One of my favorite things to do with glitches is try and imagine how the characters in game would react. Here, I just imagine everyone having their minds blown as Joker tells them “this is the metaverse, guys! Who needs to obey dumb laws like gravity and… whatever law keeps you from fazing through things!”
There used to be similar sort of runkiller in FFIX runs (boss could completely wipe your party like nine hours in if I remember correctly.) I watch a LOT of these multi hour RPG speedruns as background noise and to learn new things and as it turns out, most of them have some sort of runkiller hours in and that, as you said in the video, makes me respect the runners who can just push through random bullcrap like that and persevere to continue to do runs. I definitely would not have patience for that! Persona/Megaten speedruns are some of my favourites, love to see you cover one of them! Great video, thanks for your hard work!
Deathguise is still like that but fairly in nearest save point... Digimon World 3's final boss can kill you and causing game over if you don't understand how his counter attack works. That's why I always remind new speedrunner to buff Defense and Heal before you deal damage to not die against the counter since you die in your turn then boss have his turn after that killing your low level Digimon and not letting them revive your main Digimon...
My favojrite trick(and the most famous I think) is the one where you can skip the fight with nyx just by starting the social link with Tanaka the day you fight with him.
As someone who follows the p5/p5r speedrun scene, I love that you went over these hilarious oob skips. It's like watching a history channel documentary on stuff you watched happen.
Nev and Shady where the ones looking for useful skips. I had to do that run about 20+ times before I beat the WR. But it could be better. It's just a matter of time until they come back and beat me again.
I can't think of another game where OOB antics are half as appropriate as they are in Persona 5. Thinking outside the box, breaking the rules and sneaking through areas thought to be inaccessible to find clever shortcuts is what being a Phantom Thief is all about!
Great, detailed video. Persona 5 / Persona 5 Royal are great RPG runs that usually go dismissed just because of their sheer length, even by RPG standards. A lot of technical aspects go into making the runs as fast as they are though, and even though the community for each game is very small the people involved with both games have put a lot of time and effort into optimizing these runs as best as possible. edit: Granted there are a few minor inaccurate pieces of info on P5R. After May 2020, the full method of going OOB properly in Royal was being discussed long before December 2020 and the mention of what Fetchgames randomly stumbled upon, and this can be seen reflected in several videos on Shady's channel around July of 2020. Where Shady recorded methods of him going OOB in Madarame's, Okumura's, Kaneshiro's, and Maruki's Palace. Albeit in spots that didn't turn out to be much use in the end, but the community was still well aware of how to achieve free movement OOB long before December 2020. Fetchgames discovery was a recorded method of being stuck in the ground post ambushing a shadow. Which seems to be a rarely occurring bug with still no known method of achieving consistently.
I found a glitch in a Flash RPG called _Crystal Story II_ that allows both bridge areas to pretty much be skipped--normally, avoiding enemies on the bridges is harder than normal due to the tight space, but changing the display mode to Follow or Full makes it possible to clip out of bounds in the first transition points. While there are no speedruns of this game (or the first one, for that matter) that I know of, discovering that glitch (at least for myself) did intrigue me about speedrunning this game...
If nobody has run it, you'll get the first world record for it easily. And you'll potentially bring up conversation about the game and get more people interested in running it. Go for it!
@@justaguy80 Same (at least, "old" being relative for me). I discovered it early into high school, and it's one of the first turn-based RPGs I remember playing to completion. It took me at least one failed attempt each at the main bosses of chapters I and IV (and some additional time) to notice the turn-order display on the left. Once I found that, I was able to learn how to better manage turn order and speed.
I think a video comparing the different versions of Persona 3’s speedruns would be interesting. Because the one thing I know about persona 3 speedruning is that in fes, there’s a glitch that let’s you skip the final boss entirely, meaning you theoretically have to do none of Tartarus(probably a bit of a boring speedrun at that point). It saves 5 hours over the category that bans this glitch. However for some reason, even though it doesn’t have this major skip, the Persona 3 portable run is half as long, and I can’t imagine what makes such a huge difference. Sure the loading times and mashing through the cutscenes is probably faster, and it has fast travel, but fes can skip all of Tartarus. Wtf is going on in p3p that makes it so much shorter? I’d watch the runs to find out, but it’s a 15 hour and 8 hour run.
Scenes play out more like a Visual Novel than the PS2 original where characters are walking around and visibly having their polygon models emoting. All of that not existing in P3P just makes it a lot faster to go through.
Portable has several things that make it way faster. The visual novel style means that instead of walking around and watching cutscenes you just need to mash. Persona 3 has a lot of cutscenes. The ability to quick travel anywhere means you can immediately go home in about 15 seconds compared to the minute or so it takes normally. On the topic of quick travel, you can leave Tartarus at any floor and go back to your highest floor instead of having to use the teleport. Combat is made less random and consistent due to a few key changes. Controllable party members makes planning and quick fixes to problems easier. The change to knocked down is another factor, p3p uses P4 knocked down where you only lose a turn if your dizzy. Skill cards mean you can have immunity and skills on personas that make bosses more consistent. Your party members are nearly always available in portable, which means you don’t need to plan around their availability. There’s a few more changes but they aren’t used to much in the speedrun e.g money easier to get.
You guys also forget in p3/fes you can’t really fast forward so you need to hold down triangle which takes some time since characters move around/ there’s a slight delay to show the next text, while in portable if you hold down triangle it’s super snappy and it’ll skip it really quick since it’s a visual novel. Where in fes a cutscene will take 3 minutes to fully skip it’ll take no more then 30 seconds on portable
Finally hearing someone say Pokemon Red Rescue Team is among their favourite games is amazing, plus the music from Red Rescue team early in the vid. Love it!
Eyyy, 17:42, I wasn't expecting to see that clip resurface again. Let alone in a Speedrun-based video. But I still say that's one of my favourite moments from my old streams. Imagine me, an accidental glitch hunter, nice~!
Ive done a couple of these a bunch of times as I was doing my final runs of the game to get all the valentines chocolate. My fav is either kaneshiros or okumuras as they skip the most. The thought of Speedrunning Persona 5 or any Persona Game is pretty nutso. But it was incredibly interesting to see how the glitches worked and how the runners utilised it. I'd be curious to see how they balance the other half of the game in the daily life and which confidants are key, skills etc. Great Video though!
I always loved all things out of bounds, because it lets me see everything. I still remember being curious about what's out there outside the underwater pipe in mkwii koopa cape back when i was a kid.
I'm glad to see DK getting more notoriety for his Persona speedruns. He makes enjoyable content from Final Fantasy Top 10s to Let'sPlays, so it's nice to have other people learn about him.
I feel as though speedruns for games that last longer than 10 hours NEED to allow players the opportunity to take a break. Think about how popular P5 is, yet how few people speedrun it. The amount of people who love the game, but also have both the time and willingness to sit and play for so long is extremely small. If a break were allowed I am confident the game would start to be broken and people would probably start finding new routes and making it significantly faster.
Ahhh thank you for the breakdown of Speedrunning this fantastic game! I've always thought about doing this run but never imagined it'd be possible due to my human body's limitations. Still a marathon but definitely plausible!
Not many games have grabbed my attention like P5 has. I haven't had a gaming expereince like that since I was teenager playing FFIX and FFX for the first time, and I've played many great games. I had a similar glitch in Royal. I tried to amblush a shadow from above in Kamoshida's palace. After the battle, I was stuck in the floor just like in the videos you showed.

There aren’t many games I consider perfect (the first Deus Ex) but I was in awe playing Persona 5. I had given up on JRPGs for many years but this series and Yakuza have really turned me back.
I have a combined 1000 hours in P5 and Royal, yet I could never quite see a way for anyone to speedrun the game. Quite obviously, this video opened my eyes. And now that I’ve learned how to skip the majority of Shido’s Palace, I’m doing it. No more Rrat Joker for me!
I once ran into a glitch in Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling Into Darkness where a single time quest completed itself multiple times, maybe close to 10, and giving me experience each time. I was surprised when after all the cutscenes, it didn't correct itself and I kept all the rewards and exp. It would be nice if any glitches I ran into would help someone, but I can't really explain how or why that happened. 😅 At least it was recorded though.
I was once playing through Dragon age origins and somehow skipped a minor section of the game that's usually boring and time consuming if you're playing casually. I have no idea how I set up the skip, I have no idea how to recreate it, and I have no idea if there is a dragon age origins speedrunning scene around and if they have discovered this skip. So a little bit what you said is true, I guess I am a glitch hunter in my own right.
@@willofthewinds3222 It's the part where you have to go into the fade near the end of the circle of magi. It was several years ago so the memories are a bit fuzzy, but I remember going into a cutscene for entering the fade, and at some point going into another cutscene that leads to the very end of the area. Pretty sure it's documented now though as I looked it up and found a forum post explaining how to replicate the glitch about 11 years ago
@@willofthewinds3222 I would say it might skip an hour or so in a casual playthrough if you knew what you were doing. The circle is also the shortest of the main quests I feel. It's a more memorable section of the game for sure, but in terms of the game as a whole I think it's more a detour than anything else.

Ayy, nice!
imagine liking a game so much that you'll spend hours looking for intricate ways to not play it
I remember darkkefka from when he uploaded top 10 final fantasy lists lol
Sorry i slacked off on that.. :(
I remember DarkKefka when he was uploading Dark Aeons/Penance battles from FFX in 2007. Those videos solidified my love for FFX!!!
I noticed that Legend of Dragoon music! :D
I wouldn’t call spending the day with some else from the last play through a ‘different path’
AHHH YESSSSS NEW SWELLLLYYY
...just in case you need to have a sip of of apple juice.
Yo shout out for using geothermal. One of my all time favorite tracks.
Imagine someone 100% speedrunning a persona game
DUDE I THAT GLITCH ON RELEASE DAY , THAT'S SO FUCKING COOL!!! I wish I had documented!!
I wasn't going to say anything until I heard Legend of Dragoon music. Wingly Forest is a good song, god bless Legend of Dragoon.
Imagine trying to speedrun persona 3 fes and have mitsuru kill your run using marin karin
YOOOOOO I CAN *FINALLY* WATCH THIS VIDEO
I once ran into a glitch in Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling Into Darkness where a single time quest completed itself multiple times, maybe close to 10, and giving me experience each time. I was surprised when after all the cutscenes, it didn't correct itself and I kept all the rewards and exp. It would be nice if any glitches I ran into would help someone, but I can't really explain how or why that happened. 😅 At least it was recorded though.
My favorite palace skip is the one with all the water and guy dressed in green. :P
they have their perks, course I'm not skilled enough to pull them off the right way.
Anyone know if this glitch is on the switch version as well? Don't see why it wouldn't but I couldn't find any info online.
What part are you talking about? I can think of one or two places you could be talking about.
@@dudenator3 Huh, I wouldn't have counted that as a minor section due to it being a majore part of one of the four big parts of the story
@@willofthewinds3222 I would say it might skip an hour or so in a casual playthrough if you knew what you were doing. The circle is also the shortest of the main quests I feel. It's a more memorable section of the game for sure, but in terms of the game as a whole I think it's more a detour than anything else.
Of course it's in Okumara's palace!
If it's within game, it's all good. Nothing is 100% solid and it's something that's still seen today. It's not bad or good, just apart of life.
You know i miss Cheat codes.
