Good to see a distance musher with this philosophy. We free run in the summer and keep the dogs conditioned too it helps significantly and like you said strengthens the tendons and ligaments and gives them a foundation. All world class athletes train year round. We've had almost zero injuries during the snow season after we started training free running. Thanks for sharing!

Just watched the entire 5-part series and I'm hooked to learn more! So impressive. I started following you from Cory/Dude Like Hella a few months back and have really enjoyed learning about your sport! Keep up the great work and CONGRATS!

I was always interested in sled dog racing as a kid after reading a book on it, must have been in 2nd or 3rd grade. Enjoyed watching the NatGeo Survival Alaska show and seeing you and your brother and then finding out a bit about your story I really got into the 2014 Iditarod and then again the 2015 Iditarod. I've enjoyed watching a learning all about mushing and racing dogs from many different people but it's always cool to see info from and on your favorite musher. It sure seems like you are a well rounded man with a firm family foundation dedicated to your job and your passion. It's easy to say your are my favorite to follow...Good Luck hitting the upcoming training season and I look forward to seeing you race again! (Maybe someday I'll get my wife an daughter up to see an Iditarod start!)
Just to inquire...are you planning on running any other races or are you strictly focusing in on Iditarod from here on out? And also what is the best way to follow each race?

The idea is great to extend the training season and keep dogs in shape and develop younger dogs at the same time. Extended training means dogs will adapt easier once racing season begins which makes a lot of sense. My problem.... this is great for your set up.....now what to do for the every day Joe.........

Silvia Washington There are a lot of ways to keep your dogs active in the summer. Just like what dog food to feed every musher is going to pick the one that works best for their team. My hope is that it will encourage more teams to do more training/exercising with their teams in the off season.

How do you keep your dog's houses (barrels) from tipping over & getting dragged around the kennel?

42TRGSako we have about 300 lbs of sand in the bottom of the house and then straw on top of that. some of the big dogs do move the houses a bit.

These are athlete dogs, and live in worse conditions than dogs in shelters. How can you keep dogs so unacceptable in any other country, only in Alaska. I'm surprised that so few people are interested in the fate of these dog athletes???

it's in the mushers best interest to keep the dogs happy, healthy, and well taken care of. the guy clearly cares a lot about his dogs, and the dogs seem happy and very healthy.
