    ATTENTION ATTENTION !!! At 4:03 take note of that pin with the spring! You DO NOT have to shave your brakes, when you put the new brakes on, do not connect the spring yet, the drum will not fit over the brakes until you use force and hit that pin up. Make sure all the other springs are on before you hit the pin to help keep the pin up, then connect the spring and BOOOM it fits without shaving

    Great video. Thanks for posting. Just finished my sons brakes today. I did figure out pushing the wedge adjuster up allowed the new drums to slide right on. No other adjustments needed.

    Thank you. Your video guided me through my first shoe replacement. I used a long socket to help seat the two small side springs with the pin. I wasn't able to just push down and twist.

    I wanted to add in there that you forgot to mention that the pin at the end has to be pushed all the way up, I believe it was the last spring you put on. If it’s down the drum will be impossible to put on. I spent about 5 hours losing my mind until I found a separate video that explained it.

      Are you referring to the wedge. That wedge is used to adjust the breaks.

      Leaving it down prevents the automatic adjustment to be done as the pads wear. As there is no more room left for the wedge to go down.

    I want to reiterate what Mr Palmer said below. You will not have to sand the shoes if you push the adjusting wedge up before you replace the drum.

    Thanks for the video very easy to follow. I just have a question. I don’t see you replace the rooter. You reused the old rooters. How you know if you need o not to replace the rooters too??? Thanks

    Do not adjust the handbrake cables, unless the cables have been replaced.
    This adjustment is only to take up differences in the cables and their mountings, to set the correct free play in the handbrake lever.
    The adjustment of the handbrake after brakes service is simply using the footbrake and the handbrake.
    The auto adjusters takes care of the rest.

    15:27 that pin s your selfadjuster. You want to leave that up high as much as posible or you drum wont fitting in as easy.. with the wear of you shoes that pin wil slowly go down. I just had one of those cars.The owner of car pretended to do it himself🤬 n left the springtensioner all a mess up. So I had to do some research. The car is all done now but I'm still looking for easy ways. Great job man you have strong hands. I use cutter pliers to get those springs out I see you using a flat screw driver and fingers You make look so easy.. thnks for the video.

    With new shoes you start with the Adjuster-Pin set at the highest position, then drum should barely go on.....if not, then slowly work the wedge down till the drum is just scraping the shoes when installing the drum.......Sometimes I replace that Adjuster-Spring with a shorter, more stronger spring to ensure the Adjuster-Wedge doesn't get lazy and hung-up in the course operating the brakes over time.... To adjust the Wedge once the drum is installed, you put a screw-driver through the wheel lug hole to adjust the wedge correctly... If the wedge is all-the-way down and you still do not have shoe contact with the drums, then it's time for new drums, since the old drums wore down ...

    First where's the safety stand? If you would have slid the emergency brake adjuster up the (drum) would have gone right on. Really dangerous using a pic and screwdriver.

    How much did you have to sand your brakes before the rotor would go on like it did? A measurable amount?

      Its took 12mins of sanding the aftermarket ones come slightly thicker

      You do not need to sand them down at all. Inside the center console under the arm rest there is a plastic square cover that you can pop out with your fingers. Under it is the parking brake adjustment. It is a 10mm, loosen it up and the drum will be able to go back on with no problem. Once that is done, tighten the parking brake back up

      Yes you are correct, but thats only if you purchase the oem brand. If you buy aftermarket shoe than you would need to sand down

      Jabo The Mechanic sorry to say but you are wrong and don’t have to same at all. There is an adjuster that is supposed to be slid up when replacing rear shoes . That way the drum will slide right on no problem . That was your problem

    Wow.. That's dangerous to remove tight spring. Just remove the steady pins and take the whole shoe assy off in one go. Rebuild on the bench.. Safely

    the adjuster wedge need to go all the way up. it a self adjusting mechanism. you dont have to sand the shoe.

    Really wanna see a rear drums to disc brake conversion for the 2011 Jetta so I can make the attempt on mine haha

      Dont think its possible as the rear supension arm would not have mountings for a brake caliper and the mating mud guard plate.
      You'll need a new complete compund axle prepared for caliper fitting.
      Quite a project.

      CXensation is that so? I’ve read on the forums that it was done with either swapping an IRS or just swapping the brakes and a couple lines but I wasn’t able to view the pictures to it

      Then you should collect the disc brakes parts and go ahead, why wait to see someoneelse do it ?

      CXensation honestly kinda worried I might mess up maybe if it was my project car but this ones my daily so I’m kinda sketched to try it out. I seen the thread somewhere on vwvortex.com about mk6 drums to disc and in the thread I seen compatible parts from other models. I even got the parts too but still kinda worried to attempt the swap

      @@JaboTheMechanic do you have any idea what torx bit is needed? I saw it had one on be back. I just bought new cylinder and it didnt come with new bolt so I can tell if I have the correct size now without taking the wheel off again. And risk not having the right one then having to put wheel back on and limp too the store haha

      I only want to replace the cylinder, would this be possible without taking the shoes out? I'm thinking if I disconnect the brake line I'll be able to squeeze the old one out of the shoes.. but will the shoes have enough tension to close up causing it too be very difficult to put new cylinder in? I've never worked on drums before. And it pissed me off VW used them on mk6 Jetta lol

    You should delete this video. It is very inaccurate. Insisting that people should sand the shoe is terrible advice. As mentioned before if you had the adjuster all the way up you wouldn't have this issue.
