Its sad how very little discussion nintendo's second party devs recieve beyond Gamefreak, alpha dream, and hal labs. Even Inteligent Systems and its chaotic mess of a history recieves little actual discussion.
In a Pokémon review jobs video they show that intelligent systems has an even worse review score compared to GameFreak and its possible they were not a great company even during the paper Mario sticker star days. Most likely crunch culture 😢

@@voltron77 TTYD does make me like the series more in how they handle an original story that isn't ripping off every Final Fantasy or Tales of series stories and basically have that a demon wants to destroy the world and all living things living in Rouge Port and the whole Mario Planet. It's scary to think about and Super Paper Mario had a dark story of starting out with a wedding of all things (which they stolen for a mainland Mario platformer so they knew fam) but yeah Paper Mario 64 is still a nice game to have hope that gets a remake someday
I think these closures are just a natural consequence of portable and console gaming becoming merged. These studios were specialized for developing nicher side games and spin-offs that get shoved on portable systems, and their gameplan they have just kind of falls apart once their projects have to meet console-level expectations. Even primarily-portable studios like Gamefreak that are still around are clearly struggling to adapt to console-level development. I wish the Switch still had a market for smaller scale "spin-off" or "experimental" -type games that made up most of Nintendo's portable libraries (and not charge $50-60 for them), but that's just how it is I suppose.
That's sad and terrifying to see some of the developers of Nintendo going out by business for bankruptcy reasons. I'm a (bit) worried about the future of Nintendo and their studios. God, I hope the developers of Nintendo decides to continue to make awesome games without any deadlines.
While yes these companies had developed software for Nintendo, they were not specifically in-house Nintendo developers. They had close partnerships with Nintendo and were considered second party. So no need to worry about other Nintendo first party studios going bankrupt (such as NDCube or Retro). There was an article a while back that said Nintendo has enough money in their ‘war chest’ that they could lose money and still won’t go bankrupt until 2052.
Even though Alphadream is undoubtedly the most popular out of these three, Vanpool will always hold a special place in my heart for the Tingle games, theyre so unique and odd in the right ways, ill remember those games forever...
I think after Paper Jam, Alphadream should have started working on a Superstar Saga remake for Switch, which would have certainly sold well had it been released in early 2018, where there were barely any first party games to play.
Not exactly the same topic, but the director of the kirby "dark matter trilogy" Shinichi Shimomura, mysteriously disspeared off the face of the earth after kirby nightmare in dreamland, even though pictures of him did evetually surface, they were pre-disappearance, we still have absolutely no clue what happened to him.
I do understand why Nintendo would want to have the 3ds alive in some capacity even when the switch is already well since that console did sell good and not everyone had moved on yet, but having it exclusively to that system wasn’t the brightest idea
I personally think buying Alphadream would've been a stupid decision because that means Nintendo would've become responsible for the massive debt they've accumulated since the early 2010s.

Those are independent companies that were contracted, their own finances are a problem for their own management and not nintendo. their relation is purely business wise between publisher and developer, unlike with a subsidiary where nintendo has more responsibility and control over management
So they shouldn't be blamed for releasing NSMBU Deluxe on the exact same day than Bowser Inside Story remake with much more advertisement, giving direct competition to a secondary studio they fully known was struggling ? I personally like Chibi Robo zip lash. Don’t get me wrong it’s far from perfect and has some really stupid flaws but as a whole, I think it’s just an ok 2D platformer
AlphaDream was my number one favorite, It was a frustrating shame that they went bankrupt. My number one favorite game from them was Mario and Luigi Bowser inside story. Also, today I got a Bowser plush inspired by the game. I miss them big time

People are surprised GameFreak is a second party company but they develop games outside Nintendo. They going to release an M rated mature game by Take Two in the year 2026 which is a year after GTA 6 comes out in 2025 so they wanna make games outside of Pokémon 😅

You probably don't know this: ForwardWorks, the co-developer of Kedama no Gonjiro: Fit and Run with AlphaDream, is a subsidiary of *_Sony of all companies._* So AlphaDream's relationship with Nintendo might have been soured a little bit when they developed that game... though I highly doubt that is one of the main reasons the latter refused to bail out the former.
Yeah I’m aware, I wouldn’t say they worked with Sony out of spite but rather they were looking to be contracted to do work for a game to get out of debt (like with Mario & Sonic)

They even attempted to involve in Mario & Sonic's development just to obtain more cash, but at that time it was too late for them to change their fate. May the company R.I.P. and its developers still involve in the game industry or at least still live well.
They saved themselves with the wii and had it postponed a little by the wii u. But the ps3/xbox 360 gen killed a bunch of studios. The sacrifice that comes with an increase in graphical fidelity was put on hold because the switch is basically a ps3 still, but that is no longer.
i was little and couldnt afford the full game, but i was able to play chibi robo photo finder demo on 3ds and it was low key some of the most creative shit ive ever played. Using real life objects to transport into your game
Nintendo doesn't usually buy out prefers to not buy out studios unless they are being offered directly I suspect. The heads of Next Level games felt it was time to move on during Covid and offered to sell to Nintendo First, Shiver was likely offered by Embracer due to their overexpansion. Nintendo prefers to not buy out partners as it can protect both finacially and the partner keeps their independence. The only time I can think of was when Hal was bailed out in 1999 which lead to Iwata steping up as CEO.
I loved Chibi-Robo: Park Patrol, but I remember receiving it as a kid and being a spoiled, ungrateful brat about it, at least internally. I want Nintendo to bring back the original Chibi-Robo game as a port or something. Please, I want to play it!
And this is just as we watch Nintendo revolutionize into it's own entertainment company, I just wonder if the new Mario movie was just a black sheep considering that doing the literal opposite of current Hollywood by rebooting a cheesy live-action movie as an animated one that felt as if you were almost actually playing the games. The superstar saga remake always made a decent amount of sense to me since you couldn’t play it on the 3DS at all, so having the 3DS version let you play all the games on one system. Who the heck was asking for a remake of BiS on the 3DS in 2019?

I don't know. I am getting Hunger Game vibes from this whole essay. Think about it, Nintendo more or less forces smaller developers to become exclusive to have a HOPE of being acquired but smaller developers NEED to work on as many projects as possible to keep the lights on while Nintendo doesn't let them do that or they more or less cut ties with them. This is VERY Japanese to me. Traditionalist Japanese think Success or Failure exist in a vacuum, and you should always bear the full reasonability for your failures regardless of external factors. I always have to assume that in the absence of proof to something else ALWAYS assume Nintendo is at fault because of their insane ego or toxic philosophies. Their toxicity is the reason they don't dominate the gaming market after all. Just look up their relationship history with SquareEnix and Sony for starters.
Their relationship with Square Enix has been fine. In retrospect the Mario RPG remake shouldn't have been a suprise as Nintendo Publishes at least on Square Enix title a year. Also Sony cut Nintendo a pretty terrible deal with the CD addon.
I dislike Nintendo for being this picky and choosy with which company to bring into their overall company. I mean they could have brought Alpha Dream and now the Mario and Luigi games maybe lost to time forever.

@@INFERNO95 actually they owned 49% of Rare, a strategic stock buying move to make sure they owned as much of the company as possible without legally owning most of the company. Rare was still on top of their game when Microsoft bought them, and Microsoft was only able to buy them because Nintendo didn't. It was only after that that Rare started putting out duds consistently.
So Nintendo didn't buy these studios because they weren't Nintendo enough. That doesn't explain why HAL Laboratory or Intelligent Systems couldn't have done so. Sure, neither of them have nearly as much cash as Nintendo, but surely an offer could have been made.
Buying companies out is not easy. You have pay whatever unpaid bills those companies old and lot of other crap the company bought on themselves. Learn how the business works before talking about crap you know nothing about.
So it may not have been viable for one of Nintendo's second-party studios to buy the entire studio, but what about the assets? Let's use Vanpool, inc. as an example: If Nintendo wasn't interested in buying the Dillon series, is there any reason why HAL Laboratory couldn't have purchased just that?
Nintendo consistently threw chibi robo under the bus. Scott the Woz has a great "dark age of Nintendo" episode regarding how Nintendo treated chibi robo in the west.
The Nintendo DNA thing hurt the most, because Alphadream was, basically, a Nintendo subdivision, because of the IPs Nintendo let them use. maybe I'm missing something though...
Chibi robo plug into adventure is my favorite game, so seeing skip slowly die over the years as nintendo kept screwing them over was really tragic. I'd love to see chibi robo get a real fighting chance to succeed, but i doubt that will ever happen, sadly.

People losing jobs but this time not because the company decided to take all their hard work and kick them out.
I dislike Nintendo for being this picky and choosy with which company to bring into their overall company. I mean they could have brought Alpha Dream and now the Mario and Luigi games maybe lost to time forever.
Nintendo is... basically the antithesis of big tech.
They are very picky cause tgey only buy a company when they are absolutly sure the companies' intermal culture matches thiers.
Its why tgey bought monolith soft after all...

So that's why they're trying to push back interest into Super Mario RPG despite being such a niche game in contrast to how ubiquitous the Mario & Luigi games used to be. That's such a shame
Nintendo should have bought Rare.
They own Rare but sold them off when rare started to go downhill.
@@INFERNO95 actually they owned 49% of Rare, a strategic stock buying move to make sure they owned as much of the company as possible without legally owning most of the company. Rare was still on top of their game when Microsoft bought them, and Microsoft was only able to buy them because Nintendo didn't. It was only after that that Rare started putting out duds consistently.

So Nintendo didn't buy these studios because they weren't Nintendo enough. That doesn't explain why HAL Laboratory or Intelligent Systems couldn't have done so. Sure, neither of them have nearly as much cash as Nintendo, but surely an offer could have been made.

Buying companies out is not easy. You have pay whatever unpaid bills those companies old and lot of other crap the company bought on themselves. Learn how the business works before talking about crap you know nothing about.
So it may not have been viable for one of Nintendo's second-party studios to buy the entire studio, but what about the assets? Let's use Vanpool, inc. as an example: If Nintendo wasn't interested in buying the Dillon series, is there any reason why HAL Laboratory couldn't have purchased just that?

Nintendo consistently threw chibi robo under the bus. Scott the Woz has a great "dark age of Nintendo" episode regarding how Nintendo treated chibi robo in the west.

The Nintendo DNA thing hurt the most, because Alphadream was, basically, a Nintendo subdivision, because of the IPs Nintendo let them use. maybe I'm missing something though...

Chibi robo plug into adventure is my favorite game, so seeing skip slowly die over the years as nintendo kept screwing them over was really tragic. I'd love to see chibi robo get a real fighting chance to succeed, but i doubt that will ever happen, sadly.
Nintendo are coming off as lazy to me they are barley making any games internally anymore and getting third party companies to make games for them
