Dan Grieves spoke about this. I dont think it has to do with "increasing the surface the ball glides on", but maximizing "groove bite" by being more square at impact. Attacking the ball with a square face = the ball slides up the club face vertically to maximize "groove bite" on the ball Attacking the ball with an open face = the ball slides up the club face at an angle. The grooves cant effectively bite into the ball at an angle.
Wouldn’t the open face be used in this case to protect against digging given he is adding wrist hinge and speed to a shot from a tight lie? While it doesn’t add spin, preventing the leading edge from digging and using a little extra bounce to maximize ball to groove contact would make sense
@@ahastar1141 I agree with you about an open face to expose bounce to avoid digging. I think an open face adds spin, but has less bite vs square at impact. I make up for it by hitting with speed and more loft. It seems possible to open the face and still be square at impact, but nothing I can pull off. An open stance + open face has a super weird club path to me.
The way he gets that crazy spin is by opening the face, hitting ball before ground and finishing the swing with hands low to the left. It’s like he’s trying to slice it if that makes sense
It's not the amount of surface, it's because of the gear effect getting the ball low on the face, this crispy shot occurs naturally when you hit it from the green. QED
Not the same. Rory’s was low flight yours looked higher. He also did not take a divot you did. Use a new wedge and hit down on it but don’t take a divot and you’ll get the same exact shot. I’ve been working on less ulner deviation and my miss is exactly this - thin and it comes out low with tons of spin.
@@NbaYoungboy692 it’s a TaylorMade video. “Rory teaches one hop stop” or something like that. The technique actually helped me in a lot of aspects of chipping after some practice
Rory is what the high handicapper believes their game should be. Drive the piss out of the ball and attempt all the open face 60 degree wedge shots lol
Mans put two clips of Rory like we wouldn’t notice 😤😏
two clips of Rory??
@@golfslump I believe this was a compliment, stating your shot was similar to Rorys!
@@golfslumphe just means your shot was just like his. Just complimenting you’re smooth buttery swing
@@golfslumpit’s a compliment 😂

Playing onto a raised green makes a difference for these shots. Tiger played a very similar one in the masters in ‘05 I think it was.

Considering you’re also not playing on tour tournament greens I’d say that’s pretty damn close brotha! Keep on putting out content!
Thanks man!! Pretty happy with that!! But I could never do this under pressure
Channel keeps getting better and better, thanks for all the dope information, my game has improved because of you.
Appreciate it!!!!! 🫶🏻
@golfslump you always have the best tips… Can’t wait to try this, please provide more backspin videos and keep up the great work 😊
This is a very risky shot though! But thanks for the kind words!

Yours had heaps of side spin too. Rory hit everything square to create more spin and stop dead stoll
not to mention rory did it with the slope running away from him 🤯
His feet are open. Your feet are closed. Huge difference.
I can't wait to try this. Also Nice shot.
Try it at your own risk!
took him 10 swing edits...
I don't think I've ever seen a shot as good as that bar tigers clutch masters chip at 16.
I dont think theres a single golfer out there who doesn't know this shot
Davis Love III hit the same shot at 16 in 1999. Got him to within one of the lead, but Olazábal came out on top.
@@rollyhustle He was in a similar position but it was a completely different lie and situation.
Nice shots!
Thanks!

Rory put out a tutorial video of his technique a few years ago. Only difference was ball location
What’s the name of the vid ?

Not even close
Looks like he’s trying to add loft and hold that angle
Bet he missed the putt. Just like he did at the 2025 US open.
lol 😂
Too soon

Nice
When yoi have the worlds greatest players questioning how you pull a shot off like that yoi know its incredible.⛳
This is true!!
Now miss a 2 ft putt
In Pinehurst, we call that "pulling the string."
Ooooooh I like it
back spin
ball 90%
club 9%
technique 1%
Slight uphill never does you any harm either 😉
Hahaha
I think rorys was perfectly square. He started with it open then closed it on impact
What is the iron club number , pitching or 60 degrees ?
60
Nippy🎉
Twice as high
Now miss the putt 😂
😅
Pretty fg.
Rory choked. And went home without saying congratulations poor sportsmanship
He wasn't in the same group as Bryson so why did he have to hang around and wait to congratulate him?
what wedge did u use?
Prolly 60 degree
60!
56 ?
60!
@@golfslumpOpen your feet.... probably use a 56 too (thanks for being the best teacher)
Not quite
Thai spinner??
Ooooooh I should do a video on this
Ball glides over the face? Lol. Loot at wedge impact in slo mo bro
