    I really appreciate how much this video helped me. Just unfortunate that I had to go back and rewatch clips a thousand times because I couldn’t see what he was talking about. And you had a MUCH easier time with putting it back together than I.

      I cannot believe that you dead a$$ said after putting the shoes on that you have to NOT put on the spring.. dude it took me an hour to put that spring on. And it took me two just to set the shoes on properly.. then you say I shouldn’t do that?????

    I agree with all the others that side cutters are NOT the hot ticket for spring removal. My go to has always been needlenose vise grips. side cutters will crimp the metal and you don't want it to be weak and break...

    As others have commented the side cutters are not a great idea. Spring pliers are the better option.
    The bigger issue is you're much less likely to damage your springs or shoes if you put that big Spring on before you side then in, not after.
    You don't need the big Spring off to adjust at all. Just stick a screwdriver between the spreader bar and the metal edge of the shoe. A tiny pry and you'll have surgeon like control of that wedge going down. If you go too far, pop it up.
    If your wedge is all the way down and you're still barely grabbing then your emergency brake cable is either worn out or out of adjustment. Tighten that up then check your wedge. They work in unison and accomplish a similar task.

      The screwdriver trick only works if you have the spring pulling the wedge down attached.

    Near the end of the video, he says to make sure that teardrop shape adjuster is pulled all the way down, but that caused us problems. When that adjuster is all the way down, the brake is expanded at it's largest and you can't get the drum on without damaging the brake shoe. Really you should have that adjuster moved up as high as it will go and then the drum will slide on with no trouble, not a tight fit at all.

    My brakes have been screaming lately, once and a while you need to renew the spring set as the old ones lose their strength.
    Now with my new brakes i ordered an Adelco spring set.
    Ive also ordered brake shoes from Bosh as i wont be changing my brakes with the Volkswagen dealership, they ripped me off last maintenance and not only they installed cheap Chinese brake shoes but on the brake flush that was on the planned maintenance i got air in my brake lines, i lost all brakes lucky no traffic and could slow down and stop using engine brake force before serious accident happened.
    Upon inspecting the issue by my insurance they found out;
    1) brake flush was not done properly as the brake lines where still filled with old dirty brake fluid but only the reservoir was emptied and might have caused air in the system by doing so.
    2) the brake shoes they installed where not complaint, cheap knockoffs and if proper ones had be installed i should not have lost all my braking power.

    Excellent video, I would not use side cutters to hold springs or cables and you are creating a stress concentrating deformation on the surface. Otherwise, very helpful. Thanks.

      Exactly. I cringed at that. He should’ve used pliers

    I had to do this last year, but since my parking brake doesn't hold at all. I just pulled the wheel off and checked everything, springs are in good condition and shoes look good, but I'm still not getting the brakes to hold. The wheel cylinder popped apart when I was trying to adjust it, and now I have weak brakes all around. Do you have any idea as to what I should look for to fix?
