    Love hearing some English commentary, although personally, I'd have preferred they used the Japanese terms for suits, yaku and so on.

      Personally I don't mind the English terminology, but dangit it's "chii" not "chow"!

      The English version of the World Riichi Championship rule book calls it a "Chow". "Chii" only refers to the call made to make a "Chow" (In Japanese and English).
      I personally just call it a sequence.

    Wow, Mondo does a really good job with camera work. I find myself getting lost when I watch other televised tournaments, but showing the player draw their tile and then showing their hand really clears things up. I still have to watch the video at .75 speed though.

    • @NicoHolic777

      The tiles have magnetic backs, qnd those work with the mechanics under the table mat to shuffle, build and send walls. There are two sets of tiles in play so that when one game is done, the table can send the next wall to play while shuffling the just finished tiles. I believe there's a video about the table in TH-cam.

  • @MrFeng
    @MrFeng 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    for E3 (1), the reason for not riichi is not just waiting for a ryanmen. Usually this is not advisable since drawing in the winning tile via riichi is more effective. In this scenerio it is because of having that ankou 2p, which made her odds of improving wait a lot more, which is 25p, 358m for tanyao. This is the more desirable draw as it fix your hand at tanyao instead of cheapen it upon drawing 9m or 1m. She is most likely to riichi if the 2p ankou is not there.

    16:20 "The harder they [hands] are to complete, the more points they score" This is often not true. Mentanpin dora1 = 7700. Open chanta sanshoku = 2000. I enjoy playing Riichi quite a bit but I have to be honest to myself: The scoring is quite screwy. I think kuisagari is unnecessary (there are so many other demerits for opening the hand already).

    • @Jodabomb24
      @Jodabomb24 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I think they just meant that, for the most part, if one yaku occurs less frequently than another then it's given a higher value. Obviously this is not 100% accurate; for example, chiitoi is quite common but sankantsu is very rare and they're both worth 2 han. However, as a general rule of thumb it's fine.

  • @saiano1

    What mahjong set are they using? That tile size is exactly what I'm looking for. Any help is appreciated.

    • @Ejohrik
      @Ejohrik 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's a typical Japanese style set. 25*18mm. I know Amos makes good Japanese sets in Japan. The same company that makes automatic tables in Japan. Not sure about how easy they are to get abroad.
      Here in Sweden we don't really have many choices when it comes to Mahjong-related stuff, so I had to buy my set while in China. It's somewhere inbetween the small Japanese pieces and the typical big Chinese pieces. I wish it was Japanese sized, but I take what I can get.

    • @Ejohrik
      @Ejohrik 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Turning the tiles could give away that your tiles are not haku, 1pin, 8pin, etc. :P

    • @Sry342
      @Sry342 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Ejohrik I can get pretty obsessive about this type of details, so as a viewer I agree that it's a little frustrating. But as you say a simple gesture like turning some tiles would give HUGE hints to your opponents and you'd want to avoid that at all costs, especially in a professional tournament!
