Heroes that overthrew an injust king...? By attacking and killing innocent farmers, stealing their lands, and salting their fields? By attacking and murdering anyone they could in Westfall and other areas they operated in? The Defias were not heroes. They were not freedom fighters. Yes, they got screwed over by politics, but then they all immediately turned evil as a result. It's one thing to strike against the king and the soldiers sworn to the king, but killing the innocent people who aren't involved at all and have no idea what is even going on is beyond wrong and far worse than what happened to the defias. They didn't get paid for a job. Boohoo. They could've put their lives back together and moved on. Instead they chose to murder countless innocents. Those people never had the chance to improve their situation because they were killed by the Defias. Naw. Nothing good or honorable or just about anything relating to the Defias. They are straight up greedy and corrupt.
The Defias Brotherhood is honestly one of my favorite factions of the game. Their story is very interesting and I'd love to see them go back to Stone masonry in a future expansion.
"Yer a good lad, Varian. Now our two cities are connected through the Deeprun Tram. Our alliance is stronger then ever. What? You need gold to pay the workers? No, sadly we have no gold. We dwarves don't concern ourselves with material needs. We don't really know how gold looks like, honestly. Mines? What mines? Khaz Modan is full of farms, not mines. We are honest, farming people ... of the mountains. I should really go now, me wee brother, Brann, asked me to see some of his new artif... , I mean some of his art. He is an artist laddie. See ya!"
At estimated 5:03, since VanCleef basically built Stormwind, and afterwards built the Horde, that means he knew of the weaknesses of Stormwind and how to protect Stormwind against the Horde. Thus, we can safely assume the ship would somehow deal massive damage and obliterate the walls of Stormwind.
You also have to consider Vancleef isn't a moron he wouldn't just attack it in broad daylight unless something was happenig to take the eyes of the ports. He would make some kind of distraction and than make his assault. So it would definately have done damage to SW.
I really wish blizzard would do more with the defias brotherhood the westfall questline was so good, and the origin of the group is also such a good story
Skittlez12350 Agreed. But what could they do? Making up another child would be... repetitive. Then the story would become less interesting and that's not something we want to see. A good idea would be to make it so that a group of rogues that were sentenced to death were able to escape at the very last moment and bring the Defias brotherhood back to life. That would be awesome.
So the Alliance displaced a group of workers from their land and made them build a city, promising them payment, and after they had finished the job, the nobles of Stormwind refused to pay them, after they had rioted for being blatantly cheated, they seek justice and yet they are branded as evil. I am actually rooting for these guys right now, they are the victims here.
Same here. I suddenly regret killing all of those Defias mobs and clearing the deadmines. Killing hard-working craftsmen who've been cheated/wronged by rich and uppety-cunt nobility is not good :(
Onyxia was controlling them, Varian wanted to pay them but the Nobles were too powerful. When his wife died in the rebellion he became depressed and Onyxia took advantage of his fragile mental state to secure power.
While Vanessa claims her own life. You must take into account she's a brilliant woman. Smart and tactical. Who knows if she could fake her own death there? She didn't explode in a mess of gore despite how close that explosive was to herself. She could be faking and Blizzard could use it against us as a possible injury of her own. The Defias Storyline shouldn't end in Cataclysm and is one of the only few branching Human stories that doesn't involve Varian and Anduin directly. I would love to see if Vanessa's fate wasn't ended there. I would expect someone smarter not just die like that. And hopefully Vanessa might make a return in the future.

I think he mean that back in the day, when u achived something in WoW it felt like an dam bomb rush of adrenaline, now it feels alot more like when you have been to the gym after a semi hard workout where you were kinda tirred, and you just feel like Arr :) nice and now on to next thing. But i do get ur point of view WoW is still fun, but to people like me who have played it for years, other things are just more fun.. :) Plus now i do alot of things in real life, so its cool. Personnal i think its good that they do this the way they do. ( except from the buying lv 90s thats kinda fucked, one free sure that a good idear.. But come on, taking the challange away (again)..
I loved this one by far. :D Made me remember the first time I played wow was after cataclysm. I read the quests but, was confused on this woman speaking to the people and such. Now I know this was a story that began before Cata. Also I didn't know deadmines had a lvl 85 run o_o I would have seen all of that other stuff.
i was always interested in the defias brotherhood lore, kinda sucks they took out the defias gear set :\ hopefully they make more lore about them in WoW and bring back that gear in a later date!
wow, you learn about the brotherhood as far back as the quest "report to goldshire" in which if you read the message to marshal dughan, then go to "thieves" you can see that it speak about "A Brotherhood"
JESUS FUCKING CHRIST, I WAS RIGHT! SHE SURVIVED! In Legion, Vanessa Vancleef makes a return in a quest: Honor Among Thieves in the Rogues class hall. I SHIT YOU NOT! www.wowhead.com/news=250014/patch-7-0-1-legion-beta-build-20740-achievements-class-followers-professions-ico Look up Vanessa Vancleef, and see she survived! That's not cool man, no one asked for legion spoilers in this video. It's relevant but totally unexpected. Like me posting Star wars spoilers in an Avengers movie. Totally inconsiderate
Alexander Edward That's Meatball, and he's a gnoll, but an entirely different character. He explodes in gore. But there are priests and medics that resurrect the fallen combatants. Which explains why more people can join the Fight Clubs.
+Travis Gibbons I think she died in the actual story but was just brought back as retcon probably. Since in Legion theyre bringing back everyone who dies. Arthas probbaly comes back at some point also
I really don't believe Vanessa is dead. Her death could have just been in the mind of the heroes under her venom. She was too well voice acted and fleshed out to just be killed off like that. I'm sure she'll return.
I dont think so, now we are fighting Dragons that are trying to destroy Azeroth and Orcs that are empowered with evil god stuff.. I think thats better than just a human teen who has like no lore at all.
Martin R Vanessa herself may not be very fleshed out but I think the Defias are an excellent enemy for stormwind, they may not be as powerful as deathwing, as ferocious as the orcs, but their cause is more righteous, more justified, and that makes them even more dangerous in many ways.
Martin R Well I hope they come up with something new for the alliance to face, everything has been pretty horde centric for a while and I wanna see some turmoil in their side for once. :P If not the Defias then something interesting.
I'd love to ask one question, Nobbel. If Edwin was killed five years ago (As of the Cataclysm), and Vanessa was a very small child by then (I presume 5-9 years of age) and five years later Vanessa is a full grown woman? I would have to say from my assumption her maximum age is 14. This is merely my speculation, that I ave been wondering about ever since the Westfall Questline in the Cataclysm.
It's not like they have separate models for 5-year-old 10-year-old 15-year-old and adult characters. We don't know (I guess) her age when she had her child model... she could've been 14 then...
Nobbel87 This is true. But I just have some trouble making sense of the fact that if she was around 14 years of age, then how does she look like a full grown woman? I guess WoW just has a hard time with time, sometimes... As for Demonist's comment, They don't have those models but they could of easily made a model like that. Oh, well. Maybe I'm thinking of it too much, hmm? :P
I'm going to watch this tomorrow with a cup of coffee, cause I like drinking coffee while listening to a good story from Nobbel. ps you made me go back to wow and I left during the burning crusade xpac and I'm enjoying the game.
For anybody who has read A Feast For Crows (one of the books in the series A Song of Ice and Fire from which Game of Thrones was adapted from), Septon Meribald's speech about war and broken men draws many parallels to the story of the Defias and the Stonemasons.
idk, thrall always wanted peace between the horde and the alliance. now Garrosh might have used them, but not openly, to take out members of the alliance undercover.
Some suggestions: The Scarlet Crusade Kul Tiras The Grimtotem The Dwarven Clans Mograine and the Ashbringer The Kirin Tor Kel'Thuzad Lady Vashj Anub'arak Kael'thas Tirion and Eitrigg Thrall Drek'thar Kadghar Danath Trollbane Kudran Wildhammer The Troll Clans The Demon Lords (Kil'jaden, Archimonde and Mannoroth) ♥
I lvoed the new Westfall questline with Vanessa, it was actually a pretty nice little twist of events and a pretty funny one when it started out! Great video, I never knew any of that about the Brotherhood. Makes me feel bad about killing them all in Deadmines . :( I liked how they changed Deadmines too, pretty neat little quest area now!
LOL what? How was the new questline with Vanessa at all "a pretty funny one" AT ALL. in anyway? What? It was always serious and very well done in a VERY engaging manner!
@@Gadget-Walkmen my guy I wrote this 8 years ago, I don't remember what I enjoyed about it. Clearly I thought it was amusing and didn't say it wasn't well done or engaging just that it was fun. Oh, maybe because it starts with the guy investigating blanchys death and it references the sunglasses csi guy?
@@jinx17 Oh yeah THAT, that I can see what you think is funny. And I can agree with that because it's done in a very amusing tongue-in-cheek way. And time is irrelevant so it doesn't matter if it was 8 years ago, as long as you can remember, which you did.
Ever sense Vanilla, I have loved to do the dungeon: Deadmines, Also known as VC, because back then DM meant Dire Maul. Defias Brotherhood, was legit. I remember twinking my 19 rogue in Defias gear, and getting the 2 blades VanCleef dropped. I was happy to see they added a story to it in the newer Expansions.. And I hope they keep going. The armor that VanCleef wore, I know it has a name, and that Leatherworkers could make it. But I don't remember what it was called. Wish I knew :D I would totally make a character to look exactly like Edward VC... :D Anyways TY for making a video on the lore, Hopefully It will keep expanding on this. With WoD I hope defias raise up and decide to fight, or something.
A friend of mine almost died when he fell backwards from a standing position and hit his head on the flat concrete. (He was doing a keg stand and was drunk and dizzy/light headed from the keg stand). Luckily no permanent damage but it was a painful recovery process (for months he was in almost constant pain). Never underestimate the power of a rock!

***** the softest spot is the temple. And its entirely possible a second impact on the ground or something finished her off or something. a hit like that could still have caused some brain damage maybe even some brain hemoraging. Didnt neccessarily have to break open her skull like an egg.
"Fantastic job"? "Better than before"? The layout of Stormwind is a mess. The roads are hard to follow, carts cannot fit through the bridges or the tunnels, city gates are impossible to close, sewers run throughout the whole city and the prison is inside the city. Not to mention during a siege those few bridges would cause the city to fall. If the original city was similar then no wonder the Horde could destroy it so easily.
They were the hard-working people of the Alliance. What did they get for building an entire city? Nothing, they even got slaughtered in the end. And the Alliance dare call the Horde monsters?
It's funny how in the new questline, Varian promises to send more troops to pacify the region and not, for example, food and supplies to take care of the root issue. He would've made a good Warchief.
What happened to them is really no excuse to go around assaulting innocent farmers and murdering people. The Stonemasosn were ripped off, it's true, but they took it way too far.
ok Reasoning for this single ship being a huge threat was not the ship it self but the Horde Design it symbolized that these humans and members of the Defias might have joined the Horde (hidden SI7 Report only viewable to alliance Rogues in the deadmines Gate area at 6am server time) also if you look at the ships model after Cata Launch the bow of the ship has a Huge Cannon assumedly the same cannon that's mounted on the Orgrims Hammer in Ice Crown that cannon at the end of MoP could fire Ironstars (speculation) all that makes this ship easily able to devastate and costal city.
Hey Nobbel! In Legion, Vanessa VanCleef is making a return, and it appears that she faked her death in Deadmines Heroic. She becomes your follower in the Rogue Artifact weapon quest, but she was supposed to be the "Champion" that you become. After you speak with Garona Halforcen, the Rogue class leader, VanCleef stands up and argues, which leads to a fight with her, but she surrenders and calms down. This makes me think that there may be another story for her, or for the Defias, but I'm not really sure. Thanks for all the videos, and have a good day :)
If they had won, they would have been the heroes who overthrew an injust king and his nobles. History is written by the winner.

Thank you Nobbel. Really great videos. I enjoy them immensely!
"MY FATE IS MY OWN" ok cool.....but your loot is Nobbles :D
I love your lore videos - always waiting for the next one! Keep up the good work and thanks for making these so thorough and understandable!
MY FATE IS MY OWN!
-ILLIDAN(HOTS): My fate is my own, demon!
Oh how i wish i could subscribe more than once! I absolutely LOVE your vids, Nobbel!
Waited a long time for this! I "adore" the brotherhood's origin, with the injustice brought upon poor Edwin Vancleef :( thank you Noble Nobbel!
I would rather fight for the brotherhood then the Alliance
wow, you learn about the brotherhood as far back as the quest "report to goldshire" in which if you read the message to marshal dughan, then go to "thieves" you can see that it speak about "A Brotherhood"
Great vid as always! The Defias Brotherhood lives on! ;)
Defias Ringleader
Finally!
Thank you so much, i've always been interested in the Westfall stories and i wanted to know how it all started. Now i know. :)
Edwin VanCleef is like my favourite character period... Westfall was a great zone too
needs an update for legion. shes a follower for rogues
JESUS FUCKING CHRIST, I WAS RIGHT!
SHE SURVIVED!
In Legion, Vanessa Vancleef makes a return in a quest: Honor Among Thieves in the Rogues class hall. I SHIT YOU NOT!
www.wowhead.com/news=250014/patch-7-0-1-legion-beta-build-20740-achievements-class-followers-professions-ico
Look up Vanessa Vancleef, and see she survived!
"Vanessa VanCleef - Class: Rogue, Quest: Honor Among Thieves, Zone: The Hall of Shadows
Most think to this day that the infamous leader of the Defias Brotherhood died in the Deadmines years ago thanks to an elixir that mimiced death and flame retardant armor. In truth, the wayward daughter of Westfall found her way into the secretive order of the Uncrowned, where her anti-government motives were well at home. She quickly rose through the ranks to the mysterious Shadows, poised to finally have the means to enact her revenge."
That's not cool man, no one asked for legion spoilers in this video. It's relevant but totally unexpected. Like me posting Star wars spoilers in an Avengers movie. Totally inconsiderate
scottaification
All things are subject to change. However the fact she returns says enough for me.
Alexander Edward
That's Meatball, and he's a gnoll, but an entirely different character.
Arthas probbaly comes back at some point also
That isn't Arthas is it? I'm pretty sure it's the lich king which at the moment is not Arthas.
1:00 Anduin: "Why is this stick glowing? And why can't I drop it?"
Needs an update, what with Vanessa's return in Legion =P
Also, I wonder if Edward VanCleef is wandering around the Shadowlands somewhere...
great vid :D the memories of this questline lol.. i never really read the lore, much more fun hearing somebody explain it to you imo
Yet again great job! Love the lore videos so much keep it up!
You there, check out that noise!
Sound or tattoo monsters?
The Defias really needs their own xpac.
I really don't believe Vanessa is dead. Her death could have just been in the mind of the heroes under her venom.
She was too well voice acted and fleshed out to just be killed off like that. I'm sure she'll return.
Would love that, the defias have always been in my opinion one of the Alliance's most interesting enemies and I feel more can be done with them.
Codename Boom Naah.. the Defias should stay in Westfall for the level 10 humans ;)
Martin R Well I hope they come up with something new for the alliance to face, everything has been pretty horde centric for a while and I wanna see some turmoil in their side for once. :P If not the Defias then something interesting.
Nobbel I don't comment much but your vids are awesome. Keep up the good work!
i absolutly love this channel
For those interested, the VA for Vanessa Van Cleef, Karen Strassman, has featured on a bunch of anime dubs, including Kallen in Code Geass.
I think it'd be cool if rogues get the Deadmines as a Class Order Hall.
That's some sweet character development for the defias now if only anduin got some of it...
What's incredible is the twist you get with the rogue class hall campaign in Legion.
It's possible that she was 14, Thrall was around 15 when he became the Warchief.
Nobbel87 15? Didn't he escape Durnholde around his 18th birthday?
Nobbel87 This is true. But I just have some trouble making sense of the fact that if she was around 14 years of age, then how does she look like a full grown woman? I guess WoW just has a hard time with time, sometimes... As for Demonist's comment, They don't have those models but they could of easily made a model like that.
Oh, well. Maybe I'm thinking of it too much, hmm? :P
Riften Guard This is obviously a shakedown. Let me in.
long live the defies brotherhood
This is quite tragic. You have my respect, Defias Brotherhood.
I love these videos, I've never had an Alliance character so I know nothing about this side of the lore
This is amazing dude
I personally think the Defias would have been better off if they joined The Horde. I'm sure Thrall would have accepted them.
idk, thrall always wanted peace between the horde and the alliance.
now Garrosh might have used them, but not openly, to take out members of the alliance undercover.
why would a human join horde? why would they join them?
they dont agree with the ideals of the alliance?
Dakota Jones doesn't mean they like horde now.
wMwChannel maybe not all of them, but if someone offered help in taking Stormwind down, they might not care where the help is coming from.
The grey morality of the origin of this enemy is one reason I love Warcraft lore.
vancleef looks badass like the whole pirate bandit sort of look
rewatching this playlist for classic
I love your videos! Thank you for these! x

The whole Defias and Onyxia plotline in the original vanilla game was probably the best story out of them all.
So good videos man!! :)! Keep it up!
very good Video. thank you very much :-)
As a Horde Player I never realy knew what was up with this brotherhood
Possible chance that you could do a lore video on Sylvanas?
If Vanessa killed herself to try to kill the other heroes why did she appear in the rogue class hall in Legion?
Your lores are the best:)
Hi Nobbel, could u make a murloc lore video :D?
How the fuck did a simple fucking rock kill tiffin? its a fucking rock. god forbid this woman from walking into a wall if that rock never happened.

+Connor notyerbidness That's concrete and the back of the head is the softest spot of it. Tiffa got KO by a small pebble that smacked her forehead.
***** the softest spot is the temple. And its entirely possible a second impact on the ground or something finished her off or something. a hit like that could still have caused some brain damage maybe even some brain hemoraging. Didnt neccessarily have to break open her skull like an egg.
Nobbel. You touched on subjects that involved Tirion Fordring. I would love to see a segment focused mainly on him and/or the Argent Dawn/Crusade.
great story - Nobbel, please keep these stories contnuing
Didn't get to play through that part past that crowd of people cheering. Vanessa was a badass!
I love the Van Cleefs so much. I really wanna see Vanessa as an alternate hero for rogue class in Hearthstone.
7 years later and all we got was Scabbs.
@@SuperYtc1 LOL what? What do you mean? What are you talking about here?
As always; excellent!
This was Amazing, Truely enjoyed this.
They were the hard-working people of the Alliance. What did they get for building an entire city? Nothing, they even got slaughtered in the end. And the Alliance dare call the Horde monsters?
You realize a black dragon was manipulating Stormwind, right?
They did the job, and the nobles refused to pay them. No matter who manipulated who, this is still a huge exploitation of the worikng class.
Wlarius let the nether take them for all I care it's a game....if I could kill npc's in my own faction i would lol
Khalil White *cough* gamon *cough*
It's funny how in the new questline, Varian promises to send more troops to pacify the region and not, for example, food and supplies to take care of the root issue.
He would've made a good Warchief.
Amazing story telling!!
i asked it last episode to plzz do the story if kel'thuzad
He is still alive and kicking.... question is... What is he doing?
;)
Dang nobbel I was just going though westfall yesterday and wonders what the defias brotherhood was. You videos are awsome!!!!!
i feel bad for going into the deadmines now >.< they were just hard working ppl who got used and lied to and than later on killed :|
