The things I see pulling graveyard shifts will maybe even have your head spinning mate, none the less you have got great knowledge as an instructor and can read traffic well like myself. It is great seeing a really engaging driving instructor, not just one who wants to get in and make his quid and get out from the learner. I still buffer for L platers here in Australia when I can in the truck and know they appreciate it so they can focus on just driving a light vehicle instead of having people right up their asses... Clip 8: the beep might not be for you. The van to your right is far enough ahead they may not be able to see the lights. I often beep in this case as they've overshot. • @SGz_Eliminated
      @SGz_Eliminated ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think that's not a legitimate reason to use your horn, firstly a beep doesn't mean go its for an alert/warning/danger. Second if a driver has overshot the lights and for some reason there aren't any on the other end they'll still likely know by the halting of the other lanes of traffic and if not after several seconds maybe you could alert them to move but the driver in the video honked after about 1 second. Lastly this clip specifically, there's three lanes of traffic leaving that light so even if the van can't see the lights he's going to see the other two lanes moving off.
      If the van was sat there not moving for a decent amount of time I could believe it was to notify them that they could go but this was about 1 second, it was definitely driven by impatience and not doing them a favour.

    I’ve followed your channel for years now and I always love how you react to SO MANY bad drivers.
    I can’t drive myself though I did my preliminaries around 35 years ago in my brother’s van; this was a Ford box van mark 2 I believe and there just wasn’t enough space for me in the driver’s seat ! I had the seat all the way back on the base ratchet and being 6ft 3 at the time, with very long legs, I kept catching my knees on the dash’ under the steering wheel, meaning I couldn’t move my foot quick enough between pedals (steering columns were fixed back then), so I kept jumping the brakes.
    Two weeks after trying to teach me the basics of driving, my brother had to scrap his van as it had a broken chassis ! Whether I had anything to do with it I’ll never know.
    I did try to get behind the wheel of several cars just to see if I could fit but I always had problems ! Despite being very tall, I was also very hefty (still am but not as heavy these days), so I never learnt to drive, but I do know my Highway Code pretty well even with its updates and the amount of idiots I see as a pedestrian alarms me. Living in the suburbs of Manchester in the foothills of the Pennines, I see lots of ‘passing through’ traffic who have no idea of the road layouts and I’ve witnessed many accidents.
    One of my other brothers has become a driving instructor as a side line to his main job and is a conscientious guy. We all learned as children to respect one another and help if we could. Our dad joined the police force in 1951 and they taught him to drive, so we learnt from one of the best drivers of the time !
    Keep up the good work Ashley !

      Easy argument is he passed the lights on green and the white van in front stalled. He is now in the junction and it is not safe to stay in the junction over a blind hill. So he cleared the junction as quickly and safely as possible.
      We all know he jumped the lights but it's never going to be a conviction.

Believe you me most failed in the first 5 minutes, a few told me I’ll be fine, they didn’t want to pay me to sort them out, Low and behold all of them failed. The ones who did take the course mostly passed. Sadly DSA as known then got rid of the taxi test, another income stream gone!

    Ashley impatient HGV drivers may be a good topic for a video, travelling on the M6 early this morning in a 60mph average speed camera area, the matrix was also showing an obstruction warning so I kept my speed to 55 and was keeping a lookout ahead in lane 1, then an approaching HGV started tailgating my car, flashing his lights and then using his horn after he eventually overtook all for an extra 5mph, why didn't just overtake right away there was plenty of space with little traffic!

I normally use my body to comunícate intent, at chossing it’s right up to the front for I’m going to jump it when safe, normal for waiting for green man and then I take a large step back for emergency services to say I’m giving up my right of way and won’t cross even on a green man till you passed, the thing I hate is that last one means that on the smart ones the wait button gets canceled cos I’m not right under the sensor

    The van driver who stopped to pick up the injured bird was a Saint. I hope he found someone to care for it and nurse it back to health. I'm not certain about the legality of potentially holding up traffic to do so but I don't care either. You're aware of my route from some of the videos I send you (another one pending). One morning after gale force winds, I stopped (after putting on my hazards) and got out to clear a branch that had fallen into the road. It was a narrow country road barely wide enough for 2 cars to pass each other. The car behind me waited patiently and gave me a quick flash when I drove off. I like to think he meant "nice one, mate."

    Using my bus pass more now fuel prices crazy, but gives chance to observe things. Saw a taxi driver in stationary traffic queuing for a crossing a few days ago, sounding his horn repeatedly at the car in front as he wanted to turn left at a junction in front of that car, if the car had moved forward it would have blocked a marked box junction and prevented vehicles turning in from the opposite direction or coming out from the left to turn right, yet it would have been quite intimidating for the driver to hold still and obey the law. This is far from uncommon behaviour with taxi drivers in my experience on the road.

    • @caitthenerd7470
      @caitthenerd7470 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nobody seems to understand box junctions. There's a roundabout near the Cribbs Causeway shopping centre in Bristol, where one of the exits merges from 2 lanes into 1 due to roadworks. There's always a clog of traffic there, (because of course nobody can merge in turn) and it sometimes backs up onto the roundabout itself. I'm coming home from work one day, taking the roadworks exit. Due to the stopped traffic, I hold back from the box junction which keeps the entrance before my exit clear. So what happens? People from said entrance pile into the box, clogging it up. Traffic from that junction just keeps on pulling me out, leaving me stranded. I eventually just had to push my way in and sit in the box junction, or I would've been stuck there for ages. I didn't want to, but what choice did I have?

  • @zijkhal8356
    @zijkhal8356 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    When I was a learner driver, while approach an intersection (green lights) there were a couple cars turning left across my lane (right-hand traffic, so that's the once which turns across the oncoming lane)
    That's not a problem in and of itself as there was a sufficient gap in front of me for a car or two to turn, but even a third wanted to just turn, and, while I did not have to emergency brake, I had to pretty firmly step on the brakes to avoid a collision.
    I was surprised that people do such things when they see a learner driver approaching. (I hope they saw me approaching)

    This video deserves an Oscar. Absolute perfection.
    Straight out of the gate, a beautiful example of how a simple observation gives you a HUGE amount of information. Most drivers would have been up behind those two cars and run into the back of them when things got brake-checky. A simple observation of steering direction allowed you to anticipate that situation before the drivers even got angry - amazing.

    Hi Ashley I do enjoy your videos but can I be critical of you for a moment please well I ask but here it is anyway 😜 hope you don't mind what I've got to say..
    In this video you provided the space for the women to move around the cyclist but she didn't take it and then beeped the cyclist, totally agree with your comments but can I ask as a point of self reflection do you feel you where focusing more on this person's behaviour afterwards than on what's ahead, you did keep watching the driver behind for a little while taking up some of your attention. Sorry I'm not saying you weren't driving appropriately but my question to you is did that other drivers behaviour distract you at all and did that effect your own driving or behaviour in anyway?
    It is something I find I do sometimes and it's easy to get caught up with the terrible driving of others and focus in on what that driver is doing.
    Best wishes buddy thank you as always for your content I hope my comment is received as intended and keep up the good work of encouraging better driving.

    • @ashley_neal
      @ashley_neal  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Afternoon Christian 👋 thanks for your comment as it's a good question. With what we do as driving instructors our observational skills have to be aware of many things at once. For example the observations that a regular driver does has to be multiplied by three times and then condensed into 30% of our attention as 70% needs to be with the student. This is the biggest skill that trainee instructors have difficulty with. Occasionally you may find on my videos me going quiet in the midst of an explanation to concentrate on perhaps an emergency service vehicle. The situation you describe was simple as there was nothing in front or surrounding. Keep safe, Ashley.

Firstly, man van wasn't centrally parked up in same lane just behind bird and no hazard lights preventing access of traffic coming down that lane at any time risk of crushing bird wasnt operational and on continuous until bird is open boxed, wrapped around towel and road lane made safe by traffic officers and RSPCA. If you see something that small on road in front, it best to block the lane, layby or main road if safe to do so with hazard lights on facing front of injured bird. Exit vehicle facing oncoming traffic, place cone sign, warning triangle with due care mostly at front driver side of van and take precaution facing oncoming traffic than facing away. Make sure road is clear, before moving cone and triangle back in van and dont turn you head to oncoming traffic behind you.

      This is how they fail student drivers on purpose in Romania (and maybe some other countries). They send you into some extremely busy streets and ask you to do a parallel park. What usually happens is you put on your indicators as normal, move past the parking spot (since you are obviously required to reverse into it), and then everyone behind you does not give a crap and pile right behind you, not giving you any space. Any other driver would not park there, or would take another trip around the block. But all student drivers know is that there is a police officer next to them who told them to park there, so they have to park. This creates a deadlock, the student has no idea what to do so they freeze up, the police officer has to take over, and you're failed... unless you're willing to pay a small fee, that is.

      I'm not sure a stiffer test is the answer. All these idiots (assuming they actually have a licence) have presumably met the test standard, which in the UK is pretty rigorous compared to many places in the world. It's what happens next that's important: they've been taught what they should do, but they choose not to do it, and that's all to do with mind-set. They're either too lazy, too arrogant or take so llttle pride in maintaing standards, and that can only be overcome by much more initial training or constant refresher training. Professional PCV & HGV drivers have to do a mandatory 35 hours every five years to keep their Certificate of Professional Competence. Maybe it's time all drivers had to do one day a year refresher training with somebody like Ashley?

    I got totally distracted at 10:10 when I saw the Liver Building! I was looking for the birds rather than at the road. 🤭

    No comment that it was a Taxi driver in Clip 11 that actually let her out?

    Here's my fail of the day. two lads riding side by side on a busyish road in the right lane (watson road, blackpool). I shouted at them as I drove past: "what are you doing on this side of the road, you idiots." when I returned down the road, they looked sheepish. Hopefully they'll take more care next time.

    4:18, see how close the two pedestrians are to the kerb, if they had fallen towards the road could the learner have avoided them? I would have moved away from them. Clip 8 6:00 the van to the right has not moved, Ashley does not know which driver beeped so why does he think he or his pupil were the ones being beeped? FWIW there is not always impatience behind the beep, it is just done for fun as soon as the lights go green. I found this out from someone else. 7:47 learner indicates to change to lane 2 and gets told to cancel indicator and stay in lane 1, 8:45, learner comes to a stop behind parked cars unable to get to lane 2. Lack of planning by the instructor, not thinking about what may happen. 8:49 traffic now comes to a stand still and "backs up" as someone kindly stops for the learner. This bunching caused by lack of planning to move to another lane to avoid an obstruction does not aid traffic flow. 9:24, the on coming car is just as cautious or bullying as Ashley, perhaps Ashley thinks "I was there first so I have right of way", the other driver may be thinking " I'm bigger so I have right of way". The reaction, just peed off he felt he had to stop and the other car carried on. That is what happens when you meet someone as determined or more determined to go first.
    11:55 de-clutch in a corner? De-clutch due to a bend being tight?

      @radish pea Would you take me up on an offer of a free driving assessment by me? I'll drive to where you live, take you out on the roads and we can record the training so you can highlight your skills on the channel. I'm sure everyone would agree it would be an interesting watch. Let me know!

      @@Jonc25 always nice to debate comments with people. What was the point of your comment, to disagree with me or to agree with me? Ashley likes your comment I bet you are chuffed but he will not explain why I am wrong and it seems you have not either, no one has learned anything from your comments. I thought the whole point of the video was driver education. I note someone else commented on lack of slowing at the last clip when the van stopped for the bird. A valid point made. Go on mate, knock yourself out not explaining why I am wrong.

      @@ashley_neal you asked me for direct contact some time ago, I emailed you and got no reply. You have not disagreed with anything I said on this video. Naturally you have asked a question where I am
      set up to fail. Is that why you did it publicly? If I thought for one moment our meeting would be friendly I would accept. Your intention I believe would not be honourable. Feel free to think my driving is generally poor. Oh and no doubt you thought (knew) I would not accept.

      I don't know if it's the reality, but sometimes cycling it feels as though you are dealing with some people who never ever overtake anything else, and just don't really know what to do.
