What I love about Ed is that he’s not fancy or extra with his process. I see all these prop makers trying to make things look professional and neat by using all these expensive products, and then you have Ed, who’s got decades worth of experience using silicone from a hardware store lol
Hey Everyone! We hope you like Monster Lab 20! Please remember to SHARE, COMMENT, SUBSCRIBE, and LIKE in order to help us continue making this content. Each of those things helps us to be able to make these instructional videos. This is the 3rd video in the 4 part zombie mask and costume series. In the previous videos we showed you how to sculpt and mold your own zombie mask and in the next video we will show you how to zombify the clothes and pull it all together.
This is why so many people love this guy ! Not many mask makers are willing to share their years of knowledge, but obviously Ed likes to teach people and pass on his trade which gives me a warm fuzzy feeling in my heart haha !
i know this is 53:53 minutes long, but honestly? it is just not long enough!! wonderful video and i learn so much thank you and give my best to Miss Marsha
The boss works hard in this episode. Awesome tips and tricks, as always! I found one of those old Post masks that goes on the ears with rubber bands at the flea market for a quarter. :D
I absolutely LOVE your Monster Lab series! its so wonderful that you're sharing your 40+ years of experience of monster making with the public. This series is so inspiring. I wish I had this when I was a kid I may have taking a different approach in my career choices.
Another great Monster Lab Ed & Adam!!! Step by step with amazing detail! You're increasing the monster maker population everywhere! Can't wait to see you again next month for Monster Day 3! Bill & Colby
One last review of the technique before pouring the latex! Thanks for the awesome instruction video... Will try the thicker mask - hoping the ears don't create a problem...
Oh wow! I just bought a fox latex mask for really cheap and wanted to add details to it a more realistic result. One thing I thought I could do is to add fur to the mask. I watched a few tutorials and it involves more expensive tools and binders. This is a thin latex too, so I don't know if I can punch the hair on. This gives me a new idea to work with it. Thank you so much :)
Very informative video! I would love to see how to do latex hands, my hands are large with long fingers and it's hard to find pre-made monster hands that will fit.
this is quite a tremendous improvement over your alien zombie, thing I think, maybe because you are working with something more akin to what we are all used to, so the adage "do what you know"? (since its a human zombie, as opposed to an alien one, which we really don't know what aliens would be like, so as humans we tend to try and push our imaginations, and get it wrong sometimes as far as believability, and sometimes we get it right, so its more a trial and error, but looking at dead decaying things and humans, we see both every day, in some way or another so easier to extrapolate, what you want to make that is believable XD)
Hi ! I have a question to which i can't really find an answer. I've painted my first latex mask like 2 weeks ago using half latex, half acrylic paints and regular paintbrushes because i can't afford an airbrush, but now i've noticed the paint cracked everywhere it possibly could. How can I fix that ? Should I just remove the paint and do it all over again ? I'm really sad about it cause i was very proud of how it looked...
I heard that there’s a method where you do one layer of latex then wait for it to dry then cut strips of burlap and apply one to two layers then let it dry. After that, you add one more layer of latex for comfort and the burlap adds a lot of strength durability.
Hi Ed, just wanted to send a massive thank you from the UK for sharing your knowledge and expertise, you inspired me to have a try at sculpting and pouring my own mask following your instruction, I’m thrilled to say it worked well, however I’ve noticed my unpainted latex masks turning brown, is there a way of preventing this or will I need to use your base coat method to paint them in a flesh colour, your advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance, Steve
Surprised to see silicone being used on the latex. I thought that silicone and latex couldn’t be used together! Cool to hear it works well to bond hair to the mask - maybe it’s the paint layers that it’s bonding to.
Thank you 😊 for sharing Love the creativity artistry and the and result just watching you ! Off topic what kind of spray bottles do you get ??? i make my on cleaning products using Alcohol as the base !!!
I used silicone caulk to adhere hair to a store bought (supposedly latex) mask and it never cured. I then read somewhere that silicone won’t cure on latex… you are clearly not having that problem so I’m curious if that sounds like bologna to you - and also if you suggest using anything else (my thought would be rubber cement). Side note - your work is incredible and these videos are super helpful and inspiring. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Did you mention you can use house paint to use mixed with iso prop and latex but what sort of house paint is it you use oil based paint or emulsion type. Loving your content by the way.
What's the material that you have on the back wall of your spray booth/area (it reminds me of something in a Beksinski painting)? Thank you so much for this series its very helpful, I followed it a few years ago to make some masks and they turned out great!
Hey ed is it safe to use the silcone caulk i heard from other people that its not safe would like to hear youd opinion because ive been using it for alot of my masks
I have seen ppl use rubber cement to put hair on latex mask so is that good too I'm tying to put some hair on a mask for the 4th of July which one do you guys recommend it last minute thing lol ?
Quick question (hopefully the video is not too old), I'm trying to make my own mask, I got the clay sculpture and plan on doing a similar plaster mold. So, instead of having to do a big batch of latex, filling it up and dumping the excess does it work the same to brush layer by layer? or is filling and then dumping what gets best results? My mask has some 3d parts that poke out but not excessively. Thanks!
Hi Grave Riffer! Wishing you the best with your mask from all of us at Distortions. You can brush up the latex layer by layer if you want. On some of our large animatronic and prop molds we spray the latex in with a quart sprayer layer by layer. Let us know how your mask goes.
Great! But remember, when we do the fill up with latex, wait and dump method we save all of the remaining liquid latex and then use it to pour more props. So you can do the same. You can fill up your mold with latex, let it sit for the desired about of time depending on the thinkness you want, and then dump it out in a bucket or container to save it and use it again. We have other methods that we use for large molds where we actually mechanically suck the latex out and back into a tank to use again. Hope that makes sense. But both methods should work for you.
So when I use face latex it will harden/dry. Is Mask Latex different? When you poor it in the bucket how do you store it to keep from drying or hardening? I am all for saving waste if I can use the leftovers! #broke_artist 😆
Do you or did you ever make ceramics? because the fill the mold, then dump the liquid out after the plaster absorbs some water, and then let it dry, is exactly how they make ceramics out of plaster molds LOL
What I love about Ed is that he’s not fancy or extra with his process. I see all these prop makers trying to make things look professional and neat by using all these expensive products, and then you have Ed, who’s got decades worth of experience using silicone from a hardware store lol
Thanks so much for watching Nonpneumatic! Wishing you the best with all your projects.
I love watching the process from beginning to end, its fascinating and so creative. This is absolutely fabulous.

True!
Thank you Ed!
What kind of latex do you use? Would regular liquid latex work good enough or not.
You need to use latex made specifically for masks. Monster Makers sells RD-407 which is for making masks

Do you have a link for the latex you used
What an incredible video
What latex do I use?
awesome
Can you show us a series just like this one but for a full body monster suit?
Yes, in due time!
Check out our list of what clay we use and supplies in the video description. (Amazon Affiliate Links)
Will Mastix work on the lower jaw?
Thank you 😊 for sharing
Love the creativity artistry and the and result just watching you !
Off topic what kind of spray bottles do you get ??? i make my on cleaning products using Alcohol as the base !!!
Oh we just buy whatever is handy.
So after the latex is kn the Mold, the longer I wait pulling out the mask the thicker it gets?
Correct!
Ed Edmunds thanks Ed 🙏🏻

Self portrait?? :)
Maybe it's a dumb question... but could a spray bottle work as well for painting the mask with the latex+acrylic+water formula? Thank you 🙏🏻
Could I also put some flocking in the latex?
"Sophisticated Salt n Pepper" You have coined a whole line of beauty products.
Can you use that mold that you made for other casting materials as well or only silicone? I want to cast with polyurethan.
Is there a difference between rubbing alcohol and isopropyl alcohol?
Did you mention you can use house paint to use mixed with iso prop and latex but what sort of house paint is it you use oil based paint or emulsion type. Loving your content by the way.
Your masks are awesome BUT unfortunately for those of us who have latex allergies they are not really the best. Again you make awesome masks
What's the material that you have on the back wall of your spray booth/area (it reminds me of something in a Beksinski painting)? Thank you so much for this series its very helpful, I followed it a few years ago to make some masks and they turned out great!

I've always wanted to be Frankenstein, that mad scientist guy that dreams of monsters. And I will be
Both the links are broken to the pottery plaster and the web clay that you posted in the video description.
I have seen ppl use rubber cement to put hair on latex mask so is that good too I'm tying to put some hair on a mask for the 4th of July which one do you guys recommend it last minute thing lol ?
Any advice? I did all of this and a lot of the paint stuck to my plaster!! I'm going to try casting it anyway but hoping it doesn't cause me problems.
Did Ed just build Ed?
If there was a casting for a zombie wall of diseased death, the back of that spray booth would be perfect.
What Latex do you use or reccomend using?
See second comment!
where do i buy this liquid latex?

@@DistortionsUnlimited That's a relief! As I'm on a budget I wasn't too keen on wasting latex, thanks for the quick reply and will do!

@@DistortionsUnlimitedthe links to the WEB clay and the pottery plaster that you've posted underneath this video are not working.
Usted es que ase toda esas cosas de terror si es usted mis respecto
Please, please, can we see next how to make a horned mask?
u could also advise to ware a mask when making this mask i mean a mask to protect there self from pretential bad particles.
Yes, wearing a protective mask when painting and working with harmful materials is a very good idea.
So when I use face latex it will harden/dry. Is Mask Latex different? When you poor it in the bucket how do you store it to keep from drying or hardening? I am all for saving waste if I can use the leftovers! #broke_artist 😆
I miss the show.
