That rubbing alcohol wipe out step is incredible! The detail that immediately jumps out is really surprising for a guy like me who has never been involved in this industry
Re-watched these videos and listened to them in the background at least 5 times there's something so relaxing and interesting watching these behind the scenes tutorials and making monsters.
I want to thank you for having all this content available! I just made my first latex mask by following these instructional videos just in time for Halloween. Thank you Ed!
This video takes me back to my college and early post college years. I actually learned this process as a fiberglass tech in the art department of an amusement "theme" park - King's Dominion. Our process was slightly different since the final object (singing mushroom, Scooby Doo, Yogi Bear, giant 6 foot candy apple, what ever) was made of fiberglass and rigid, so the mold itself had to be made in latex. The original was sculpted in clay; the latex was built up in layers, just as you did with the plaster, but then canvas reinforced plaster (like working fiberglass) was laid over the outside of the latex blob. The plaster acted as support for the latex reverse mold when laying up the fiberglass. Curing fiberglass generates quite a bit of heat, so we always sprayed the plaster support interior with vegetable oil to keep it from sticking to the latex. Once the polyester had hardened the latex could be peeled out of the fine detail of the "part". I remember in particular a classic Roman lion's face with stylized hair for his mane. It was a brute to get all the polyester into the intricate detail of the hair and even more brutal to peel the latex from the part once it was cured. If you damaged the latex mold, you could recast it from an existing part or if you were really careful with peeling the latex from the original clay sculpt, you could recast from that.
Hey Ed great work. My whole office loved watching your show. Not just great sculpts but tere was great production artwork as well. Love your stuff. You are always inspiring.
What a journey this mask tutorial was for me. Thank you so much. I will forever remember you as the one who taught me. Can't wait to share what I create with you!! 🎃
Wonderful! Thanks so much for the message and the kind words. Wishing you all the best on your projects and let us know how it goes. Hello from the Distortions crew!
I really do find these videos to be interesting, cool and informative. ^-^ Ed is such a nice and calming person, so I enjoy listening and watching him. The talent that everyone has on Distorted Unlimited is outstanding.
I went through the entire process. It was not monotonous at all but very jovial & informative teaching. I love to learn more from your videos. God bless you.
We hope you enjoy the latest episode of Monster Lab! Remember to check out other Monster Lab videos for Sculpting, Mold making, and other monster creation tips.
I hope the final Halloween mask episode is not the end of the tutorials, they may be few and far between but they are still excellent. I particularly like the sculpture tips ones. keep up the marvelous work.
That's the awesomest channel I've subscribed to in a while ! Thank you for making this type of content that is well shot as it is well explained, I really needed this !
I thoroughly enjoy watching these you definitely need to produce more of these, because I have watched every video you have more than once. big fan though you guys do incredible work.
Cara, eu admiro seu trabalho e gostaria de ter a sorte de passar um dia com você e aprender mais de perto. Sou grata por nos apresentar a sua arte! Parabéns!
Love this series, found them today and started at 9-12. Gonna check out the earlier vids. BTW, when you attached the white hair, the mask looked like a zombie Andorian :D
Cool! I'm a novice in the mask making genre. I do have a question..? Do the paint that you use infused with latex rubber? Does the paint have to be a certain type in order to work on a rubber mask. I've been making these sock masks from a Morph as the base and hand painting it with paint brushes. I use simple colored craft paint but mix it with a little latex rubber. If there a paint that can use straight out a bottle or can?
Beautiful video compliments .. i have some questions .. what kind of paint do you use for latex? Of what alcohol did it? And what aerograph do you use? With needle how big? thank you so much
@DistortionsUnlimited How did you extract the clay antenna from the mold? I think it would have been helpful to see the more tricky parts in extracting the clay. I would think that since the antenna are cylindrical offshoots from the head, and with their varied dimensions, that it would have been pretty tricky getting them out of the mold? I look forward to your response. Thank you.
i love the show so much watching these make me super happy i have been in the haunted house industry for going on 6 years now and its such a passion if you are hiring for Welders, let me know! Please and thank you! totally down to move out there
thanx so much edd.been waiting for this like christmas...can I ask you when making a 2 part mould can I use olive oil cooking spray or vaseline for a mould release around the wall.also in the uk we dont have krylon spray paint but we have a plastikote crystal clear spray, will that do to spray the sculpt before making a plaster mould...thanx so much and enjoy your christmas.
Ed Edmunds this Ed is fake not the real one he spells way to bad to be the EPIC! EPICNES known Ed Edmunds but if this Ed is real I'm sorry I'm not worthy !!!
Hey Ed I know I could simply message you on Facebook about this but it might also help others as well so here's the question after painting the mask or appliance there are times when it looks glossy and if your painting old bone or anything that should look glossy what's the best way to eliminate that gloss
these videos are great thank you for making them! when I was little my aunt, who was Elmo in sesame street live, took me into a mask shop/ lab in sarasota or sebring florida (not quite sure) they also had foam things and i remember i thought it smelled awful in there but I didnt want to leave. I mention that place so often wishing i could go back and then i thought.... maybe i could try making them since i was so amazed by it and still think about it after all these years! still want to take my kids to see a place like that but maybe they can watch me try to do it until i find one :)
Thats an amazing story! Yes you should try to make masks, im sure it would bring back all sorts of memories. The smell of clay, latex, plaster, and paint certainly do that!
In the process of cleaning out my mold of all the excess clay and impurities... Everything came out great, but most of the spray paint layer stuck to the inside of my mold. This is probably because i used an oil based clay so it didn't stick to all the way. I also made the mold out of Ultracal.. Any suggestions for what to use to clean the enamel? I'm thinking of scrubbing it down with a solvent, but don't want to make a liquid mess or hurt the mold. Appreciate it!
You should try to wait for a couple of hours with a fan or overnight without, so that the paint is very dry before casting. Try a brush with acetone in a small spot to see how that works.
Mask making is something I've always wanted to try since I was a little boy, but never tried it with the feeling I'd be no good at it haha. But enjoy watching this sort of thing nonetheless. This whole series has been very entertaining and weirdly relaxing haha.
Hi Sir Ed, nice I never seen before the way you explain things. You look like you really enjoy what you do. I like that , not soooo serious.. lolhaha. I watching you alot more. Not just for Halloween

where could I get fw inc ?
DistortionsUnlimited u can even use flour
Hobby lobby or similar
when you say fw ink what type of ink do you mean? i have their inks but they're liquid acrylics basically
What about adding talcom before pouring latex so latex doesn't stick to plaster?
I must applaud your craftsmanship.
I can see you're putting even more time into your videos now and I can't wait to see what you do next!
Thanks for sharing Ed!
You are a true master of your art.

Ed is a hero

Great questions! Please check out our earlier videos where we cover those questions in detail. th-cam.com/video/te6lwLpGioo/w-d-xo.html
no comments. ultra amazing excellent tutorial, thank you!
Cool tips. I must have missed something or did not hear, with latex to the mold...is it not required to use a mold release?
No mold release is necessary!
Ok so that would mean the spray paint acts like a mold release...
@DistortionsUnlimited
How did you extract the clay antenna from the mold? I think it would have been helpful to see the more tricky parts in extracting the clay. I would think that since the antenna are cylindrical offshoots from the head, and with their varied dimensions, that it would have been pretty tricky getting them out of the mold? I usually dig a hole and fold the sides into the opening. If your still having trouble, an air hose or a waterpik can do the trick.
Cool video! will FW Inks stay permanent on the mask without sealing the whole mask? Thanks!!
They will, however it is really good to spray the mask with krylon crystal clear flat before glossing.
Awesome. Thanks for the fun tutorial.
11:41 when you're parents leave you home alone.

You're means "you are."
Lol
Your videos really show a wanna be mask maker how to do it.
Thanks so much Brett! We appreciate the kind words and best wishes with mask making and let us know how it goes.
i love the show so much watching these make me super happy
i have been in the haunted house industry for going on 6 years now
and its such a passion
if you are hiring for Welders, let me know! Please and thank you!
totally down to move out there
What type of prop controler have you guys been using
Can I ask what kind of silicone you used to adhere the hair ........ I could not get silicone to stick to latex very well at all
100% silicon clear.
This is really cool, but why use rubbing alcohol? Does it set better?
It is an incompatible medium so it doesn't interfere with the latex paint, and it acts as it's own solvent when dry.
thanx so much edd.been waiting for this like christmas...can I ask you when making a 2 part mould can I use olive oil cooking spray or vaseline for a mould release around the wall.also in the uk we dont have krylon spray paint but we have a plastikote crystal clear spray, will that do to spray the sculpt before making a plaster mould...thanx so much and enjoy your christmas.
Hi! Vaseline works. Plastikote may be to thick and mess with your details. Any gloss spay paint should work.
Ed Edmunds this Ed is fake not the real one he spells way to bad to be the EPIC! EPICNES known Ed Edmunds but if this Ed is real I'm sorry I'm not worthy !!!
NEVER use oil with latex. Latex hates oil and will "rot" like crazy.
Ha! It is me, and I do spell bad!
These videos on masks and mold were really interesting, but i didn't get what kind of paint do you use, mixed with rubbing alcool. Is it acrylic ?
Hi Rev! Check out some of our earlier videos for complete explanation. th-cam.com/video/te6lwLpGioo/w-d-xo.html
Fantastic videos! Maybe you mentioned it and I missed it, but what type paint are you using on the latex?
You're like the Bob Ross of horror. I thoroughly enjoyed that and I wasn't even looking to watch a video on mask making.
Hey Ed I know I could simply message you on Facebook about this but it might also help others as well so here's the question after painting the mask or appliance there are times when it looks glossy and if your painting old bone or anything that should look glossy what's the best way to eliminate that gloss

Thats an amazing story! Yes you should try to make masks, im sure it would bring back all sorts of memories. The smell of clay, latex, plaster, and paint certainly do that!
This is awesome. I want to make a Tick mask, but don't have the tools or space tp make one.
Great series by the way

Alien zombie with blond hair. Love it!

so why do you use alcohol with the inks? as opposed to just water for example
The alcohol acts like a solvent no mater how dry. when water based stuff dries it done.
What type paint do you use ? Please do a video on that
Here is a video we did on Paint. Thanks so much for watching the series! th-cam.com/video/te6lwLpGioo/w-d-xo.html
DistortionsUnlimited thank you so much I've recently started making latex mask and ur videos help me so much
DistortionsUnlimited thank you so very much

19:12 there's a picture there but it goes to fast hmmm..
is awesome your mask's and sculping lml ♡
WAU, amazing!
As I am a lover of all makeup, I wanted to know if you can help me with making movable demon wings, about 12ft?
This is great!!!
Will the acrylic ink flex crack? Had this issue with acrylic paint
Is the paint you sponge off the same as the bottom layer?
How do you save the left over latex? Isn't it partially cured and useless?
It's thrown away.
Wow, that seems pretty expensive.
4:17 that spider scared the shit out of me
Hi Sir Ed, nice I never seen before the way you explain things. You look like you really enjoy what you do. I like that , not soooo serious.. lolhaha. I watching you alot more. Not just for Halloween
Thank you so much for your kind words and all of your support! We appreciate you taking the time.
