal damage with a token on the same opponent, you'll get two treasures. Just having a commander with first strike makes professional face breaker even better.
I came to this deck from playing only Markov. I really like it. It feels more like a standard deck than it does an EDH deck. But I like it. My mark off deck. I never knew how I was going to win. I always had to let the game play out.
I dunno about cutting the grey host, Yeah 4 mana for a non-human is alot but if one of the table players is dredging or milling, Exiling their entire graveyard alone could be pretty clutch and late game if you hit like even just 10 creatures we are talking about an 11 flyer with shroud 3, This thing has the potential to be a super big problem to alot of decks

I understand why you’d cut champions of Minas tirith in this deck but I actually really like ghostly prison type effects because they let you go all in much easier without fear of the crackback
I'm glad that you're trying different things out, but just to give my feedback, I prefer the $10 and $30 upgrade guides with additional splurge options, rather than a $50 guide with additional splurge options. I feel like the former is more helpful for budget players while also giving the additional options for people who want to spend more money.
To be fair universe beyond sets are more on the premium side and not really budget friendly in the first place. So maybe they were just targeting the more premium players that these sets were kind of made for. Then again my friends refused to buy upgrades because they wanted it to be pure Lord of the rings
@@izzydarkhart4144 I was talking about the budget generally, not with these precons specifically. That being said, I stand by it for these decks too, since there were a lot of people who got into Magic because of the LotR set. The decks are already $60, so I think a smaller budget would be better.
Also, similar to your friends, I only upgraded with cards from the lotr to maintain the theme.
30:56 they're discussing Kindred Discovery....the text at the end of the card says "..enters the battlefield OR attacks," doesn't the OR make it a choice? If the word OR was replaced with AND, you would be required to do both?

I lost the game because the kenessos player got out Koma on turn 4 and stormtide leviathon on turn 5, but I was able to get an angel to swing for 36 with beregond and the horn of gondor. Super fun.
Out of the box this deck has no way to deal with Artifacts or Enchantments. I find a Westfold Rider (LOTR In set) and Cathar Commando have SAC abilities to destroy said Artifacts and Enchantments.
Plus they are Humans so they go with the theme of the Deck.
Did they record this a while ago or did the prices crash overnight? I'm looking at combat celebrant at 6 bucks, door of destinies at 10, etc. Woof!

My favorite part in Lord of the Rings was when the Witch King said "No man can kill me" and Eowyn said "Badda bing badda boom I've got a womb" and killed it.
This is missing counters to facing an entire board of flying creature. I'm not sure what cards would do, but we can definitely need to give our humans reach somehow.

Quite surprised that you put the ronin in the deck instead of outlaw meriment, seems not that efficient in comparison (but less susceptible to removal, I must admit that)
I feel like the video focused too much on "cast more humans" vs cards that actually make humans passively. Two cards in precon, Oath of Eorl and Lossnarch Captain make humans before the combat step which will trigger Eowyn.
This deck draws so many cards between Eowyn, monarch, and other sources that i have to discard nearly every turn, so its not too hard to discard Dearly Departed.
