Two Greyhounds Suffer Fatal Injuries at Florida Racetracks

- According to documents and video footage obtained from the Department of Business and Professional Regulation, two greyhounds suffered fatal injuries during a three-day span in November 2008. On November 17, a three-year old brindle greyhound named Birthday Toy was electrocuted during a race at Sanford Orlando Kennel Club. On November 19, a two-year old fawn greyhound named Jawa Spock was euthanized after breaking both back legs during a race at Palm Beach Kennel Club.
The legislature is considering various proposals to expand gambling and subsidize the live greyhound racing industry.
Greyhound racing is opposed by every major animal protection group. Revenues from dog racing have declined precipitously in recent years, and fourteen dog tracks have closed or ended live racing since 2004.
Please tell me they stopped using live rails right next to the damn track.

Frequently Greyhounds who have raced are unable to sit due to how their muscles develop. For Greys to pass CGC they are usually allowed to do a "down stay." They are very clever, but learn differently from many other breeds and Greys are very sensitive-you can't yell at them. Yes, I know this sounds bat-shit crazy, but I have been owned by Greyhounds since 1999 and have fostered dozens.
It's the height of human ignorance and arrogance that we assume that other animals just exist for our amusement/pleasure
I went to Panama City Beach tracks last week because I was taken in a group. While watching the races I saw an accident that was disturbing. Then upon talking to others I discovered an employee at the same track was sent to prison for not feeding and watering an entire kennel full of greyhounds and they all died. It was over 100 dogs. It changed my entire view of how these dogs are treated (or mistreated).
:/ my mother fosters ex-race greyhounds. the condition they are in when they first leave the race-trainers is heart-breaking. severely underweight, threadbare looking fur, rashes on their skin, 'bed-sores' from being on hard surfaces all the time, lack of any basic command training (when a 4 year old dog doesn't know 'sit' or anything else is makes them much harder to rehabilitate for adoption).
Please, PLEASE don't judge the whole hobby! Here in Finland racing dogs are also loved family member. I have aracng whippet and racing afghan hound. My whippet sleeps in my bed every night and is the sweetest thing in the world. He LOVES to race, he's always happy and ready to go when we go to race. Racing is what sighthounds are bred to do and they LOVE it.
It's the money that makes people do shitty things. Luckily betting is illegal here in Finland and I hope it will always be.

at least the racing industry could apply fees for the retirement, R&R , and health care when you consider how hard those dogs work, and how much the industry profits from them.
It's the same in horse racing, abuse in abundance.

Best breed ever..we have three. Save a greyhound...adopt a retired racer.....you will be the lucky one!!
Breaking both legs (depending on the location) can be nearly impossible to fix. These dogs are adopted out of a regular basis, they are often taken care of after broken toes, legs, and even spines; unfortunately, if the injury is going to cause the pup severe pain in recovery or if will never walk again they will be put down. This is not the 1980s, euthanization is not the only choice for these dogs anymore even after injury, but sometimes it is necessary.
As a vet tech,I can tell you in the case of a broken leg(s) it may be the most humane thing for the animal. Dogs aren't humans, you can't tell them to stay on bed rest, or not to try to run because they're feeling good on the pain meds. Recovery from compound fractures such as these (the legs are flapping if you watch closely) are very difficult to heal in and uncooperative animal. In the end its up to the owner to make the final decision, neither decision is a bad one.
The question is: "How can anyone who knows these facts see it as moral?"
First video: the fact that the camara panned away before the lead dog finnished leads me to believe that the dog was still on the track. so either the racingmanager should have stoped the race before to prevent further injury to other dogs. the hare operator could have used some comon sense and stoped it, or one of the trainers could have run out and got him (they do at our track). Inside hare rails are common in america but they're fu***ing dangerous. Im england we mainly use the outside rail

@madkwonusa Not all are. Some are sent to shelters and rescues and adopted into happy, loving families.
How did they get hurt ?
It's very telling that the camera in the first race didn't show the last quarter lap... there was probably quite a mess on the track that still needed cleaning up.
The faster they go out of business because they can't compete with the casinos... the better.
By 'euthanized' it actually means 'left to starve/shot in the stomach/cement blocks tied to its legs and thrown in to a lake'
The country if flooded with these discarded ex-racers. It's a shame how we use and abuse animals at our whim.
Greyhounds (I had fostered a couple a while back) are the coolest of the cool and so loving and sweet.
To see them abused so is heartbreaking, but man's GREED keeps it continuing.
Usually, they run way too fast, they fall over, they get injured. Injuries also occur at the "curve" of the track if it's circular, i'm sure you know why.
first dog might be, but the second dogs injuries really arent fatal at all.
Same here, I'm pretty sure dog racing isn't illegal but I have no idea as to if it's actually cruel to have dogs run like this.
and here I thouught the lure was on a pulley system with cables and a winch to pull the lure back to the start again, with a motor at the far end to pull it at speed.
Oh my God! The worst part is how when the dog stumbled they still continuted with the camera positioned on the other dogs like it was nothing!
@ultrafreshsolid.... know how you feel. i work at the crayford greyhound track in england. having to watch 2 grown men strugle to carry a dog writhing in agony with a broken back .... lost a lot of sleep over that one.
is it common for these dogs to just fall/ stumble during these races? I was expecting to see dogs bumping eachother be the cause of the falls

@chainamarie03 I agree,these poor creatures are used and abused for humans selfish needs :( I feel bad that as a kid my parents took us to Derby Lane racing track,though we know better now. I work with dogs,and greyhounds are very sensitive dogs-good for you for fostering some
They should make it like quarter horse racing in a straight line i think there would be less injury.

This is one of the most cruel sports next to hunting, horse racing, and bull fighting. It's absolutely hateful. It should be banned because it's pure animal cruelty.

The inner track has a lure (a fake hare) on an electric rail - which is sort of what they chase when they run.
+Lance Rosko they killed it because it sustained to many injuries to race anymore, these sick people don't even give them medical treatment, they use them as entertainment and when there old or injured, they shoot them in the head and cut of there ear and throw them away like trash :(
Obviously it isn't illegal, there are many dog racing competitions around the world. The question is "Is it immoral?"
@giantrobot9000..... true to a point. depends on the trainer and the owner. greyhounds can sometimes come back from a broken hock (main bone in the rear leg) but mostly anything on the front legs will have a much harder tim healing and the dog would most likley never race again. so its put to sleep in many ocasions.
@KrisszKhaos Birthday Toy stupdly got dangerously too close to live wire and was electrocuted to death. Jawa Spock accidentally rammed into a metal barring and shattered both shins, much to the manager's horror

i hate this dogs arent made to race there made to be loved and cared for and be a mans best friend and whats worst after they cant race anymore some people put them to sleep,and its horrrible

Actually not true. Dogs are built to be able to fend for themselves in the wild. Even humans took them out of their regular habitat in order to "love and nurture" them as pets. Although I don't particularly agree with dog racing, your comment is invalid.
because greyhounds have been line bred for so much speed, they are not as hardy as other breeds, hence why they break legs quite easily, or tear skin by playing with other dogs easily. Because of this, surgery is difficult, and the road to recovery is even more so. Sometimes, for this breed, it is better to just put them out of their misery, much like horses.
I have a greyhound from an adoption agency, I love her to bits, but this breed is different to others.

Honestly, humans shouldn't make others achieve what they cannot especially when they are not as hardworking, diligent, and disciplined as others. This is extremely saddening that animals are dying from being abused and injured and worked against their own will. Just because they can't speak, doesn't mean they have nothing to say.

as you can see, there is risk of suffering injuries, and a dog, that can't run for his owner no more often gets "euthanized"... i read of an incident where 60 dead greyhounds where found, all of them with the ear cut off, that would identify them and their owner. Sadly, this "sport" isn't much more than slavery.
That's no excuse. Go out an get a real job instead of torturing these animals. This rates right up there with Pitbull fighting. Straight up animal abuse no matter how you look at it.

Greyhound racing is horrible in general!
They're greyhounds. In the wild they'd be used to chasing and hunting rabbits and hares, and such. Whether people just use that about them to get them to race so they can bet doesn't sound all too great. It is legal, but maybe, to an extent, it shouldn't really.
Why euthanize? They should be the one to euthanize instead... First you raise the dog and put on a race to make you happy... that's your need and he tried his best but after the dog suffered from injury you terminate the dog???? in that moment the dog needs you. You should return the favor! Very cold master - I mean monster! Tsk...tsk...

every day billions of dogs are killed for our enjoyment. people make them fight, run around tracks, and sometimes they push them into big holes and burry them alive. man has no business hurting dogs, or cats for that matter.

It is legal and it doesn't have to be cruel. These dogs like to run and are treated good but accidents happen on poor racetracks

I agree with everything but hunting. I mean yeah trophy hunting is cruel but hunting to eat? The only way some people where I live can eat mean is to go out and kill it. But yes, i think all the others are cruel :)
I totally agree with you! I hope to rescue a grey hound one day, they make such a loving family pet and its such a waste to see them used as objects, people say its just business, no, its immoral people that just simply dont give a shit...and I hope they burn in hell for not even trying to save them :(
