I'm going to keep playing and teaching music no matter what it takes to make a living through it. I absolutely will not stop. Eventually I will be too good for people to ignore me.

Yep, that's true. The good thins about being in a music institution is that you are forced to practice, but if you really want to be a professional musician and you discipline yourself to learn you can obtain great results.

people who said "oh money its all about the music" is the stupidest thing ever, yes its about the music but making a living is just as important

    • @jonathandpg6115

George Naylor the idea is that the amount isnt important as long as you can live. Obv people will need to live but some are content with the minimum as long as they do what they love

However these days you have to be an entrepreneur and know how to market yourself. Those days are gone that you are just "discovered". So you can perform, you have talent...now what do you do? Do you have a marketing plan - a business plan? Are you going to leave all this to a "manager" and trust they have your best interest at heart? Do you have merch?

When I was in high school (30 years ago) I wanted to be a high school music teacher because I had a joy learning all the facets of music between the ages of say 14-20.
I never got there..........but the teachers at my school are now earning more than $45,000 a year after being at the school for less than 10 years.
For me, the money would be much better than what I'm earning right now...................
but I'd be having a much more meaningful life standing in front of a group of 15-18 year olds trying to teach them how to play
Cappriccio Italian and Romeo and Juliet and Mahler's 9th and................

It's not all about the coursework; a big component of Berklee is the culture and the musical interaction between students. . .

Without Boomers and Gen X'rs buying albums along with the incredibly high price of living today its becoming more hopeless for people to become great artists and survive. Gen Y's and big corporations have killed music's near future and I have a feeling many future generations will look back on the years before 2010 and view it as a golden age in music never to be replicated again.

If you want to get a career in music business, get a business degree. You'll save money and be more marketable. If you want to get a career in performance, find a good private teacher and perform. Think of what you could accomplish with investing $200K in yourself. You could study with basically anyone of your choosing, purchase the best equipment and market yourself and still not even get close to 200K.

I love Boston, and I love the Campus. But the fact of the matter is that I don't have $200,000 to get a degree from Berklee. Besides, I think that the reason for going to a prestigious music college is not that they can teach you more, it's the prestige behind the school. Odds are, you will have a better chance of getting a job going to Berklee than if you got a guitar degree from UNM.

  • @GrassJuice7

  • @JAustinMunn

But in the music world, is not the name on the diploma extremely important?
When you're hiring a session guitarist, would you rather have somebody from UNM or from Berklee College of Music?

  • @camelius

    Dream Theater actually left Berklee......
As I said in another post, a musician is no only made by the school he/she went to, some of the people may be talented, some others not, some of them may have original ideas, some others not.
The same thing happens in any university for any kind of career.
I have a friend that studies in Berklee that is a drummer and he is good, however I've got other friends who had particular classes and then studied on their own and are better.

  • @badgerflux
    @badgerflux 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I wouldnt pay a dime to go to berklee. I've met lots people who attended that school & frankly haven't been impressed all that much. They're to academic & have lost the soul that is the essence of music. Maybe if you're rich and can afford 200 000$ tuition, but I get my education Tin-pan alley style free and I'd say that enviroment is more of an inspiration to me. Surrounded by reality, the nitty gritty of life... No offence. lol

I think a big point to keep in mind is with ANY ARTIST they do what they do because they love it. not for money, not for popularity or fame. If they happen to be able to make a little cash while creating there Art then that is considered gravy. not thought of as anything they expected or think they diverse. I believe that is the idea of art from time of conception. Do not go into this field expecting to be rich and famous. I think that is a big mistake and takes focus away from your Art and creativity.

@spacitydrummer4JC M.I. is not accredited, they have a 90%+ acceptance rate, and you don't get a degree. To my knowledge, their only real successful alum is Paul Gilbert. Berklee has on average 25+ massive success stories for every department. And M.I. isn't too cheap either. Normally I wouldn't mind. People prefer different schools, but before you start dishing out advice you should present the whole story. Just sayin'.

Music careers are built for those snobby rich kids who had parents that took the time to teach them or brought them to music classes. Music is about how you were conditioned. If you weren't conditioned for music before adulthood... say 21 then you shouldn't pursue it. It sucks. I blame my parents for not signing me up for music despite me begging since I was 12.
