  • “The guitar was like a language, each chord was like a sentence, each part was a paragraph or a chapter, and then you could create a whole story, and I became obsessed." Watch Tim McIlrath of Rise Against dive into his creative process and why he’s always played with Ernie Ball strings.

    I've always loved that riff for Survive at 2:46. He plays it so clean, I just can't figure it out how to do it (I know it's not that difficult).

      You just have to tell your wrist to be loose.
      Easier said than done, but that's the way to do it. Any tension at all and you're going to mess it up every time.
      Also, a light pick helps quite a bit. Looks like he's using a Tortex 0.50mm.

    • @crizzzzzzzzzzzzzz537
      @crizzzzzzzzzzzzzz537 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@royalcat10 he is using the orange tortex 0.60

    • @martinfanatic532
      @martinfanatic532 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know...I've always struggled with this riff because I find it difficult to keep your wrist and forearm relaxed while maintaining a firm grip on the pick. I normally use a primetone 1.4mm because for me it's the easiest to maintain a solid grip on. But it's way too stiff for a fast riff like this. I've tried the same tortex 0.60 Tim is using in the vid but they just fly out of my hands.

    I love his college professor analogy. I'm working on my PhD in science and am aspiring to be a professor some day, to teach and to do research. There's a big push these days in research to make huge discoveries and to change the world. But you can't always do that, not everybody can change the world. That's one of my biggest lessons from my 5 years in graduate school. Sometimes you just need to step back and look at the basics, look at things from a fundamental point of view. Small steps can build up. Thanks for the inspiring words Tim. Rise Against has always been a huge source of inspiration and comfort for me.

    I first heard rise against when I was 6 or 7 years old, my brother was playing Tony Hawks underground and I heard like the angel come on and that intro bass riff followed by tims vocals just blew my mind. My first pack of strings was a pack of regular slinky strings and I remember looking at the back of the packaging and seeing bands I loved like rise against, Afi, green day, incubus and so many other bands I knew these were the strings for me

    In my opinion I think Tim is more of a poet/lyricist than a musician. I love every single RA song, and he's a great musician, don't get me wrong. But I was drawn to his music mostly because of what he writes, and the language he uses to communicate through music. I just think that Tim is cut from his own bark, and just being labelled a musician is not enough to describe him.

    • @cptKamina
      @cptKamina 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      He, more than any musician I can think of, embodies the Idea that music is modern poetry. Somy lyrics of his can be compared to the most famous poets and look good.

      Jorgeä Baezp well, I love it. It's the punk rock sound, it's raw, aggressive and intense. I understand why you think it's bad, but that's the exact reason why it's so good.

    • @jorgeabaezp9365
      @jorgeabaezp9365 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      dfp327 also. Maybe it's just the mic the might be using. Chances are we are getting the camera audio and not the whole thing. After all, and like i said, in their recordings it does not sound like it. I also know that sometimes, in some tube amps, if they're hi watt and you run em at lo volume and that much gain you get fizziness. Dunno

    • @Dany-uw9hf
      @Dany-uw9hf 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The tone is the typical Rise Against Marshall tone they've been using since The Sufferer. Here he's going through what looks like a 1x12 Orange cab miced with a 57

    • @dfp327
      @dfp327 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Jorgeä Baezp yes, he is probably using the amp at a really low volume, since he's home, and as pointed above, it's a small cab. But besides that, the tone is pretty close to what he actually sounds live, which is really fizzy. But fizzy does not mean bad. If you listen to most punk rock albums from the 80's and 90's, the guitar sound is fizzy, and since those are some of Tim's biggest influences, he probably seek for this kind of tone.

      @benweinberg3819 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've not once put on a sweatshirt and had the drawstrings line up perfectly, first go. Honestly, it's probably MORE pretend-to-be cool having to fiddle with them and crease them all the way around the hood lining just to line up because you're worried people WON'T think you're trying to have uneven strings...
