I grew up in the 1980s in the US, so there was a lot of racism against East Asians at that time. People would mock the way Chinese people would talk, they would say racist things like the C word, and w people wouldn't want to be my friend.
As a result, most East Asian people that grew up around that time would just hang around with other Asians. Chinese people would hang around with other Chinese people, Koreans, etc. Vietnamese people would hang around with other Vietnamese. East Indians would hang around with other South Asians. People from Southeast Asia would hang around with other people from Southeast Asia.
I don't think the US was ever a melting pot. People would pretty much divide themselves based on their place of origin.
Being a East Asian person, I did experience some of this racism at the work place. It was mostly micro aggression, or they would make jokes about Asian people.
I really don't care if those people say stuff about Asian people, I don't really care about those people, nor would I waste any of my time on them.

Just to let you know that there's no such country called East India therefore the term "East Indians" doesn't make any sense and is null and void. They're called Indians or South Asians if you prefer.

I grew up in the US in the 80's too. I think it does vary about being a melting pot though. But I can see some areas being more racist or diverse than others. I grew up with close friends being mostly white and hispanic, although I did have Asian friends (and Chinese and Vietnamese were probably a majority). I just mean my core friend group just happened to be white and hispanic. But really, I didn't see color as a child.
Being Japanese American, I didn't really have any close JA friends until I joined the Boy Scouts at a Buddhist Temple and other youth activities, but this was closer to High School.

As a child growing up in the ‘70’s being born & raised in a non-Asian community, it was rough. I lived in a predominantly Caucasian/Hispanic neighborhood & attended private school in a black/Hispanic neighborhood. Trust me, the other minority children would pick on me & call me the c word. It’s all ignorance. Children are taught to be racist, they’re not born that way. I don’t mind racial jokes if everyone is equally made fun of. And nobody is exempt.

Right? Race humour can be really funny if we point out the funny intricacies of various races, ethnic groups and cultures that we find out of the ordinary/odd/weird/ridiculous, but only if done equally to all groups. The moment you make exceptions and focus on a particular group, then I think that crosses the line and is at the very least, border line racist. DC Chinatown existed along Pennsylvania Avenue because that is where white American wanted them to be AND DC Chinatown was destroyed and moved to H and 7th Street when white Americans decided that they didn't want Chinese Americans there. Anti Chinese sentiment in the Washington DC area was widespread and seriously bad until about 1985. Much of this is due to China/PRC becoming a big financial hub. Historically, after the Irish immigrants established themselves in America at around 1850-1880, many became went along with supporters of white racism and went against working class people of color along with going against working class Chinese descent people. Before 2000, American racist humor is very common, as the audience became less white and more multiracial and multicultural - racist humor became less in demand. Today racist comedy is pretty much dying art form with a limited future. It is pretty easy to do racist shock comedy....if you know the art of linguistic irony and surprise. Hate humor is the lowest form of comedy... creating a social bond by sharing fear and hate.

And so had comedy going forth from the Ancient Era to Medieval times to the Modern Era up into the current century. So instead of taking one’s personal opinion and make it sound like an objective statement of facts, especially when the facts don’t support the statement, it might be a better approach to just say that one personally does not like offensive comedy.

Let’s not dignify what he said as jokes. Slinging slurs without any clever buildup to a well-written punchline is just lazy and doesn’t qualify as jokes. Meanwhile, he gets triggered by jokes about Down's syndrome, which is understandable. But he shouldn’t dish it if he can’t take it. It's true too that only certain slurs carry societal weight. If Asian Americans had more of a reputation of fighting back, the C word wouldn't be thrown around like it is. Are slurs as bad as physical violence? Not at all. But it can lead down that path because it plays a part in dehumanizing a group. If you can dehumanize, you can more easily justify bad treatment of a group. All that said, I don't care whether he's canceled or whether he apologizes. In the end, I personally won't support any of his work but I don't demand the rest of the world to follow suit. It's up to each individual to do what they want. Aoki is probably mad that this guy is bouncing back and getting paid again. I get it, but sometimes assholes win. That's life. Life ain't always fair.
