ProTools won’t convert songs to wav. Anymore for Mastering purposes..and wth is -6104 error I keep gettin? Can I reinstall ProTools and fix both issues? Please Help! I’m using PT7LE
Another option in the playback engine dialogue box is having "dynamic plug-in processing" activated. It only uses CPU on Plug-ins that have audio actively being processed. For example, if a plug-in is inserted on a track/aux/mstr but there is no audio for any moment, your CPU will kind of stand-by that plug-in's CPU demand. If you don't have dynamic plug-in processing checked, any plug-in loaded will use your CPU.

I stopped using pro tools after 17 years because of this exact thing. Randomly getting cpu overloads. I’ve tried everything you could think of and it would even mess up while tracking with no plugins and it would do it in random spots while working paid sessions. I finally moved over to logic and never had any issues like that.

System Preferences > Spotlight > Search Results > uncheck every category and uncheck "Allow Spotlight Suggestions in Look up" > Privacy > add Applications, Desktop, Documents, Downloads, and all your hard drives...
Cons: You lose Spotlight functionality.
Pros: Spotlight never sends your system into overload when it starts indexing everything ever again.

Google Chrome will cause major CPU issues on Mac with ProTools 2021.3, even when Chrome is not running !!! I just deleted Chrome and instantly solved my Pro Tools freezes and CPU overloads. The buffer size had no effect at all.
All facts. I have chrome on my max and it’s the worst. It’s great on pc but I’m deleting it myself. It slows everything down.
When I first started mixing a few years back I would put delay and reverb on each track individually. Destroyed my cpu usage. Pro tools would get slow and stop responding on a mix with like 10 tracks lol. Computer wasn't the best but I made it work.
Something else I''ll do is bounce out vocals with the tuning printed on before I start doing things like eq and compression etc. This could be because I'm used to mixing on older computers but I always found auto tune to use up more power than other plugins and having it on 10 tracks was just not possible.
Yea great tip. Commit the auto tune. Pro tools allows you to commit the whole rack now. But I’m afraid of commitment. Lol

Cut of your firewall, activity monitor, energy saver, screen timer, which is a monitor when to tell the computer to sleep. Defrag disk, and delete unnecessary files. Change the cache in Protools when getting noise.
So fed up of Protools locking up I switched to Studio One using same computer for 2 years not locked up once QED
no way I think im gonna try that out man I guess some computers arent meant for pro tools and some are but fucks me ill be working on a session and it will just freeze for like 10 seconds at a time so if your telling through your experience that theres a better world then I must try see, because I dont wanna know about pro tools anymore!

So what happens to me quite a lot is that the CPU box pops up, I hit OK and play again get weird “distorted “Cyclon” (BattleStar Galactica) digital fart sound”. I figured out that unplugging my headphones and plugging them back in fixed it (but that would eventually ruin that input)...but now I just change the buffer size to anything else and that does it. That’s a good hack for any stall, freezing, won’t play issues.
I think Commit and Freeze are probably the best ideas for the “Battle of the CPU”.

The function Commit on tracks print the plug-ins in a new audio track and is really helpful when you’ve got lots of them. Then if you wanna modify sth you always can go back to the original Track
Dynamic Plug-in Processing only uses plug-ins when they are needed.

Write down all of the installers, and delete them after saving them on chrome or usb flash drive. Update plugins but uninstalled the old ones first one by one, the old driver will cause issues on the update. If you mix videos try to get a second computer just for that , videos and software takes up so much space some software is 900 Meg's.
Need to ask questions: First sound playback on a finished song was disabled and none of the multitude of fixes worked, so I decided to start over. Tried to use a previous template that worked and now screen is frozen on the I/O setup window. Ready to pull the plug because I’m frustrated.

I never had this error problem until I started using EZ keys or EZ bass. And that's with nothing else in the session either. Just 1 singing track. And CPU power says only using 4%. Totally no clue. Anyone else have this problem??
Have you managed to find a fix? I'm literally not using anything kept one plugin and I get the CPU error as well. nothing running in the background either.
Good video WavyWanye. I also found it helpt to increase the Cache Size.
One way I've found very nice, is to commit MIDI to audio.
And if I'm using guitar plugins, once I've decided my sound for these DI tracks I freeze the tracks to save some power.
If I need to make a change in sounds I can unfreeze and disable the commit as well.
It has helped me a lot.
I generally keep MIDI unfreezed when I'm producing, not mixing.
Facts. Virtual instruments eat up that CPU!
Change the disk playback cache size in the playback engine from "normal" to 25% of your RAM.
Great tip...amazing nobody jumped in with a comment or like. I’ll do it right now. That CPU warning box and I are fast becoming greatly acquainted...which sucks.

Have you experienced opening a plugin (instrument or effect) that would appear white blank? and PT just hangs up? DO you know a fix on that?
@fivesixspins Also wanted to add; by default AVID Video Engine is enabled. This can take up to 4gb of RAM which can lead to memory issues while using ProTools. To disable go to (in ProTools) Setup > Playback Engine > Video Engine > uncheck this box. I'm sure Windows is in a similar fashion. Found this link to be helpful:

I’m having trouble with trap tune plug-in that I purchased. When I turn it on for a plug-in certain parts of the vocal will cut out or make a humming sound instead of processing the plug-in correctly. Do you have any idea what could cause that?

Defrag your HD... comp doesnt need so much energy lookin for stuff...defragin it keeps the disk neat and tidy. Im runnin PT 1st on a pentium processor...rec as you know is i5 or better...but hey got 6 songs recorded, just have to breakdown the work flow..can only do so much with limited cpu power, and PT intro daw...I got maybe 3 reverbs, 1 comp/limit...
When it works it works flawlessly then when it doesn’t nothing works at all when everything worked the day before. And i didn’t change a thing. Very frustrating

8:24 Hey! What does the Disk Playback section do? Can it help? How about the "freeze" feature? Does it exist in ProTools? I'd definitely USE Separate Project for recording. I usually create separate folders inside of my project (song) folder - 1 for recording (1st) & then second (with the "!" before it's name so it'll stay on top) for the Mixing.
p.s. Off the topic: Is there a shortcut for "save as"? What about the AutoSave feature? If it does exist, can it save with the different names like every 10/30 minutes? I usually "save as" w the different names (incremental numbers and short description of what was I doing there) so I can find it later if something went wrong or let's say I want to extract some Stems before I've rendered the VSTz on them etc

Hey Wayne, great vid! What if I'm recording a live show, though. Should I set my H/W buffer size high? Latency isn't an issue since no one needs to hear what's being recorded.
I use Tracks Live by Waves, its free to use and super user friendly, just bounce it out to pro tools for mixing later
Biggest problem these days is either poor or non existent compatibility with the computer's operating system. ProTools just doesn't seem to keep up any more, haven't been any updates to the app for almost a whole year, while Mac OS has in that time done one major update and four or five minor ones, and Windows 10 has updated several times too. It won't work at all on Mac because the Mac OS is now Catalina, which doesn't support 32 bit apps like ProTools and Yellow Tools Independence. Windows 10 is too advanced for ProTools to run well inside it and it freezes after a few seconds of use, like it is about to produce the black screen of death.

Ran into this myself! Midi clips tend to share the same “reference” performance. Update the clip name of the one you want to change and then you should be good to go!

H/W buffer size: 64 samples
OPTIMIZATIONS: Ignore errors during playback, dynamic plugin processing, limit number of real time threads
DISK PLAYBACK CACHE: 1GB
(this IS the most important step)

Whats the disk cache feature about under playback engine? I hear the settings may affect CPU Power in some capacity, but I could be wrong.

What about when you have more than a few plugins on a session and you need to record more? How do you overcome the issue of a client wanting a good monitor mix when you're at 256 samples or lower? The issue I'm having is that there is no "sweet spot" between low buffer size (64 samples and thus fewer plugins), and a higher buffer size (1024 samples) with tons of latency. Is the only true answer spending thousands on an Apollo and a new computer? :(
Bro. Bounce the mix you've got in a stereo wav, at the same bit rate and everything. Set start and end markers first, which you will use later. Open a blank session, and import your bounced stereo mix. Record new audio for your client in the new session at whatever buffer size you want. You can then bring the newly recorded audio into your previous mix. A little bit of a fuck around but that's what I do

Waiting on a 27” iMac intel (maybe one of the last intels before AMD)3.6 ghz - turbo boost to 5gb, 10th gen 10 cores i9, 72 gigs ram if I’m still hurting I might be switching I got Studio One on a partitioned drive so I’m learning it but prefer ProTools I got my cert on mpower 8, also I with avid would create a feature to enable auto buffer size changes when your tracking and float back on playback for mixing
