Cinematic Color Grading (Movie Look Effect) - Photoshop Tutorial

- Photoshop CC tutorial showing how to apply the cinematic effect to your photographs. The cinematic effect that we're going for is the teal-orange look, which is a typical movie effect in action movies.
This effect gives the dark shades of your image a cool teal tone, while the light shades take a warm orange look. This makes the actor stand out since the colors are complementary and creates a "pop"when put side by side.
It is a good idea to do a color correction on your image, so you that it has neutral grays and no color cast.
Here's my tutorial on color correction in case you need some help with that

This is by far the best tut on color grading that I ever watched. The comparison methods section really brought out the differences you can get. That, along with the color wheel section, really elevates the quality level. I also appreciate the quick explanation on how to remove a color cast. Jesus, I've watched a few of your tutorials and without doubt feel you are a terrific instructor. Thank you for this wonderful tutorial. I'll be watching it several times to get everything to sink in.
Thank you so much, Mark! I really appreciate your comments! :)

You are a terrific teacher. Concise and conscientious. You leave nothing out, and teach what you know very well in a language that pros and noobs can equally understand at the same time. Amazing!
Rizandro Napone Thank you!
First, this is a great tutorial for anyone needing to learn more powerful use of curves, adjustment layers, and blend modes, even if you don't want the film look.
Second, your tutorial just proved the old saying that there's always three ways to accomplish any one thing in Photoshop. :)
Mike Keller There's always three ways of accomplishing anything, and probably three other ways we don't know about!
Wow, I been watching tutorial all my life, but this one was the BEST ever, congrats and you just got a new FAN !.

This is what I call an excellent tutorial, you explain not only the "how" but the "why" which is pretty rare to find on these type of tutorials. Thank you!
Gilberto Vizcarra Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I agree with Li Yong, thanks for teaching the "why" as well as the "how." I've watched a few youtubes on color grading and yours has been the most helpful

Hi, I just found your channel accidentally after following a link to this video, showing at another website. I must say you have a really extended knowledge about your field of expertise, because you don't only know how, but also why. You showed us 3 ways of doing something, but you also tell us why you prefer one way above another (and why we should too). Your tutorials also thorough, you're not assuming that all your viewers are expert at photoshop. I really learn so much of the basics you presented here at the video, because I did use the adjustment layer before, but I never really knew how to use it properly, and even if this video content is just to only show that I can change the luminosity using layer adjustment and not affecting the color, or vice versa, that was a whole new world of knowledge to me. Never knew I can do that, and never knew that I need that technique, until you showed me. Thank you for your patience to put up these undisputely quality photoshop tutorials, and I hope success for your future. Subscribed! Cheers!
Li Yong Chen Thanks for your comment! I really appreciate it and I'm glad you learned from my video! And I'm glad you accidentally clicked on that link!
Something I was struggling (and was unable) to achieve for years.

Probably one of the best tutorials I've ever seen. So much information and value. Everything is explained very well making it easy to follow you. And yet, it didn't get boring not even once. Skipping forward didn't even cross my mind, and that's a huge accomplishment. Well done mate.

This is the first video I've watched of yours. Your video taught me more than any other video on the web. I really appreciate how you explain the theory of it rather than just showing the steps to achieve an effect. That's why I'm subbing you. Thanks so much, and keep up the great work!

Thanks for being so careful explaining the details and why, while keeping a good pace. Great tutorial! Made my day.
Nate McLean Oh, and what are your thoughts on just using Color Finess in AE instead of speedgrade? Seems like the speedgrade workflow is a little "Beta" and AE has way better masking, and specificity...
THanks much!
Nate McLean Yeah, Speedgrade is brand new, so it's got a few kinks. I would say use whatever works for you now.
I love your tutorials , simple and clear.
