Here's the thing...a long hang dry with limited but present moisture will allow microbes to break down sugars which makes for a tastier product. Some cultivars are delicious fresh while others require that breakdown process before developing its good flavors. These would be a poor choice for freeze drying.
Good insight. I'm currently looking at several moisture capturing alternatives for curing processes that involve freezing. One involves layering salt that is separated from the buds. Recirculating air. The other is by using a highly pure alcohol in order to capture the moisture.
Another excellent intro video. From experience I can say for those growing cannabis to make solventless concentrates (via bubble hash): if you wash either freshly frozen bud or freeze dry fresh bud then wash it, the amount of green in the final product is far higher than if the bud is hung conventionally for 7-10 days first. The commercial companies push “Fresh Rosin”, which I imagine is pretty green stuff that they simply whiten to a lighter color, if they do indeed collect it from freshly frozen bud. The yield is higher for previously hung bud. You also need a pharmaceutical freeze drier with skinny shelf spaces for better temp control to do this correctly.
@@ModernFitTrader I suspect they use bleaching or other similar chemical process. I’ve smoked freshly freeze dried bud and it’s ok but prefer conventionally cured cannabis for smoking.
It’s called CRC, (Color Remediation Column). People can press nasty shwag and manipulate the color and even take terps extracted from other higher grade product and manipulate the flavors. If you’re not pressing your own rosin then no one knows.
Nobody takes hash rosin and puts it through CRC, that’s part of the closed loop hydrocarbon extraction process, hash rosin is pressed from hash and goes into a jar to cure and then you buy it.
I did this one year by mistake here in Canada. After October here weather get real cold real fast here, forgot half pound of bud still hanging on branches till the next march. Spring we smoked it we found defiantly tasted better but also smother than bottle curing batch of same weed.

I have a couple reservations and questions if you know the answer. One of the key goals of the drying and curing process is the breakdown of chlorophyll and the post harvest metabolic conversion of CBG to THC etc... Generally, If you dry to quickly, or overdry, you prevent these processes from taking place, resulting in a flower isn't technically cured, just dried. So it seems to me freeze drying is just a method to rapidly dry cannabis without using high heat, but if true it stands to reason that just as above, it would stop the curing processes dead in their tracks resulting in a product that would be harsh to smoke and would have a grassy hay flavour (and potentially higher levels of CBG at the expense of other metabolites such as THC). Is there some aspect of the process that somehow addresses these issues?

Reaching out to a professional company would be best as many systems are available so each will follow the same basic concept, but each will have its small details which are key to follow for a quality end product.
@@Pdbottleneck some terpenes are partially water soluble and considering that we're talking about very small quantities of terpenes in comparison to the water removed, there is no practical way of removing them from the collected water. Heating the water as through distillation to remove the terpenes works however most of the terpenes are extremely vulnerable to degradation and reaction with other terpenes, often forming foul smelling oils that need to be post processed in order to have anything resembling a usable product. An extremely volatile non-polar solvent (methylene chloride, ether) can be used to collect the terpenes from the water, which would then need to be stripped from the terpenes which would also risk losing the more volatile terpenes, and you would have to contend with residual solvents. This video is full of information that the presenter appears to poorly understand. He said the standard drying conditions are 45-55% humidity and I don't know anyone drying at that humidity except maybe outdoor CBD hemp biomass producers.

I'm missing something I think. You said home growers can do this at home also. But how can I get the temp down that low without some laboratory equipment?
My family lived in the Emerald triangle And grew and produce, Outdoor, dry naturally, Not like a lot of people are doing in the Emerald triangle today indoor it's not the same, Are we grow outdoor dry naturally at a better THC content and a better CBD content, And there was never a complaint you could roll a penner and smoke it between 5 people and they would all get ripped for 2 hours or more now adays the stuff they sell in the shops is it disgrace to cannabis because of regulations, But maybe as time goes on we'll be able to start growing it the way we used to And not only bring the CBD content up but also a lot higher quality THC, Because we've already grown the best cannabis in the world in America years ago and there are some people out there that are still doing it, But 80% of it is turned pot into commercialized whatever you want to call it very disappointing.
But doesn't thc separate and fall off when you freeze it? I know if you put flowers in the freezer and shake it all the keif falls right off so I just feel like you would lose something

Also it was cut directly from the plant and put into the dryer so who is there no smell on my end product even smelling like HEY
You don't want to hang dry your plants in 45% relative humidity. You want to target 60/60. 60 degree's and 60% relative humidity. You want your flower at the end process to be 60% moisture. So if you are drying in 45% your flower will be 45% therefore being to dry. Obviously you can try to time it and take it out and jar it before it reaches 45% humidity but why risk it? Also it causes it to dry faster making it a more harsh smoke. If your dry tent is 60% relative humidity you can leave your plant in there for however long you want and it will stay 60%. If you have it at 45% and you leave it in there to long it can over dry. This is just my personal experience from what I've obtained by growing over a thousand plants. I could be wrong.
The -40 to -80F is the ideal for long term preservation of biological tissue (most commonly used in research science labs). However, it can be costly and difficult to achieve this temperature range, but if possible this would be the ideal.

maybe im slow but do you do a regular dry first and then for curing freeze them in vacuum bag and then say after a day in freezer how do you thraw them with damage and i know when bud freezes its very easy to loose trichomes so there must be way to gently bring back to room temp. and i dont grow no more but still find interesting and when i did grow how i dried and cured worked far as taste but no super loud smell or cheese smell what and how do they get that smell and i know its also a genetic thing too some people say well if temp over 26c its ruins terps well i use to get dank smelling Mexican skunk that came from Oahakan Mexico and its hot here and back then there was no indoor growing over there some did do green house . and will add they had there version of skunk 1 back then but how do they get dank smelling stuff there has to be something else to it . and when using this freeze dry cure method does it have dank smell
People are different, but sometimes people just do things wrong. It's grassy if you do it wrong, just like any other traditional curing method. It's a different high because it has higher amount of active compounds and THC without converting into CBN (So by different you actually mean stronger), 95-99% preservation vs 50-80% for traditional hang drying. If you want a less intense stonier high from FD'd bud, just allow a higher percentage of your trichomes to turn amber before harvesting, that way you don't have to degrade as much of the active compounds to get the extra CBN. Bring the moisture content lower, it should be 5% moisture in total including stems and the centre of dense buds and let them redistribute the remaining moisture evenly throughout. After 4 hours you can then rehydrate to 8-12% moisture depending on personal preference. If most of the moisture isn't removed first you will still have to jar cure for longer as the chlorophyll will still be present, which will taste green. Just like hang drying/jar curing done wrong.
@@DeBaccoUniversity even if you remove water content you still have a cure period to let the cannabinoid profile build for more of the acids to convert into more active-able compounds right? the other question is if the freeze dry preservers everything you would still have to wait for the chlorophyll to break down after removing moisture. the main benefit i see from this is you can obtain the more volatile terps typically lost on dry.
@@DeBaccoUniversity they were asking if the chlorophyll is broken down/removed during sublimation. They also mean that drying and curing are two different phases. I'm pretty sure technically they are the same but they are broken down into separate phases. If you could provide an answer I would appreciate it because I was wondering this myself. If chlorophyll isn't removed during freeze drying process then I would assume you'd still have to jar them. I've tried to find info online regarding this but can't find anything.

Is it possible to do it with dry ice in a sealed thermic container?
Not well.
Can you eat it though is my question instead of decarbing regular buds. Does this make it edible if done properly?
The flower is basically fresh frozen so what ever you can do with a regular dry flower you can do with a freeze dried one.

hello, I am looking for the settings during the different processes of freeze drying cannabis flowers, I am doing a test soon but I have only one chance. I take all the advice, thanking you for reading me. cordially
While not sponsored by them, you can check out the Cryo Cure website FAQ page.
I’d like to see a combination
Regular dry then freeze dry and vacuum seal
Interesting idea.
Awesome!
Thank you, man
Thanks for the supportive comment!
How long is the temperature raised to the 70-80 degree temperature? I see you say bellow -40 for 10hrs.
The 70-80 temperature is the holding temperature before the process is started and should be minimal duration to increase overall processing efficiency.
So it's sort of a lyopholization process where the moisture is withdrawn, separated and contained?
It certainly produces a unique end product.
Very interesting
Glad you think so!
Can the home grower do this in a home freezer without having to buy additional equipment?
Unfortunately... no.
Thanks for the information, definetly gonna apply a few things from here.
It is always great to know that the information presented here is actually being applied by people watching.
I am curious why you recommend 45-55% for hang dry if monolayer formation is higher?
Current trend is to favor a little higher and aim for 60% humidity when drying.
@@DeBaccoUniversity gotcha! Much appreciated.
great explanation!
Glad it was helpful!
The thing is tho when you flash freeze your contracting and expanding all the trichromes on the plant which break when you do this causing it to at best lose potency at most cause a headache
This method is best used for flowers that will go to extraction.
Always wondered what the results would be. Thanks for the info
Glad to be able to provide the content to you and others!
I like grove bags.😊😊
Thanks for sharing.
Forget that i put a cured bud in and it tasted cleaner for sure, the high was wnhanced lasted for hours, defoo increase potency some how
Maybe due to it being more concentrated?
? When you freeze dry do you take it out trim and it goes right into the jar and then you start your burping process?? ❓
Typically trimmed and then freeze dried as this essentially pauses time and stops degradation.
I'm missing something I think. You said home growers can do this at home also. But how can I get the temp down that low without some laboratory equipment?
It is possible to be done at home with the proper equipment. Example... harvestright.com/product/home-freeze-dryer/

Mmmmm
What if I just use a box put dry ice in it, put the Cannabis in a Jar and put it into the box? Without any pressure.
The end result will not be the same.
Listen to this...! Not new ,but it's toptop
Thanks for the comment.
Not sure this hold true... "we've already grown the best cannabis in the world in America years ago"
But doesn't thc separate and fall off when you freeze it? I know if you put flowers in the freezer and shake it all the keif falls right off so I just feel like you would lose something
Regular freezer is different than freeze drying, no harm with this method.
DeBaccod again drats!
Thanks, glad you liked the video.
This is the best weed. It crumbles though, not the best smokability but it enhances the THC to like 200% I got some and it is the craziest thing on earth it felt like heaven, my eyes became glazed over in a white heaven like space taking me to the happiest place I have ever been. I am not sure how or why it cures the way it does but its awesome. This is just my experience with freeze dried weed result will very.
Thanks for sharing your experience.
Ive been curing in fridge for a long while and im here trying to find a better cure process
This one is very specialized, but there are other helpful videos on the channel.
But what happens with chlorophyll? To my understanding it all stays in the bud when it is freeze dried.
This helps preserve the flower for extraction later with no loss of quality.
@@DeBaccoUniversity But vaping the bud would be horrible.
Hello, when I use the harvest right freeze dryer my end product looked beautiful as it did when on the plant but it didn’t have the dank smell as it did when it was on the live plant. Also it was cut directly from the plant and put into the dryer so who is there no smell on my end product even smelling like HEY
The smell is the plant giving off a substance, this method condenses and preserves the compounds so there will be less "as is" smell until utilized.
@@DeBaccoUniversity so you saying I should give it a try and smoke it because it’s been curing since before I made the comment
So, I can't use my normal freezer?
You are correct.
thank you for sharing your information! Can anyone tell me where I can buy this equipment.
Can be cost prohibitive, but check the sources in the description.
You slowed down on your uploads. Reason why ?
Just time;-) There are a few more planned so thanks for your patience (and subscription;-)
Awesome! I’m gonna try both so I can have some quick smoke 💨

@@DeBaccoUniversity they are actually very expensive I guess Ile stick to the old school way
Super thanks
You are welcome!
How is this a home-grower method when the cheapest machine costs $2000? Am I missing something.
This channel focuses on the industry practices, some are only feasible at scale, but sometimes the "best" costs the most.
Still a very new thing here in South Africa, haven’t actually had any freeze dried buds
There is specialized equipment required.
Wait till you try skittles in it!
Thanks for your videos!

Thanks for sharing, there are two schools of thought, however the trend is toward the 60F/60% humidity being more favorable.
Cryo cure specializes in the freeze drying of cannabis and they suggest -20 to -30°f so why are you suggesting -40 to -80??
The -40 to -80F is the ideal for long term preservation of biological tissue (most commonly used in research science labs). However, it can be costly and difficult to achieve this temperature range, but if possible this would be the ideal.
@@DeBaccoUniversity what would be your recommended freeze and dry time?? If you can make another video diving deep into the science that would actually be very helpful. it's been hard to find a reliable or decent source of constant information when it comes to freeze drying.
I've just had some flower thats been thru this process here in the UK on medical. Its some of the worst flower ive ever had. No hyperbole. Its vile.
This is best for flower that is going to go to extraction.
I knew you could do this.
It is very effective, but cost prohibitive on a small scale.
Just say no to freeze dried flowers, unless it is for concentrate purposes.
Nothing will beat a proper tried and true slow dry and cure
Depends on your target end product.
can I freeze in my regular freezer?
In short... no.
maybe im slow but do you do a regular dry first and then for curing freeze them in vacuum bag and then say after a day in freezer how do you thraw them with damage and i know when bud freezes its very easy to loose trichomes so there must be way to gently bring back to room temp. and i dont grow no more but still find interesting and when i did grow how i dried and cured worked far as taste but no super loud smell or cheese smell what and how do they get that smell and i know its also a genetic thing too some people say well if temp over 26c its ruins terps well i use to get dank smelling Mexican skunk that came from Oahakan Mexico and its hot here and back then there was no indoor growing over there some did do green house . and will add they had there version of skunk 1 back then but how do they get dank smelling stuff there has to be something else to it . and when using this freeze dry cure method does it have dank smell
This should help provide more detailed description for you... www.theoriginalresinator.com/freeze-drying-crop-to-cure/
@@DeBaccoUniversity what a great way, to answer a long an detailed question.
Hi guys is an normal fruit freeze dryer good?
It would come down to the temperatures it can achieve.
Can u show the process next time
Difficult to film, but thanks for the suggestion.
So what is the difference between a normal freeze dryer and cryocure?
Same category, just want to check and compare actual temperatures.
it taste grassy, it's a almost different high, leave it the old fashioned way with jars IMO,but hey people are different you do you
Good to know what options exist.
Its possible to keep that from happening, basically you still have to cure it for two weeks in jars with boveda packs afterward
dry and cure different terms no if nothing is breaking down you should have all the chlorophyll no?
Not sure what you are asking?
@@brandondumont7223 I didn't see that you already replied 🤦🏻♂️
Hopefully we can get an answer because this has been bugging me
True freeze drying process will retain more chlorophyll. For details check out this study... www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0095955315333023
Will it work in a Normal freezer
Typically freezing temperatures are between −50 °C (−58 °F) and −80 °C (−112 °F), so not a normal freezer.
@@DeBaccoUniversity Thanks man
so what would happen to the weed if it melted from frozen? i
Should be the same as before it was frozen.
It’s structure goes back to normal, fluffy buds. I’ve got buds out of the freezer and within 10-15 mins of an Australian summer it was ready. The weed thaws out quite quick considering. No terpene loss. No flavour loss. No trichome loss. I smoked bud that had been frozen for 3 years and whilst it wasn’t the strongest, it certainly did the job and had effect. It’s amazing because before this time a few years ago I would’ve laughed at frozen weed. But it’s legit, it works fine and probably is the best storage place if you’re not digging into it constantly to smoke.
@@juggernautproduktion freeze drying is not the same as freezing your regularly dried bud. Freeze dried is like how they make astronaut food, just freezing it is normal and fine, freeze drying is so,thing you can't do with just a freezer
i think that method is like 10.000 bc ... freeze dried meat has been around for a while
Good point.
Can you use co2?
CO2 during the plant growing process... yes.
I’m wondering the same. Thinking about putting a vacuum in the freezer and purging air/cycling as well as cooling with co2(or dry ice).
Drying or curing ???
Technically both.
For commercial sellers wouldn’t the drastic weight difference be an issue since it is sold by weight? FD food weighs about 3/4ths it’s original weight.
Weight is reduced, but the price is adjusted accordingly;-)
people who curing thc weed sholdn't do freezing before end of drying of
buds
Is this only for THC?
what about chlorofil?
Not sure how this liquid product applies to dry flower?
@@DeBaccoUniversity ii mean taar taste and chlorophil to be degraded duringng curing process.. here there is no such so what about taste of such cannabis bud that was just freeze dry cured.. i understand to do it with hash but flowers?
was excited but damn its expensive
Cost prohibitive for many, but still interesting to know about.
dude those are $3k bucks. It better make my weed conjure Margot Robbie in a bathing suit and produce gold as a by-product
Cost is in part dependent on scale of the operation.
Freezing bud makes it brittle. Your theory is mental.
But it can be preserved for a long period of time.
Im drying on 10 celcius and its fine
Thanks for sharing!
what about the clorophyl? :0
Still present, but allows for a delay in the extraction process with minimal loss of quality of the material.
To me it looks like there's way too much chlorophyll in there, you don't want to smoke something like that. Nothing beats fermenting for a long, long, long time
But this can preserve the terpenes.
You are wrong, because the enzymes in the weed, break down the chlorophyll in about 4 hours, after drying.
Did you used to be a weather man 🤔
Maybe... what area are you from?
normal dry and curing = taste... Freeze dry = no taste, and buds full green and chlorophyl. just for industry, not for real smokers.
Advantage is also long term storage with freeze dry.
Probably just bad recipe or bad freeze dryer.
More electricity/energy Bigger Footprint.
But longer term storage.
wait so it had to be -40f to do this? u cant do this in ur regular freezer? lol
Has to be -40F or colder, so you need a special freezer for this process.
@@DeBaccoUniversity -40°C has to be on condenser to catch water. Product itself needs about -25°C.
