    Mushers must wear a numbered bib for identification and carry the following supplies on the sled:a proper cold weather sleeping bag weighing a minimum of five pounds;an ax, head to weigh a minimum of 1.75 pounds and handle to be at least 22 inches long;one pair of snow shoes with bindings, each shoe to be at least 252 square inches in size;promotional material provided by the ITC;eight booties for each dog in the sled or in use;one operational cooker and pot capable of boiling at least three gallons of water; anda notebook, to be presented to the veterinarian at each checkpoint. The notebook is for the musher to record information about the dogs and for the veterinarians to examine; the rest of the gear may be checked at most checkpoints.The musher must use a sled or toboggan that is large enough to carry injured or fatigued dogs under a cover. He can ship one or two extra sleds to checkpoints along the trail and switch if necessary. No sled can be used more than once unless it is to replace one that has broken.The maximum number of dogs on a team at the start is 16, the minimum is 12. At least five dogs must remain at the end of the race. No dogs can be added after the start of the race and all dogs must be either hitched to the tow line or riding on the sled. Mushers must exhibit good sportsmanship, cannot accept help along the trail except in emergencies, and must care for their own teams.If a musher kills an edible big game animal such as a moose in self-defense along the tail, he must stop and gut the animal before proceeding. Any mushers that come upon the scene must stay and help. The gutted animal must be reported at the next checkpoint. Mushers must sign in at each checkpoint and sign in and out at all mandatory stops. Each musher must take one 24-hour stop during the race at a time that is most beneficial to the dogs. In additional to the 24-hour layover, he must take two eight hour stops at designated checkpoints.

    You do not have the funds to provide these dogs with better accommodation? In other states, these dogs would take you. Because the conditions in which you keep them and not only you are unacceptable for a regular dog and not for a dog athlete. Invest in money and build their kenel the best they deserve!

  • @kasiakahorska9757
    @kasiakahorska9757 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    These are athlete dogs, and live in worse conditions than dogs in shelters. How can you keep dogs so unacceptable in any other country, only in Alaska. I'm surprised that so few people are interested in the fate of these dog athletes???

    • @steamysimmer
      @steamysimmer 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's in the mushers best interest to keep the dogs happy, healthy, and well taken care of. the guy clearly cares a lot about his dogs, and the dogs seem happy and very healthy.

    Appears technology is potentially ruining the Last Great Race 😡The uniqueness of Iditarod is , dogs, distance, weather and mushers dealing with sleep deprivation, all with NO outside help.I volunteered 2 years out on the trail in the 95 & 96 this is a bad change for the race!!Thankx excellent video, Thankx

    • @Crowley99718

      I think one way they could regulate if they had one line where the committee can listen in like SAT phones.

    • @Crowley99718
      @Crowley99718 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Technology isn't the problem. It is potentially the people using it. It's like blaming the new generation for the internet.It's a dumb argument and its' pointing fingers, which gets us nowhere.

  • @gojl5567
    @gojl5567 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video. I do have a question. What was the IOFC's response about iPods? Many Iditarod mushers seem to want to have music with them, and it's becoming difficult to have one without wifi capabilities. Would you allow them? My feeling is that I don't want to open up that line of communication, but I don't know how they would police it.

    I was always interested in sled dog racing as a kid after reading a book on it, must have been in 2nd or 3rd grade. Enjoyed watching the NatGeo Survival Alaska show and seeing you and your brother and then finding out a bit about your story I really got into the 2014 Iditarod and then again the 2015 Iditarod. I've enjoyed watching a learning all about mushing and racing dogs from many different people but it's always cool to see info from and on your favorite musher. It sure seems like you are a well rounded man with a firm family foundation dedicated to your job and your passion. It's easy to say your are my favorite to follow...Good Luck hitting the upcoming training season and I look forward to seeing you race again! (Maybe someday I'll get my wife an daughter up to see an Iditarod start!) Just to inquire...are you planning on running any other races or are you strictly focusing in on Iditarod from here on out? And also what is the best way to follow each race?

    Good to see a distance musher with this philosophy. We free run in the summer and keep the dogs conditioned too it helps significantly and like you said strengthens the tendons and ligaments and gives them a foundation. All world class athletes train year round. We've had almost zero injuries during the snow season after we started training free running. Thanks for sharing!

    Once a dog is retired from competitive racing they go into our tours, our puppy training program, or go to a recreational kennel. Because sled dogs are a mixed breed dog they are generally very healthy until the very end.
