    I have only a smattering of Swedish in my vocabulary, but I think the announcement said: _"Dear passengers, we're very sorry the train stopped due to electrical overload. The tourist with the skateboard and video camera who locked the toilet and banged on the tap switches many times in quick succession has short circuited our AC motors. We will slowy crawl into Malmo. No one will be allowed to use the toilets from now, so we're sad for our incontinent passengers, who'll have to cross their legs. Thus we strongly advise elderly passengers to refrain from drinking any more coffee."_

    8:07 the reason they're small is because its not the same demand as in Germany or France. Same here in Norway, our intercity trains go only 210 kmh and have only 4 coaches. There's not a lot of big cities, most of the time only one big city and lots of small cities, so that explains the demand. Not that there's a low demand its just that Scandinavia doesn't have these megacities with lots of people, and as I said often only one pretty big city as the capital.

    So the message reads something like this:
    The train has been diverted in to Malmö instead of Copenhagen. (reason unclear, couldn't hear the whole message.)
    (What is not said is that it will terminate at the above ground terminal and not go through the tunnel under the city)
    And that they are waiting for a slot to enter the upper level at Malmö Central.
    They also said they will proceed at a reduced speed due to local trains ahead.
    They added that the bistro has reopened, that train crew will be there to help passengers continuing too Copenhagen with new transfer tickets and any other question, and that everybody gets complimentary coffee and a snack.

      This happens a lot. (Three of our seven trips I’ve made in 2019/20). Only some of the SJ X2000 fleet are equipped to cross the bridge into Denmark, and the wrong sets often get rostered onto services to/from Copenhagen. In these circumstances, passengers for Denmark have to change in Malmö, usually on the low level but sometimes from high level platforms to low level platforms.

That's also why he mentions the UK calls that High speed, those trains all run on classic track around since the mid-19th century.

    The train was not damaged, couldn't hear the whole announcement but for any reason the train had missed it's slot into Lund C and therefore had to wait to get in. This led to further delay and forced the train to crawl behind slower trains into Malmö C. The passage between Lund and Malmö is currently undergoing major works and will be upgraded to 4-track and because of this, it's very congested. Now it's only 2 track divided by regional, local and cargo trains.

      In fact, smaller Swedish train stations have their own beauty as well. This might sound weird but I dislike o be places with a lot of people, for exempel TC(Stockholm central). So it is usually more relaxing when waiting trains at stations in some smaller city.
      I've been in Katrineholm station, not so little but not too big, just "lagom". It was during the summer with pure blue sky, my train to Hallsberg was delayed, however I didn't mind taking a small walk around the area, and even grabbed a cup of coffee nearby. That was definitely one of the best "train waiting" experienced ever haha... Despite the delay.

They did a reasonably good job with the modern extensions too for the bus terminal, it doesn't take away from the original architecture like is the case in many other places. Coming from Manchester in the UK I was quite surprised at how small it is for the size of the city, which is around the same as Manchester incidentally. I'll be there again this summer so might make my way to Malmo if my friend is up for it.

      Frankly as long as the train journey is around 3 to 4 hours, there isn't a need to go faster. Trains going 300 kilometers per hour costs twice as much as a train going 200 kilometers per hour. New tracks have to be built which costs more and more as the speed increases. Trains worldwide do very well competing against the airlines at around 3 hours. 6:43 China wasn't forced to sell it back to SJ. The X2000 sat vacant in yards for years (by 2006 the X2000 was not much faster than electric locos in China, nor "futuristic", plus the 300km/h CRH trains already in the works. So it was passed from Guangzhou to Chengdu. Due to the 2008 earth quake, Chengdu have to rebuild most of their systems making a tilting train like X2000 unnecessary. Hearing this SJ went to China and bought back the trainset due to shortage of sets in Sweden, but still had to scrap the power cars due to their poor condition, the rest of the cars were refurbished and returned to service.

    As a dutch guy living in Sweden, I LOVE to travel on the X2000. The comfort level is just outstanding, 1st class has wider seats with electric reclining, and they are also spaced wider apart. Excellent breakfast included in 1st class on mornings, you feel like you're on a business class airplane! The onboard Wifi is very good too, I've used it many times from Teams meetings while working on the train. The prices on the bistro car are very reasonable, as are the ticket prices, especially if you book early. Adding to the good experience is the mostly low passenger noise level. As for the speed, with the current tracks real high speed is never going to happen in Sweden. I've read that the number of track sections that allow higher speed (235km/hr) are so limited that it isn't worthwhile to design a transit for it. Due to the soil consisting mostly of rock, construction work in Sweden is much more expensive than say Germany or France, so "proper" high speed trains is probably never going to happen.

      The Swedes being "resourceful" and keeping old stuff is also the reason why these railway lines were never replaced by straighter lines that could have handled, e.g., 360 km/h.
      For a nation with a small population spread out in a large country, it was deemed more economical to keep the existing tracks, originally built for 130-160 km/h, but put the money in the tilting technology instead, which without doubt makes maintenance of the trains expensive.
      It's been a very successful strategy, if you ask me. It allowed the railways to attract more passengers by not increasing the fares.

    I was working for Amtrak out of Washington in on-board service when the X2000 and an ICE train set were tested on the Northeast Corridor in the early 1990's. I did some internal photography for Amtrak in those years, and got to ride both train sets doing photography for use within Amtrak, usually for company newsletters. Rode the head ends of both train sets (well the cab control end of the X2000). Compared to Amtrak Amfleet, the X2000 was much smaller. Really, Amtrak was not looking to buy either train set directly, they were testing them to get ideas for the design of what became Acela. The final design of Acela did incorporate tilt technology similar to the X2000. The 1994 Amtrak calendar featured both the X2000, ICE train set, and a then-new GE P40 locomotive in Washington Union Station side-by-side (a last minute substitution for the intended watercolor painting of the "Sunset Ltd.", because it had recently been involved in the Alabama swamp wreck).

Swedish meatball (AEM7) and Amfleet coaches maintained Acela schedules with no problem. Train crews hate Acela Express like the plague.

    2:10 you can sometimes trick the system by booking a ticket to a less popular destination than the one you're going to. Can't think of a good example right now but say you want to travel from station A to station C, and C is where most passengers is heading. But then there's station D which isn't as popular, so check the price for traveling from A to D, and just get off at station C :)

    Some or all of the early nineties testing of an X2000 in the U.S. was about assigning the set to regularly scheduled services. I didn't have time to ride it, but got some nice photos of it in service through the station at Port Chester, N.Y., which has a nice curve for photos just east of the station. I found the ICE set a less elegant design, so didn't pursue it as thoroughly. The big deal for the U.S. was not so much the equipment as finally getting the wires up all the way to Boston. Thanks for chance to see X2000 at home.

    The Countrylink power car was not a UK Class 43 Diesel, it was an XPT power car purpose design and built in NSW by Comeng for the NSW railways. It used the Brush electric from the British HST, but a more powerful Paxman motor the HST used. You may note from the photo it is larger than the Brit loco, as NSW has a much larger loading gauge. It is to be replced in the next couple of years by a Spanish car set, doubtless to an inferior spec because of the penny pinching government we have in NSW.

    200km/h was high speed in the 60-70s. The first HSR in the world, Japans first shinkansen, only operated up to 210km/h. So in the mid-70s for Britain to call its brand new "fast" train that could do 200km/h on Victorian track and without electrification the HST wasn't an overstatement. Ultimately though people don't consider it high-speed anyway. It entered service not as the "High-Speed Train" but as Intercity 125. Britain has since developed and planned real HSR while also creating a replacement for the 125. This replacement was not called "the new HST", rather the Intercity Express (which doesn't mean high-speed, no matter what DB wants you to think)

    The X2 is a really nice train set, both from a driver and a passenger PoV, it's a bit of a slouch, compared to the Regina X55/SJ3000, and it's electrical equipment is extremely sensitive, but aside from that, it's a really enjoyable experience, with very high levels of comfort.
    Fun fact, the X2 is legally a multiple unit, even though it's technically a loco with coaches, with a driving trailer in the other end. Multiple units had significantly lower fees than locos, so they installed a 1x1 m "cargo space", in the loco, to fit the Swedish legal definition of a multiple unit.

    I recall that Amtrak arranged an X2000 appearance at the Steamtown National Historic Site, a rail/train museum, in Scranton Pennsylvania during the 90s. Given its tilting functionality, it was billed as a potential equipment choice for a long proposed yet never realized rail service from New York City to Scranton, 120 miles northwest, which in part involves many curves through the Pocono Mountains. This same route achieved (fictional) nazi rocket train service from New York City to the Poconos, in the Amazon Prime series, “The Man in the High Castle” - but the tracks met an explosive demise in the last episode. :-)

Australia doesn't do high speed, though our local Geelong line is capable of 160 km/h, but very rare. The X2000 eventually returned to Sweden. • @PixelShade

      I think the biggest problem in southern Sweden is the high demand on train commute and the narrow rail infrastructure. (there's just not a lot of tracks available), Once a train goes out sync with the schedule it can mess up the rail traffic and you get stuck at stations (where there are far more tracks for trains to "rest") There has been a lot of rail construction work lately to increase capacity. So I think the problem is very obvious right now, but it will become much better once the construction is complete.

    • @TalesOfWar
      @TalesOfWar 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PixelShade You get this issue in the UK too as the network is essentially full. The difference here though is these inter-city high speed trains get priority of the line, which has a knock on effect on the local and freight traffic rather than the fast trains. This is why we're building a new dedicated high speed line (HS2), so get these fast trains on their own track so they don't interrupt local and freight services. Sadly it's being chipped away at bit by bit by government because they don't want to spend the money, which is already there and accounted for, but politics doesn't seem to care about reality if it means more votes.

  • @oskarjarlemark302
    @oskarjarlemark302 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, 200 km/h isnt much to brag about nowdays when many high speed trains are capable of doing more than that. According to the UIC a "Highspeed" train is considered highspeed if its capable of 250 km/h on new track or 200 km/h on older track. The X2 and X55 runs on older track, curvy track. Thats why the X2 got a tilt mechanism. Both of theese high-speed alternatives do have the same top speed as many Swedish commuter trains. It might be helpfull to wiev wiev the X2 and X55 as express trains. If you have time i would recomend a ride on the X55. It is slightly slower since its lacks tilt, but its very comfortable.

    That it broke down is no surprise but just par for the course. I commuted on the x2000 for 12 years and whilst it was good to begin with, underfunding and lack of maintenance made it totally unreliable. Normal complaints were that the automatic doors wouldnt open, toilets blocked and closed off, suspension bust so no tipping, heating or AC broken etc etc. Definately running on fumes and time to be replaced. Experienced travellers had a survival kit with them in expectation of having to sit and wait on a feeezing train for several hours waiting to be rescued. So I'm afraid this is not a representative review of what was once a good and modern train service.
