2020 Skoda Octavia: Here's why it's the best car Skoda build

  • The 2020 Skoda Octavia follows a familiar path to its predecessors in that it's larger than a Volkswagen Golf while also being cheaper to buy. Rebecca Jackson happens to think that it might just be better than a Volkswagen Golf as well. In this CarGurus UK review she explains what makes the 2020 Octavia such a brilliant car.

    The new Octavia. I've seen worst looking cars. I will say it looks Vanilla. Its look doesn't wow you. TBH I prefer the Leon's look. The Practicality scores better with me, loads of room, But that boot I feel there should have been a height adjustable floor. The tech they've added looks great, though it is worth noting that they should have added some logical shortcut buttons, so as to help drivers out, In my opinion its a good car, Not Great, but good.

    Here is the thing... the Octavia is objectively better than a Golf and Is certainly better value ... but having had both a mark 7 and a 7.5 Golf GTI, I would never even consider a change. It is all about what appeals and the Golf is for many folk a more appealing package...hence the residuals.

    • @aakeister
      @aakeister 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It’s a different market segment, golf is too small for my two golden retrievers lol. Golf is fine for short journeys, town work and racing off traffic lights, but for overall use the Octavia is much better

      @douglasb.5601 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used to have a Mk5 Golf gti and then had 2 small boys with prams travel cots etc....I was stuck until I found the Octavia VRS. It was so good I kept it for 8 years with not one problem. I replaced it with a Porsche Macan S diesel which had DPF issues so replaced that with an Audi S3 as I no longer required such a big boot. The quality of the Skoda matched the other 2. I don't think the latest Octavia's are quite as well made or look as good as the MK2 facelift version that I owned. Skoda make great cars though...and I would never put the brand down.

    • @Spartanm333
      @Spartanm333 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have it on reliable information that Skoda engineers were reprimanded and ordered to tone down the Octavia VRS by VAG management a couple of years ago as it was impacting hot Golf sales. The Golf (and Polo GTi) are overpriced and rely on folk who want the badge 'appeal'. That doesn't make it a better package at all - the engines are the same, the infotainment and electronics virtually the same, the options huge on the Octavia range (I have the Winter pack with heated everything, cruise, voice control) and it has a bigger boot and is more practical - how exactly is a Golf a better package?

      I had a 2009 Octavia VRS diesel...amazing car. I much prefered the looks of that generation with the wraparound front lights. I bought it new and kept it for 8 years..not one problem. I replaced it with a Porsche Macan S diesel...lovely car but the DPF caused loads of problems. 😖
      I now drive an Audi S3..much more fun than either...but I miss the Octavia's boot! For a family car I think the Octavia is hard to beat.

      The taillights look a bit off on this model, but overall it looks like a smaller version of Superb. This car is going to be popular company car, not as much as family car because many prefer SUV´s nowadays. This generation Octavia seems like it steers away from being just cheap to buy and cheap to run like previous one that had 1.2tsi later 1.0 engine and manual gearbox as standard with no colour screen and dull gray cloth inside

    Have to say as an owner the car is a pleasure to drive. Comfortable and very quiet. That's the 1.5 petrol manual 6 speed and SE first Edition. Can't say I've noticed any body roll and it runs smoothly round corners feeling very safe and refined.

    • @Spartanm333
      @Spartanm333 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agree - no body roll on my 2018 1.5 TSi SE hatchback. It will understeer in corners if not driven properly - the trick is to go into a corner easy and at the apex feed in the power - the nose will then tuck in and stick like glue, even in the damp.
      However, if you go too fast into a bend on an A road at 50/60 mph and then back off mid bend , the Octavia will understeer to the offside (UK) which may be considered roll but it isn't, it's simply poor driving and the nature of front wheel drive cars designed not to throw the tale out when you cock things up.
      I've come from a 2.0 LTR 150 BHP Subaru Impreza AWD hatchback to the Octavia and I can say it is much more refined - quiet, less engine / tyre / gearbox noise, light gear change, willing turbo with little lag at low revs and love the interior spec including crusie and Apple car play / charging. I have the Winter pack also so heated seats etc .
      It's a lovely car and as we all know, VAG in all important respects... for a lot less money than a Golf or an Audi.

The Lane control is annoying, it should be off and then you can switch it on instead of the other way round. I did speak to the local dealer and he showed me a simple way to switch it off.
    The other thing that annoys me is the electric handbrake when I am going through a car wash. I don’t think you can switch the engine off whilst going through, otherwise the brake comes on! Anyone know any different?

It's also not the no-brainer anymore price wise. It's rather expensive compared to several competitors like the Ford Focus and Renault Megane. Other than that no complaints. "Some people find the large touchscreen distracting to use"?!!!
    It's like using an iPad whilst driving. The most commonly used non-driving controls, ventilation and air-conditioning, which were easy to find 2 rotary knobs with integral buttons, now require sliding your fingers on glass in a sub-menu.
    This seems like an advert rather than a road test, see What Car for a more measured assessment.
    The central armrest is now too low to be of use and doesn't slide.
    I've driven 50,000 miles in pre and post facelift previous versions, the first time I've had the same new car twice running, I am now minded to replace it with a Superbe, which has retains the previous driver's setup.
    It's a shame, as for space, performance, economy, quality, price, plus the ability to park in a smallish space, it's the best car on sale.
    But sometimes small things which are difficult to live with are deal breakers.

    How does a company that makes such cool rally cars :D
    Make such boring commercial cars :(
    "boring" - In the way it Looks, Engine & Sound. Although you can't do much with a diesel.
    Everything else is pretty perfect for the price.

    How tall is she? When she talks about headroom in back seat, I don't think it applies to taller men.

    That thing is so basic and ugly. Looks like it should only serve it's purpose as a rental car or taxi, yuck🤮

    It's actually Škoda not Skoda and I don't care that you don't have it in your keyboard, google and copy required letter!

    Hate these new VAG products and there touch everything layout. Dangerous and a step backwards in quality

    I know it makes no sense for them to do it, but I wish VAG would bring the Skoda brand to North America.

    I drove one recently the headlight comes on automatically which is great at night but and its a big but they should turn off automatically once the engine is turned off which they dont.Its annoying so is the fact that everytime i drove it i had to go into the touchscreen to turn off the lane assist as it keeps making a warning noise on windy roads telling me to stay central on the road.
    Basically lane assist should always be off until a driver decides if they want it on or not.

      But an EV is charged every night, so you start each day with a full range.

      R W a full range of an EV car is always much lower that the one of this model, for example.

    I really like the new 2021 Octavia. Just be aware that rear windscreen wiper is an optional extra on some mk4 vehicles.

    It is very unfortunate that the variable loading floor for the boot is only available in the combi version and not in the coupe style one :/

    Would be great to see you review something a bit more exciting, or both you and Dan do some group tests in performance cars. I hear you're a pretty handy driver but you only ever seem to review the boring stuff. 🏎😁
