Works good. I had a basket clogged with coffee buildup. Scrubbing couldnt get it out of the tiny holes. The baking soda did a great job of loosening everything up. Still a little residue on the hard to reach edges. As they say it is good enough for government work thank you!

I'm glad your method worked. We just tried using "dental cleaning tablets" and that worked like a charm.
We used 8 tablets with hot water and soaked the stainless steel carafe and 4 tablets in stainless steel mugs overnight and the next morning it was as clean as a whistle. We just rinsed the pot and mugs and just couldn't believe how thorough this method worked. Nice to see your method thanks for putting this up!

This worked great. If you have a thin bottlebrush (I use the one that came with my aluminum drinking straws) it works great to clean the stem, the center stem of the basket, and inside the spout. Mine is long enough to go the full length of the stem, but I would imagine a shorter one would work well if used from each end of the stem. I like to do a third rinse to make sure no traces of vinegar remain (this is important if you use cream - the vinegar will cause it to curdle).

I tried this, but I used Arm & Hammer Laundry Booster Super Washing Soda instead, also know as sodium carbonate or soda ash. It's very similar to baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and is the main ingredient in coffee maker cleaning solutions. Worked so well I was able to skip the vinegar.

Tried this just now & works great!
I have a tip to offer too...... When you're drinking coffee and you get down to the last cup or 2,unplug the pot unless you're going to drink the last of it fairly quickly. When the fluid levels drop, the flavors start to concentrate, cook onto and collect onto the heating element causing bitter taste. I have the habit of leaving it plugged in, but no more. I'll heat the last of it in the microwave from now on.
Thanks so much for this tip!

This is my 2nd Keurig coffee maker of this model. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxBrV-RbF5Nk0Rlt9i15aao-YMzqzTG8Vf The first worked fine for more than 2 years, and I could still get a decent cup of coffee out of it if I fiddled with it when I decided to replace it. The problem I had with my first unit was this: When attempting to brew a cup of coffee, the unit would either keep brewing until the coffee was undrinkable or it would not run long enough and the coffee produced was way too strong. I cleaned the unit as best I could but it did not help. So in the end it was just too much trouble to get a good cup of coffee out of it, so I decided to replace it with a new one, which has been working great since I unpacked it.

If faced with a really tough cleaning challenge, I have used oven cleaner and abrasives. It is important that the bottom well be free of sediment and also the connection to the tube and the well be sealed well. In my instance I the coffee was coming out weak and thought the thermostat failed. No, it just needed a really good clean. Percs great, rich coffee now and using much less coffee.

I have the exact same percolator. I clean mine thoroughly after every use and every once in a while will place the internals in the dishwasher. They come up as new. Someone (not me) almost emptied the pot and left the percolator on all day. Coffee was baked to the bottom. Easy fix!!! I filled the pot full of hot water and stirred in a dishwasher soap capsule and left it soak over night. A quick rinse was all it took. I did run a full cycle of water through it clear any soap residue.

Please explain why you're all using paper filters. My mother always used her Farberware Electric percolator basket as is with no filter inserted, as do I. If you're going to use a paper filter, use the natural brown undyed ones. If you're using it to keep the grounds out of your coffee, it's not necessary. Just wet the basket first and carefully fill with coffee grounds. I suppose cleanup might be a tiny bit easier with filters - seems like a waste of money to me.😊

I put the Parts in a bowl with dishwasher soap. And let it sit part of the day. It takes care of it, I use Bar Keepers friend for the inside and rinse well it all looks brand new.

I don't believe this video shows the bottom of the percolator being "submerged". Submerged would be completely IN water....getting sprayed with water is not the same as submerged.

    • @michaelm6948

@@ldlink3935Submerged is the wrong word. The electric element on bottom is not submersible, it will short out. But allowing the very bottom to contact water without submersion will cause the removable screws on the bottom to rust (this is the case with the Presto 12 cup I use).

Just asking': How does a nice person like you manage to get his coffee pot THAT dirty?
I wonder how your method would work if the baking soda and the vinegar were added to the pot at the same time and run through just one cycle.

What if you got the prongs wet while the coffee maker was in the sink? (I'm talking about where the cord connects to the machine)? I feel like I have to be very careful not to get those prongs wet. I don't want a shock! Maybe a stovetop percolator would work better for me.

I just bought a new one today. My old one, (still have and still will keep) the lid accidentally fell on the kitchen floor and broke the glass knob to the lid. On the bottom of that pot there's I can't tell if it's burnt coffee or rust.😕
Its a 6 cup. I've had it for a long time. And used it about a few times. Now its being used daily because our glass coffee pot broke. I will definitely give this a go. Thank you!

First off, I would use 1/4 c LEMON JUICE from the bottle. This is with all coffee makers. Salt can also be used.
I do want to know what the white "calcium" looking stuff is in rhe older perc makers is. It's always in that iron dipped hole area after each use, even after rinsing and drying. Had it everywhere I lived. Is that minerals from the water? It's hard to get rid of it everyday.

You've sprayed WATER over the ELECTRIC contacts on the bottom of your coffee pot!! This is NOT a good idea. Here's a better way. Place one dishwassher packet in the bottom of the pot. In a separate pot, boil water on your stovve. Place your ELECTRIC coffee pot on your counter. Pour the boiling water into it. Cover. Wait thirty minutes and it will be like new. Carefully rinse the inside of your coffee pot.. NEVER run water over the electric contacts on bottom.

LadyJay This may very well be an immersible electric percolator, such percolators have been made by different manufacturers since circa 1960. Even if it is not...as long as he does not immerse the percolator in a sink full of water he will be alright as long as he does not get any water inside the base....if you are worried because he got water on the two prongs where the power cord is plugged into the percolator, as long as he makes sure to dry them off well before plugging in the percolator he will be fine. Actually your idea of using dishwasher detergent is only a good idea if your percolator is stainless steel inside and out. If it is aluminum using dishwasher detergent will darken the color of the aluminum. I speak from 25 years of experience in collecting vintage small appliances, which include various types of coffee makers ranging from the 1930’s through the 1970’s

A novel approach I only have cascade powder here which should suffice. Technically being able to fill the entire percolator and let it sit for 30min is better than using the percolator itself to do the cleaning as it can only soak at the waterline.

Next time when finished let it sit for a while. Also buy some bar keepers friend at hardware store and it will take all that off. It is a non toxic clenser I use to clean up my air fryer of burnt on grease. It comes off like a dream. Also percolated coffee makes better coffee because it boils, drip does not.
