Post-flooding Yellowstone Rockhounding Billings, Montana 2022

- I am off on my first summer season post-flooding rockhounding adventure in Billings, MT. The rafting was excellent, the company...even better. While I did find some nice rocks, most of the mud-covered gravel beds performed slightly lower than my high expectations. However, after a few rains come through I think we will be in good shape!
Looking to learn about Yellowstone River agates? This is a publication from 1972 by a man named Paul Fry. This was the very first literature I read when I was learning about Montana agates. It is called "Meanderings of a Montana Rockhound" and it is priceless:

For all those asking, I do not sell my rocks. As my supply permits, I do rock trades. So, if you have some nice specimens you think I would like to add to my collection, we can trade via any size flat rate post office box. Man what a dream place that is!! I wouldn't know when to quit!! And I wouldn't be able to walk out from there that's for sure! You'd have to float my rocks and me out on a barge!! What a place. That jasper was my favorite find of the day!!! I should have rinsed it off better. It has several quartz pockets with yellow agate banding around them, just incredible!
That green is a real beauty. The last green I found and thought was jasper turned out to be a gorgeous deep green agate on closer inspection. What a thrill!

Such a wonderful day back on the yellowstone. Want to kayak and hunt beauties too. Our local rivers have sand bars. Going rocking in U.P. this fall. Planning and packing my tools/backpack. Maybe a day at Lake Michigan. Ohh...soooo...green!!! So glad the river is safe finally.
The jaspers look so southwestern in color and that agate at 9:20 is so defined. "I'm going to cut it", if rocks could hear, I bet that rock was terrified. Glad your back Kim.
Looking for rocks is one of my favorite past-times! We drive all over the place just to find different and unique minerals and artifacts!

Yellowstone, found a beautiful green color agate, nice petrified wood, and awesome color Jasper. I has so much fun . My car is full of Montana rocks. Heading home to Wisconsin.

So glad to see you back! Was getting worried.
When I was a kid out hiking with my grandmother on the north fork of the Clearwater river prior to Dworshak dam going in, we found a 2 pound garnet. We had it cut. It produced 7 - clear garnet stones and one middle cut almost 200 carrot it has a 1 centimeter liquid center. Its probably one of a kind. I live on the central Oregon coast now, when ever I see a big agate I am careful to not cut into the heart of the stone in hopes of finding another liquid center.

I really love your videos! Rockhounding and deep sea dive videos are some of my favorite things to watch. And that agate at 8:00 totally reminded me of a deep sea creature I saw the other day on a live dive feed! Those vibrantly colored jaspers were also amazing. Thank you so much for taking us along.

Yay!! Kim's back!! Glad to see you're doing ok. Looks like that was a great day on the river, as always. That weird one with the green nodules looks like it might be some sort of volcanic ejecta (I love that word). Altered tuff (there's a word for that I can't remember) with chlorinated silica vesicles, similar to galaxy stone. Or something else completely.😁 Love to see it when you cut it open.

I want to Rockhound this area so badly. Such a beautiful place to go discovering and with the recent floods its unveiled so many wonderful gems. Between you, KatyDid, and Theo, those finds would be a highlight in our rockhounding career. Great job, love the video and thank you for sharing. 2:30 chalcedony is amazing and 4:38 blue agate, such an amazing color. 6:11 just speechless, that has to weigh at least 8lbs!!! 7:57 banded blue chalcedony, just amazing, i couldn't ask for a more amazing day of rockhounding.

Welcome back, Kim! Missed you! The piece of pet wood with the holes I would bet had boring snails in it at one time. It looks just like the driftwood here in FL with them.

We had a nice breeze going so luckily the bugs weren't too bad. Usually it's those dark black flies that drive me insane- those bites hurt! I had a full bottle of 100% deet just in case!

@@MontanaRockMom oh yeah you gotta get further west over near cle elum find that elusive Ellensburg blue. On west side of the mountains we have red and carnelian agates as well as purple amethyst
@@nicholasnewton6775 a nice purple amethyst would be on my list 💜💜💜 ... one day I'd like to hunt the lava fields outside of the Columbia basin flow...maybe find some vugs filled with crystals 💎💎💎 (on my bucket list for a find)

I am starting on a quest to collect all the different aventurine colors we have here. So far I have been told there is aqua-green, blue, peach and strawberry!

Hello MRM, well what a day you have had, a bit of fun on the river, a couple of stones, watched a couple of floaters go by 😜 and a few more stones.
Ok, that first jasper was a killer piece, then some more nice pieces, then that green, Jasper, then a petrified wood, then those yellow & red jaspers at the end, just stunning. It is amazing to me to so many different varieties & colours in the one place, you a very lucky to have access to so much beautiful material. ( yes, I’m damn jealous) 😂😂. Another great video, even if it left me a bit envious. Looks like you had a great day Kim.

Thanks Kim, you have inspired me to rockhound some of the ancient rivers in the montains not too far from where I live in Australia. not sure what I'll find but enthusiastic to give it a go and I'l be taking a squirt bottle, at least I don't have to worry about bears!
Have some wonderful adventures! The water bottle is so helpful, especially when you are just starting out....there's so much beauty underneath the layer of dirt, even if you have no idea what you're looking at! Nature's art always brings a smile to my face 😊
