I was very lucky as my grandfather taught me how to French polish. He had been a headmaster before he retired so he could teach. The wad of material that you apply the polish is called a rubber by the way. The first thing I polished on my own was a burr walnut veneered pie crust table. Like you I have no idea how many coats but it looked like it had a piece of glass over it. It was amazing until my dad put his glass of gin and tonic on it. Shellac dissolves in alcohol. So I had a lovely ring on the table. Took it all off and used varnish. That piece is beautiful and I hope you keep up with the French polishing, it brings wood to life.
I actually love that you take something that is not that important, when it comes to furniture, and make it that important. That turned out wonderful and worthy to own!
Two thumbs up! What a beautiful transformation! I heard about French Polish from a friend 30 years ago, but had no frame of reference before seeing your video. Thank you for the great instructional format, and. Kudis for sharing this project. Kudos!!
I really enjoy seeing your prep work. It is very hard to instill this ethos into people. 95% of your effort is in the planning and preparation and the balance a mear 5% is the fun stuff. Welcome to live.
I think I'd call this your miracle piece. Could not even begin to imagine the end result. But you could see its beauty through all the damage and neglect.
Fantastic job! The “jewelry” (drawer pull) shined up beautifully and the inlaid detail on the drawer is perfect. The French polish technique....magnifique!
What a beautiful restoration! Thanks for sharing this French polish method. Another thing I learned was to hold the finishing nails in needle nose until they’re set. Thanks!
IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL! The top coating you chose for this piece was so time-consuming!... but the result is so professional! You have so much love and patience for the piece you are working on that takes your restorations- transformations to a very high level! Thanks so much for sharing!
I have two of these style end tables that I got from my sister in law refinished and in our living room! Ours have fluted doors that cover that bottom opening!
WOW, you did an AMAZING JOB ON THIS PIECE!!!! Me, I don't have the patience! I've worked on some crummy wood, but NEVER ANYTHING as damaged as this was!!!!
Thank you very much! The French Polish did take a LONG time compared to polyurethane. But, now I can say that I know how to do it :-) Mark that off my bucket list.
Not a great idea if kitty does what kitties do when marking turf. Cat pee will partially dissolve shellac. The better finish would be epoxy or boat bottom paint.
That's a telephone table from the 1920s the shelf below the drawer is for the phone book to store it and the drawer is for paper and pens for messages...good design actually. Amazing restoration.
My mentor Tom kept telling me that but I did not believe him. LOL! I thought he was joking! The nightstand by this company with the same drawer front is selling for $795 on the internet.
OMG! I do too! I just could NOT believe that it actually vacuumed up all the dust. It really was not very loud either. I did not even have to turn down the volume on the clips when I was using it. I always have to turn down the volume when I am sanding. The company just increased the discount another 10% so if you are interested it getting one, now is the time. The Dewalt version is $650.
Like the result, good color combination. French polish is still rather matte but even. Always a choice between this stage and working it to a real deep high gloss.
Thanks Peter- I prefer a matte/satin finish because I think it shows off the grain more. When you have a high gloss finish the reflective surface hides some of the grain. Thanks so much for your comments!
I'm not too convinced that the French Polish method was any better than just applying shellac the normal way. After you did the other work on the piece, it was going to look great regardless. It looked like something you found a dumpster. And now it's a beautiful piece of furniture.
Nooooo I have not painted furniture on my youtube channel for several months and I probably will not be doing it any time soon. My viewers all seem to prefer a stained finish. I only paint a piece now if it cannot possibly be stained because it has so much hidden damage.

It was beautiful to see this end table/nightstand restored to its former glory.
Beautifully done! I don’t have a good memory so I can watch them over and over and enjoy it all over again.
Glad you enjoyed it

Thanks so much. What a lovely comment!
It is so nice to see a piece of furniture made of solid wood not press board, you did a wonderful job on this peace.
I agree Jim. I guess that Johnson Furniture is a pretty high end brand. It is obviously well made.
Two thumbs up! What a beautiful transformation! I heard about French Polish from a friend 30 years ago, but had no frame of reference before seeing your video. Thank you for the great instructional format, and. Kudis for sharing this project. Kudos!!
