#31 - Can We SAVE These Old Antique Floorboards | Our Stone Restoration Project in Central Portugal

- From one floor to another... After levelling the floor downstairs last week, Michael starts lifting up the floorboards on the first floor to start replacing the joists. But due to their age, some rot and the fact they interlock, will he be able to do it so we can re-use them in the future?
As always, the pets join in and we finally get to enjoy a bit of sunshine again!
Thanks so much for watching, liking, and commenting!

Probably a good idea to get help with the floorboards, also remove the new beams to reduce the floor weight will help. Brace the old beams and go forward, cut in half if necessary, looks like most of them are no good.
Thank you 😊
I work with leather so if you want some replacement pieces for when you put the trap door back just let me know and I'll send you some. I have plenty of offcuts so its no bother :)
Oh that's so kind of you! Thanks so much 😊 we're hoping to put it back so I'll let you know 💛
Interesting, those old floor joists literally are trees sawn on either side, they sure used what they had back in the day. My shoulder is killing me today after whacking our weeds yesterday!
They definitely did! I'm sure they were probably growing around here 😅 hope you've rested your shoulder today!! 💛
Always use a hacksaw blade without the bracket with a piece of tape so you don’t cut your hand
🔥🔥🔥♥️😊🇧🇪
😊💛🇵🇹
You have to treat the wood against the woodworm if you want to reuse it.
Definitely! It needs a lot of TLC 😊
i believe you described joint called shiplap in america.
Oh amazing! Thank you 😊
Thank you very much 👍👍👍God bless you 🙏
🐆🐅🐹🐹
Muito obrigada 💛💛 Estamos felizes por podermos usar muitos deles porque vão ajudar a manter a história da casa. Bom fim de semana 🥰🇵🇹💛
you could also use hydraulic car jack from underneath, works very well
Oh interesting! I'll pass that on to Michael 😊 thank you!
sort of works. this technique will require something to spread the load against the floorboard.
Job well done 😊
Thank you!! 😀
I am glad that you are looking and working on every detail at the buildings and the land👏🏘️🏞️
Thank you 😍
use safety glassen something catch yer eyes could go blind when yer cut yer grass
Thank you 😊
great effort in any event❤
Thanks so much 💛
Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love and bless you guys, good work.
Thanks so much 😊💛💛💛
Bravo
Thank you 😊
I would not try to save any of those floorboards too much moisture in that space,
We'll try 🤞🏼
I probably missed this from an earlier episode but what are you going to do with the internal walls?
The ones we removed or the stone ones? The wooden planks we removed from the internals will be reused somehow (doors hopefully) and most of the stone will be exposed (again...hopefully!) 😊
@@PortugalonaPostcard Yep the schist - will look fantastic
😊
you need bolster chisel
Fab. Thank you! 😊
Can I ask what breed your cat is?
Im assuming Maine Coon given how un-cat like and friendly it is... Im not a cat person and have a since childhood phobia/dislike of normal cats except the Maine Coon which for some reason I am very friendly toward. (not that I would ever hurt or tolerate anyone else hurting a cat)
She's not a pedigree (or whatever the equivalent is in the cat world!) she's just classed as a tortoiseshell. Tortoiseshells are renowned for being feisty which she definitely can be so don't be fooled 🤣
@@PortugalonaPostcard lol thanks for taking the time to reply 👍
Why don’t you leave the boards in place? Treat them with xilophene and sand and varnish, don’t complicate things. You can panelling the wall with other wood.
I think perhaps the joists need to be renewed
You're right. We do need to replace the joists unfortunately 😫
you've started on the wrong side.
Question for you: do you know why no one in Portugal uses push mowers? It seems like for those large grassy areas a push mower would be far easier to keep the grass cut down...
I think it’s because of the unevenness of the land strimming is easier
There are a few hidden thorns etc in the land so strimming is easier. But the nice flat land would maybe take a sturdy lawnmower in the future hopefully!! 😊
