    Fun fact about the Sprinter trains: why are they called Sprinter? In the 70s, many commuter lines were introduced where trains had to stop regularly. A brand new train was introduced: SGM. It was quickly called "Sprinter" because it had the fastest acceleration time in the day, just for the purpose of stopping and starting regularly while in service. The trains were retired, but the name stuck.

      @@bambiertje The sprinter is not really a short-distance service.
      There're running pretty long distances. From Uitgeest to Amersfoort, Or from Hoorn to Rotterdam.
      The NS ran according to the 'basic timetable' at the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. There were only Sprinter services running at the time.
      They also had 3 intercity-services running. Den Helder- Arnhem, Eindhoven - Schiphol and Groningen - Zwolle.

      That's true. Only there's one thing that can change.
      In some circumstances they use Intercity trains as sprinter. Or the trains called 'sprinter' are running Intercity services.
      I recently traveled from Putten to Anna Paulowna, and the Intercity from Amsterdam to Anna Paulowna was a 10 car long 'sprinter'.

      The US is car-oriented because of its geography: lots of space for wide roads, enormous distances between various logistical hubs. Freight travel via rail is feasible but passenger travel takes way too long. The Netherlands is heavily focused on public transport due to it being compact and very logistically dense. + having oodles of large natural waterways takes pressure off of the rail system in terms of freight traffic which is then available for transporting passengers. Car ownership here is still very high though.

      @@classicallpvault8251 this is such a bad argument. When people talk about us transit they do not talk about a route between new york and LA. They talk about dense local corridors. Even the northeast corridor has horrible public transit by international standards. There are a lot of these corridors. And dont forget, driving would take significantly longer than a good train, by a significant factor. But 6k km distances arent what is being talked about. Those are airplane distances.

Students all travel for free on either weekdays or weekends (you can choose) and always get a 40% discount on the other days. People who travel a lot for work with the train usually have a 40% discount subscription (which is just €5.60 a month) and some companies get their employees business travel cards. 5:04 lounge seats in standart class are actually quite normal in the Netherlands nowadays.
    2 other InterCity types (DDZ and VIRM, the 2 double floored trains) share this interior choice. It was already introduced when the DDZ (then a stoptrain called DDAR which was renewed to serve as an InterCity) back in 2013 and was later added to the renewed VIRM 1, one of the 4 versions of this train build throughout the years, in 2016 when it got the renewed DDZ interiour. The interiour of the ICNG from this video is another completely new design which also got its own version in the recently renewed VIRM 2 and 3.
    So there are basically 3 comeplytely different types of VIRM on the tracks. The VIRM 1 got a sligtly reworked exteriour pattern to partially match the DDZ, VIRM 2 and 3 are in the new brand apperence and VIRM 4 still has the old exteriour patterns.

    Towards the end you spoke about the cost, saying it was "not cheap" and there was no benefit to advance booking. I would agree with that, but with NS, it's reasonable and very convenient. NS basically operates their network like a nationwide metro system, so you can always just rock up to the station and buy a ticket for immediate travel anywhere in the country. And on the occasions I was fortunate enough to have need to use NS, there was always plenty of capacity on the trains. It's probably not cheap to run a system in such a manner as the Dutch do, but it is very convenient and makes for a pleasant passenger experience.

      @@urbandiscount Really depends on route and - obviously - material. I commute to work using two sprinter trains (in the Randstad) and haven't really had a problem getting a seat, even during rush hours. But then, these two sections typically use a pair of SLTs. Sometimes it's just one, and then it does get cosy.
      Still, we were talking about the comparison to S-Bahns and I think that still holds because of the regularity of frequency (once half an hour or once an hour at a standard time). Go to, say, a Stuttgart suburb and you'll get a similar service.

    Sprinter local services got there name because of the stadsgewestelijkmaterieel (SGM) translating cityregion rolling stock. They where build in the 70ties to serve on the railway lines around Rotterdam and The Hage witch had verry tight stop spacing, because of that it was important that the trains had a verry high acceleration to run the tight schedule and be competitive with driving true higher average speeds. The SGM gained the nickname Sprinter because of that high acceleration and the short stop distances. The name sprinter then gradually changed to mean al local services regardless of the rolling stock. And because sprinter is much better marketing that stoptrein (stopping train) that was previously used, sprinter was then officially adopted by ns to refer to local services.

      @sanderappel4499 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be more precise, there were three classes, stoptrein, sneltrein and intercity. Depending on the rolling stock, some sneltrein lines were called sprinter. Once the non-sprinter rolling stock for the stoptrein was phased out, all trains stopping at all stations were re-branded as sprinter, while the intermediate sneltrein was also abolished leaving only the intercity and sprinter classes.

    Neat stuff. In Denmark DSB, the Danish state railways, have ordered 100 very similar trains to the ICNG too. Their trains, named the IC5, are also from the Coradia Stream platform and will also operate at 200km/h. DSB has also had its own rendezvous with Ansaldo Breda so theres that too. Our IC5 trains should enter service in 2025 if things stick to the current schedule, and they'll be used in everything from short regonal journeys to cross country express trains. DSB plans to only have 3 types of vehicles operating by 2030. The IC5's, Vectron locomotives with Talgo carraiges (for international trains, starting in 2024), and Vectron locomotives with double decker carriages (primarily regional services to and from Copenhagen)

      @@placeholdername0000 Well not really. Those 2 train types are gonna be retired by 2030. The real issue are the IC4 DMU's built by Ansaldo Breda. DSB needs enough new units to fully replace that fleet. And the IC4's maintenance facility is in Aarhus, to which there is no electrification. But in order to turn on electric wires, the signals along a line need to either be immunised which is expensive, or replaced entirely by ERTMS lv.2 which the IC4's aren't equipped to operate with. So the IC4's can't be retired until there are enough electric IC5's to replace them, and the IC5's can't be used on the mainlines up to Aarhus and Aalborg at all until the IC4 is fully retired. So if theres another delay to the IC5's, thats gonna cause all sorts of delays and domino effects on the danish rail network

    Currently there are defective tracks on the HSL Zuid. There is a termpoary speed restriction of 160 and 80kmh before you enter the 7km long Groene hart Tunnel on the HSL. Normally the ICNG would be operating at 160kmh while the TRaxx and ICRMh are still in service. However as you might already start realising, due to the delay those TSRs cause the ICNG goes 200kmh to make up the delay caused by the TSR :)

    While I like them, the interiors seem to be a bit over-engineered to my taste. All those different zones indicated by lighting, those lounge seats and lots of 4 around a central table... While it all looks great, I think in the long run most people will prefer simple airline style seating.

    • @mennoltvanalten7260
      @mennoltvanalten7260 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think 4-seats are great on longer journeys when you have luggage, loved that when I went through big parts of Germany by train, but indeed I hope to see more 2-seats and less luggage racks on the replacements for the Den Haag-Eindhoven line

    • @ageoflove1980
      @ageoflove1980 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mennoltvanalten7260 Well, in reality the airline sstyle seat often works as a single seat, where you yourself sit at the window and your backpack or shopping bags or whatever are placed on the isle seat. This offers a lot of privacy. When it gets really busy you can simply put your bag on you lap or on the floor in front of you. With 4-seats you really dont have its option and usually only one person sits at the window because legroom is somehow always cramped when 2 adults sit directly opposite of each other. When you know each other this is not too bad, because you can simply ask the other person to move over a bit, or put their legs towards one side if you are really uncomfortable, but with strangers this would obviously be very awkward to do.

Don't know if this train is a totally separated affaire than let's say an HSL or Eurostar, but because it will operate on the national network only (i guess? haven't been on trains for a while here) those discounts should apply. The extra charge i can somewhat understand, but in general i think it is bullpie to ask for an extra fee for something that should go fast already but hey, welcome to micro managing Nederland ffs. I haven't been excited for a new set since... uh ... 1994 (DD-IRM (now VRIM).. maybe even 1977 (Introduction of the ICM or Koploper)
    5:52 less happy they went with this bamboo-ish decor. I don't think it fits the rest of the train. The whole train is "relaxed" and then suddenly that wall screaming at you "LOOK AT ME, I AM YOUR FACE NOW"
    7:02 OK, OK I am clicking, I am clicking, no need to twist my arm mate
    7:29 BEHOLD, the most BORING train in Europe (together with the SLT and FLIRT), no personality, bland and everybody else is using them as well. Besides.... they are the wrong color, white... not yellow.... BLASPHEMY

Imo we're losing ourselves in the pretty gimmicks and not noticing what is right in front of us; an IC product that has mostly opposing seats and no tables, even in the 'work' area, directly opposing the preference of most (Dutch) travellers; a laughable scarcity of toilets, which the Dutch railways are already not known to maintain well and thus can often be found broken; seats without much padding; a lack of on-board catering, and a lack of top speed (200 km/h) even close to what is permitted on the HSL-Zuid (300 km/h). Only the last one is justifiable imo. I wouldn't call this train incredible. Also NS really needs to up their game for 1st class accomodation. In essence you get a different seat that can recline (not a first btw, many train types in NS do this) in a different colour. It would really help if some softer furnishings were used on the seats and floors (carpet like in may other countries) to distinguise it from standard class, and would realy help the image..

    It is a bit dissapointing to see that the new trains have not really improved the bicycle storage. I couldn't see it well on the video, but it seems to have remain the same principle as before: a sitting area where people will be offended if you ask them to please allow you to put the bicycle as the sign indicates. As soon as there are more than 3 bikes, it is difficult for people to pass. I hope they did install fastening mechanisms for the bikes, as I have seen so many times the bikes just falling over and creating a mess. Yes, yes, the idea is that you don't use them but use the OV-fiets But, that is not convenient for all purposes, and since you are already paying an extra 7 euro fare, they could at least make it so you don't bother other people with your bicycle.
    I hope they come up with a more intuitive application of the toeslag. Right now, the procedure is: go to the lonely red pole with a small sign in dutch telling you to check in if your train passes through the more expensive route. Anyone who hasn't been explained in detail how it works will have a rough time. Very difficult to understand how somebody thought this was the best way to set the system

Fyra, IC4, trams for Gothenburg, trams for Boston, and many more - they proved to be so unreliable that they needed to be entirely rebuilt, or otherwise to be retired a long way ahead of schedule, and many of them were delivered more than 4 years late. I know for a fact that the IC4 project had terrible project management at AnsaldoBreda's plant in Italy. Since then, however, they've become better - and have also been bought out by Hitachi, though they still produce their trains in Italy.
