Watch the BBC first on iPlayer 👉 bbc.in/iPlayer-Home Siena in Italy is a walled, medieval city divided into 17 districts. For centuries these neighbourhoods have settled their rivalries in a ritual horserace, the Palio. Avio Tanganelli is fiercely loyal to his district Giraffa, and epitomises the Sienese passion for the Palio. For him, 'the Palio is war'. The tension mounts for Avio as each district is allotted its horse, and its form is tested over a series of trial races. On race day, the horse is ritually blessed in the local chapel, before it is led in great ceremony to the central square. Finally, the jockeys push and jostle to line up for this three-lap, 70-second race.

This was great, I've been looking for "how much do race horses sell for?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Mayanjamin Subconscious Method - (do a search on google )?

There're some other old-school horse races in Europe but they're worse for the public: the beach racing in Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Spain). It's just one huge stretch of wet sand, maybe over a mile long, and like 4-5 horse races per race.

the word Siena reminds me of the bills of exchange of which the bank of Siena and the Cinta Senese were invented (so I have read somewhere), then the Palio. however I do not do text because I consider the traditions to be completely false. in their day they might have made sense now they survive for
the municipal coffers (and I approve) not tytte the traditions are beautiful, for example in various countries of Europe there was the tradition of burning witches, beating Jews before Pascua and Christmas. The only good traditions are those of food (and not even because if we ate things cooked in ancient times we would die or vomit) beautiful video, music, horrible comments from the Sienese. Hello

Actually, if they learn about it, and experience the emotions of it, people can gain a reasonable understanding, if not the full experience of living there all your life and being a contradiolo. Siena's palio is unique among all palii in Italy, but their emotions, loyalties, frailties, joy and sorrow are common to all humans. I think it should be celebrated not just for Siena, but as a window into our humanity for all people. As they say, the Palio is life. It's a living metaphor for life. I'm grateful that the Senesi take pains to maintain the tradition.

Good documentary for how short it was! As a sienese, I just have one remark on the title: there are 17 contradas (“neighborhoods”) total, but only 10 race at one time, so there are only 10 jockeys as well.
Also, nothing personal with BBC but I can ASSURE you they will never be welcome back to the Giraffa contrada, sienese are really really superstitious and an injury to our horses is probably the second worst thing that could happen to us

Eh, it's a horse race that dates to the 1200s at least, and in the modern code since 1644; the contradas are the factions that made Tuscany, these people used to kill each other in violent brawls back in the days - only normal that the conception of what the race should be is quite different!

Racing in the uk isn’t JUST for money. It too has a rich history and has been around since the 1700s and even earlier. A lot of people adore racehorses, me included. I think it’s an accessible way to get to see horses in action. The money just means that people can make it their life work, so they can dedicate their lives to these horses rather than having to do it as a hobby only.

The long white tables in the streets, THE FOOD, the men drunk on homebrew red wine singing songs with each other into the night. I got to buy beer for the first time. Birra Moretti or something. It was a wild and mentally exhausting experience. On race day I had to pee so bad and barely made it back into the Piazza before the race began. Our Contrada actually LOST that year too..Ended a losing streak of 80 something years. It was a Wild Wild experience. Wore the soles off my shoes in two weeks. My entire family was with me. I wanted to be a part of their world & didn’t want to to home. Sometimes I still do.

The Palio of Asti and the Siena one are very similar: the Siena one is probably more chaotic as there are way more people and the circuit isn’t regular and it takes place twice a year. Our Palio takes place only once a year and it is less chaotic, but the members are more, 21, both from the city and from town nearby.
