  • Pro Tools is known to be a difficult software when it comes to stability. Playback errors and session issues are a fairly ubiquitous experience amongst PT users. This video will cover optimizations to get Pro Tools running its best - including some optimizations that can't be found on the Avid website or in a Google search.

    I've been working professionally with Pro Tools for almost 20 years and some of these are completely new to me. Great video, this one is going in my save folder.

    Once AVID was sold to a private equity firm it started a downwards spiral. Bear in mind, the new owner has no music industry background and has only one goal, and that's profit. I'm a user of PT for decades, but lately I feel it has become the most unreliable DAW on the planet. Damn, I'd really love to continue to work with PT, but at the same time I have to be realistic and look around for other options, sad but true.

    I want to sincerely say thank-you, Matthew. By following this video I fixed my “sluggish metering.” Also, deleting the PT bridge helped my word clock locking at start-up! Cheers.

    How to speed up Pro Tools... run Reaper with a Pro Tools theme. 😉

    I’m going to try some of these optimizations. I have a 13 trash can. It smokes. However, in the last year or so I’m getting these 1-3 second random hang ups. Driving me bonkers. Great vid. 👍

    I started using Pro Tools because everyone told me that this is what most of my peers are using, so I should use it too. Now I'm wondering if there is a better daw without these obvious hiccups in quality.

      Depends what you're doing. Functionally I think there are better options out there. But PT has its advantages as well.

    I discovered plug-in cycling on my own kuz I realized it was crashing as it was reading the plugs, and if I removed the one that it was scanning as it crashed, it would be able to move on to the next one. So I started removing them in batches. I also learned the hard way that if you try to put them all back at once, it just gets overwhelmed. Reaper reads my VST, vst3 and au plug-in folders when I replace it with a new updated version in like 2 minutes. Yet protools can’t handle more than 30 or so AAX plugins at a time. So annoying. Especially when you’re doing 30 at a time for like 1000 plugins. I know I don’t need them all, but I paid for them gosh darn it and I want my options available. “Protools infrastructure sucks” isn’t the reason I wanted to start ignoring plugins I have yet to even fully explore

    • @zwsh89
      @zwsh89 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      And as much as I agree with you that this tip should be more readily accessible without going through Avids official support chain, this problems existed for as long as I can remember. You know what would be a much better solution that spreading the word so more people know how to waste hours of their time cycling plugins? If Avid fixed it’s software so it could actually read the plugins it forces developers to make specifically for their product. No one else uses AAX. The least avid could do is make AAX seamless as possible. I wouldn’t have this note if cubase had issues with VSTs and logic had issues with AU’s. But they don’t. Not only that, but every other daw can read both of those formats, and all work better than PT on this front. The insustry standard has shifted towards better reliability, and avid just hasn’t bothered to keep up

    Helpful Video for those that may need the Help Optimizing their Macs , but I'm Not Having The same Problems with My Intel Based Mac. My Avid Bridge works fine I'm also working at the highest resolution with no problems. But having other macs in the past I've noticed that The Biggest Problems come from the lack of Ram!!! or what Graphic Card is being used. Differnt Macs use different Graphic cards , which will make a major difference in your computer's performance.

    I've been using Pro Tools since was created in 1991 and there's been always these problems with sluggish and slow performance if you not running HD systems.
    You can try these tips over and over again, but if running in a box, especially with 3rd plugins, you keep getting these issues.
    Avid will never gonna code a new Pro Tools version from scratch, so its a 20+ years DAW.
    For personal projects, I just use Studio One, and its like apples to oranges in terms of performance. Just try create same mixing session on both Daws, and see for yourself.

    Very informative.......Do you have a video on missing plugins?

    • @zwsh89
      @zwsh89 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don’t think he does but my solution has been the same tip he gave about cycling plugins. Go to your protools plugins folder, and find the AAX file for the missing plug-in. If you can’t find it, that’s probably the issue, try and reinstall and make sure the AAX gets in there. If you can find the AAX, move it somewhere other than the protools plugins folder, I have a folder on my desktop called “broken plugs to fix” where I temporarily move them. Once it’s safely stashed away, reopen protools, let it scan the folder without the AAX, and then quit once it finishes scanning. Then put the plug-in back in the main folder, open protools again, and unless there’s an actual issue with the version or updating, or with intel/m1 compatibility, that seems to solve the problem most of the time. If it doesn’t, I’d check for updates from the plug-in manufacturer, and go through the whole process again. (Waves plugins and others that use a “shell” will need to be fully uninstalled and reinstalled in the associated plug-in manager). Hope this helps!

    I'm sorry, but I'm here to vent. I'm about to do a session at an outside studio and have to use PT for the first time in a few years. Downloaded the free version to brush up on it. Man, I forgot how bad this is. So slow. So bloated. How does this take up 6 GB on my hard drive?! Like, you don't just install Pro Tools... you install PT plus the 8 other support apps it needs to run. And how is there STILL not a polarity reverse switch on the channel strips. HOW!????? Inexcusable! To all the studio managers out there: Please look into ditching your Avid interfaces and get something that plays nice with all DAW's. I could have just brought in a standalone copy of Reaper and there would have been no need to waste my time on this.
