Vocaloid is the only genre(?) of music where there's such a vast amount of horror-esque, dark and highly disturbing songs that's not only good in quality, but as a whole are super engaging or meaningful. MARETU, Kikuo, Masa, Steampianist, Ghost, just to name a few producers. Even individual songs like Bacterial Contamination, Alice Human Sacrifice, Okaasan and more are truly horrifying. I don't think I know any band or artist that scared me more than Vocaloid songs, it's cool to be in this community really.

Mind Brand is an interesting song to me because both parties (the guy and the girl) are blamed for an unwanted pregnancy when usually its either one or the other getting blamed. Either the girl is a slut or the guy is useless. Mind Brand acknowledges that both have to live with the consequences of their actions and that stuff just goes sideways in life.

So his music, that sounded so angry, the lyrics were so honest like someone just spewing out their feelings in their diary, helped me express my anger through his music. I felt FREEDOM in those very short, 10 minutes of break i had back then. of course, i do it in a healthier way now ^^ but from time to time i turn on his more metal songs and rock it out in my room to release some tension. gotta love that man's brilliance!

    We have:
White Happy. A song that has been theorized it's meaning for ages. The main meaning people have taken from this song is that a girl who is so depressed to the point where she want's someone to love her, by force. "Come and take my first place prize" "Come on and take it all away" these lyrics are telling us she wants a boy to take her virginity because she's just so done with the world.
Rebirth. A song where a boy dies and gets rebirthed into a girl and suffers. Then the ghost of the boy is telling his rebirthed self it's not her fault for all of the pain she's been through.
The cause of this, has also been speculated. Where one meaning is their mother wanted a perfect child and kept trying, the pressure put onto those children leads them to their demise.
Which is a good reason why "Its Not Your Fault" ("Probably") feels so deep to me.
Mind Brand. I have a good understanding of what this song means. As, I've listened to it like 50 times just to figure out a true meaning to the song.
This song is about a woman, considered a slut for her skimpy clothing and getting knocked up by men all the time. The song changes it's point of veiw many times.
"Mirror mirror on the wall when's it coming can't recall" "Picture perfect pandering I'll grab them all and see them all in hell" "I'll drag them as we crawl"
The woman gets pregnant and the memories of these men she can't bear. She hopes they'll go to hell for what they've done to her, left her there with a baby even.
    It's quite dark, yet catchy..

    • @wannabehistorian371
      @wannabehistorian371 4 ปีที่แล้ว +55

I think that White Happy is about someone who has been through a horribly abusive relationship with a manipulative leech who only used them, and is basically daring their ex to take more from them after they’ve already basically ruined their life? And the dominant theory on Rebirth I’ve seen was about a mother who has been forced to have their child, who may be severely disabled or otherwise suffering, and commits a double suicide with the child. I also suspected possibly a human trafficking victim who has basically been forced to become a breeding machine, or maybe kind of like Coin Locker Baby, except the mother is a repeat offender of child-killing, and kills herself over guilt at the end, taking the newest child with her (though that isn’t necessarily contradictory with the whole human trafficking victim idea). Maybe the mother is a victim of sexual abuse, likely incest (probably why the child is so severely disabled) and they’re locked up in their own home as has happened in some high-profile news stories (I specifically recall one such case from Austria. Horrifying stuff). The reincarnation theories are kind of a jarring departure from Maretu’s usual realism IMO.
And Mind Brand to me also sounds like someone who has just come out of a toxic, abusive relationship, possibly a mutually abusive one if the protagonist of Maegamist is their partner’s side of the story. That or Maegamist is about the same person in the past, when they were trying to convince themselves that the relationship isn’t abusive, and Mind Brand is after coming to the realization and they’re angry and bitter. The way the singer talks about joyful past memories with someone and how she disparages the “slut” too kind of leads me to believe this.

Coin Locker Baby to me is a song that is based off of a true thing that happens in Japan.
According to my research, mothers of unwanted pregnancy's would stiff their infants in coin lockers and abandon them.
It's very dark and makes sense why this song is called that if you piece the clues together.
A teenager gets pregnant and stuffs her kid in a coin locker, she feels bad and goes to retrieve the child later only to find that their dead.
The ghost of this child haunts her and later has said to kill her with her 2nd child and husband by pushing her on the train tracks.

My favorite song by Maretu has to be Coin Locker Baby. Despite the song being about the event itself, the song gives us a feeling of the underlying RAGE of the child's spirit through the music as the song grows more and more intense. And the at ending of music video when the music drops away, and you just hear a droning, buzzing noise as the camera slooooooowly pans up to the locker. I love Mind Brand, but it really makes me feel sick. I was sexually abused as a child, and that song resonates with all the bitterness I want to leave behind. I still give it a listen every once in a while, when I need to remember how far I've come from that trauma. I'm mostly okay now, and to an extent that song has become a promise to myself to never let anyone go through that.

This is the main reason I love Vocaloid songs. They just don't speak about "sad stuff". They're realistic. They can be more related to for some people. They can be heard not just for the upbeat that it has but because of the messages that it carries that no other "normal song" carries.

I'm curious if you'll ever do one of these video essays on Western/English vocaloid producers such as GHOST or Creep-P? I'm not the biggest fan of them, but GHOST has had such a long run through the vocaloid community - going from their old Communications series to their newer works - , and they aren't gonna stop any time soon, and Creep-P has always been intriguing to me.

I really like how you used the story at the beginning, left it on a cliffhanger to incorporate it into the main topic and came back to it towards the end to reach a conclusion for the video.
It keeps your attention from the beginning to end!
Maretu portrays very much what I love the most about Vocaloid. Often the producers take a topic that in itself would be either too straight forward, tough or simple to sing about yet they do it in such an abstract and symbolic way. Instead of telling you the story of the song right in the face they play with words, symbols and metaphors which stimulates your imagination. This creates some kind of mystery that draws you in and since you have to think hard about everything it plays a lot with your mind. It's exactly the things we don't understand immediately, the things we aren't told and the things we can't see that run our imagination the most. Like you said, some vocaloid producers use this against us. The comparison to horror summed it up perfectly. I'd like to att another example. Amnesia is a perfect example of a horror game where it uses sound design, art design and athmosphere to drive the player insane. It's the fear of not knowing whats around you and if there even is something dangerous around you. Once you actually get to see the monsters because you make a mistake and get to close to them, it looses its mystery and thus becomes less scary.
I really love Maretus use of Miku. The lower pitch fits the music so well and is very pleasant to listen to.
I am also a huge enthusiast of how artistic he gets with typography. My favourites are his cover arts for S.I.U and Whity Happy.

Actually Romeo and Juliet were living in normal circumstances at the time, so it’s anything but unrealistic. And Eraser Girl was about that? I thought it was about a lesbian couple who are driven to suicide because of homophobia? There’s really a lot of interpretations of his songs.
Man I’ve never listened to Coin Locker Baby to the end. I’m just way too much of a chicken to lol. Ive never really been scared by his music, but his songs are so visceral and powerful and I love them. Also the colors and music sometimes really give me that later Showa early Heisei lower class neighborhood Japan feel for some reason. Or at least those depressing neighborhoods which seem stuck in that era. Maybe it’s the chiptune too. Japan wasn’t actually always safe, in fact as late as the 70s it was a pretty rough place over here I heard. Hell there was a straight-up tent city slum somewhere in Kyoto I believe until the 90s. Even my mother who comes from a more affluent background has told me about how delinquents weren’t that unfamiliar a presence when she was in school in the 70s and 80s. In that kind of environment I can kind of see how such disgusting things like literally leaving babies out to die in lockers could have happened.

One thing that intrigues me is how both maretu and kikuo make songs with fucked up subject matters but have very different tones or feeling put in them,
kikuos songs sound like theyre from the perspective of someone going to heaven and the song is them atoning for their sins or looking at their life for one last time, a kind of "its ok" vibes comes from them
whereas maretus songs sound like theyre from the perspective of someone going to hell and the song is them learning why they are going to hell.
Where kikuos songs have this light airy quality to them somewhere among the dark sounds, maretus songs sound like pure dark gritty torture and the only happiness left for you is whatever sick twisted pleasure you can derive from the otherwise misery that surrounds you.

I would've loved to hear what you had to say about Namida and Pink, my two favorite Maretu songs, but unfortunately both of them came out after this video was released. Maretu's music has a morbid theme that reminds me of some of Steampianist's work. There's a song by Steampianist that causes me to have a panic attack whenever I listen to the opening notes of it, but the messages in Maretu's music have made me think for more than any of Steampianist's songs have. To the point that I still debate what the true meaning behind Pink might be with people online on a fairly frequent basis (cannibalism vs. the romanticization of violent acts and individuals in the media). Very thought provoking stuff

MARETU is my all time favorite producer, not just because of his tuning or instrumentals (even though both are PERFECT). I loved his music mostly for it’s message. It felt a lot more real if that makes sense? I love Kikuo’s music but something felt off about it. It was too straightforward, easily interpreted. I’m one for songs that can be open for interpretation and MARETU’s music does just that. I understand the popular theories to these songs but when I feel sad, the songs take a whole new different meaning. The meanings are so realistic and deep, I feel like I’m being told the story of a real person’s experiences through these songs. It’s amazing. Not to mention that I have 0 doubts MARETU does experience some of those same emotions as his songs. His music means the world to me, helps me when I’m sad, and even inspired me to become a producer myself!

I’d like to make an RPG out of said universe. Once i finally have the characters and plot complete, first thing i’m gonna do is get Maretus permission to use his instrumentals.
Not only have i been a fan of vocaloid since i was a kid, i’ve also been a fan of metal back in middle school, and still equally love both today. The metal elements Maretu adds combined with his own is perfect. I can especially recognize which bands he references and is inspired by.
For example, the riff in rational time was heavily inspired by lamb of god, which was put into the track *perfectly*. in Tool, you hear someone shout “here comes the pain!” which i’ve heard in slipknots “(sic)” track.
In maretus track “the taste of cockroach”, the end repeats the phrase ‘the whole thing i think is sick’. this was also from slipknots intro track to their self titled album 742617000027. an instrumental track in fried eye, CORN, i can tell was named after and inspired by the band Korn.
It’s crazy how much Maretu takes inspiration from other bands, and i’m 100% all for it. I think it sounds amazing the way maretu blends metal riffs with such disturbing topics and lyrics that are eerily well written, instead of romanticized.

Huh I’m not the only person who has found inspiration from Maretu (and other producers as well but Maretu songs are pretty good with this)! Though not to your extent.

That's a great material explaining what probably hits the most in Maretu's music. I can also tell as a person who experienced abuse, that these songs perfectly show the fear, the complex emotions and situations, the reality and how harsh it is. Realisticly, without simplicity or avoiding what's the harshest. It did comfort me plenty of times when I strived to survive, and made me at ease that I am not alone and something IS expressing what I feel.

@c a r o l i n Everywhere At The End Of Time by The Caretaker, the purpose of the album was to explore the progression of dementia in a way that could be understood to those of us without it. reminds me of living today with social media. It's hard to live your life normally knowing of all these terrible things happening all over the world, for most the only thing you can do is sign a petition that doesn't work or send some money you don't have yourself. However ignoring it also feels terrible. You do what you can for the local matters but sometimes you can't help but feel overwhelmed and hopeless.

Man, the ending part of Mind Brand always gets me! Gives me the chills every time I see the video!
It’s a great example that simplistic visuals and your imagination is all you need to truly disturb you! The “I want to forget everything” line together with the slow fade out and sudden appearance of the next, more brutal picture is just perfect lol
I’m serious! Gives me the chills every time!

Another view some people have in Before I Was Born is that the game shown in the layout never started, so they think it means the end of something that never started. This does make sense, as a part the lyrics can be translated as "Before I was born i was dead", but well it's just an interpetation and doesn't necessarely upbring to yours, in fact they could go well together and the lyrics are just purely interpetation
