    when my family member accidentally opened the door without warning, my dobie came close to the door but came back when called. on the other hand, in a similar situation, my pomeranian dashed off, went into a neighbor's house and started playing with their kids... truly, doberman supremacy is real 🤣

    I think #3 is especially important and missed in so many instances. I will never forget in our early years with our second male I was so convinced he was dog aggressive that our vet would make us wait in the exam room until all dogs were clear of the waiting room before we could check out. It wasn't until I turned around in our back yard one day and found him happily playing with a strange dog that had wandered in I realized he wasn't dog aggressive at all, he was only reacting to my anxiety about him being around other dogs and 'protecting' me from the 'threat'. I was mind-blown!

    • @DobermanPlanet
      @DobermanPlanet  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Oh wow!! That's a testimony to how well they can read their owner's emotions. It's great that you were able to figure that out and that he was protecting you, though! Kudos to him!

    Just rescued a ~5 month old dobie from a local shelter last week! Definitely still in the nipping stage. Also learned after the fact that he was deaf - the foster didn’t know or at least inform me. After further research I came across DINGs which I guess isn’t uncommon for Dobermans and I’m 95% sure he has it based on how clumsy he is and being deaf of course. Also explains why a purebred Doberman was at a shelter. Learning as much as I can about training Dobermans and deaf dogs in general and hoping it goes smoothly, wish me luck and thanks for the videos!

It was ROUGH haha 😂but trust me they do calm down! Just last night my 1 year dobie and I were playing and my hand was in his mouth and I was like wow so gentle! It's so true about them not trying to escape. My last Dobie was extremely intelligent. I would leave for work and he had access to the outside. I would leave and come home and he would greet me at the door. I started getting letters from the postman that if my dog was outside he would not deliver the mail. I was like this is odd, my dog is never out front. After a few more letters, I was like maybe someone's dog is hanging out around my front yard. Then one day my next door neighbor came over and said "hey just to let you know your dog met me when I pulled up into the driveway today". She knew what Max looked like. I was like that can't be he greeted me inside the house at the front door today when I came home. I was like something is going on here. I went around the yard to check for holes or some other way he was getting out. We had a rod iron fence at the side of the house, but he was way too big to fit through the bars. So I took him out in the front yard and said, Max get in the house. He went up the hill covered in ice plant on the left side of the house, pushed one of the rod iron bars and it moved and he went through. He would leave the house, go around the to the side, and get out in the front, and before I came home, he would go back inside the house. He had all the chances in the world to leave and go explore but he didn't.

    My doberman loves her agility course. Getting her attention before and sometimes in between the course is hard since she is deaf. Cersei is amazing at doing the course- tug of war-hide and seek and fetching/ bringing toys back. It's really exciting seeing her accomplish so much being deaf. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge with us that has helped in ways you can not imagine with a deaf doberman

    My first Dobe, would tattle on the other dogs if they were doing something they weren't supposed to do. Nose Work definitely helps with the anxiety. Sara Ondrako has an awesome video on how to make a snuffle mat with a pocket. My younger Dobe won't eat his lunch if we put it in his dish. Has to be in his snuffle mat. He also loves the puzzle toys, especially the ones where they have to get things out of the stuffed log or a jolly roller. In fact, once he does get it out, he brings both items to us as if to say again - and make it harder this time or add more stuff for me to get out of the stuffed log. Lol. Have to say my guys are couch potatoes in the house, but I insist on it - routine, consistency, etc. My older one has a high prey drive so headed to a barn hunt next week - Instinct and Novice. Enjoy that Dobe!

    • @robinrutherfordcost4748

      They are also roto rooters - always nudging you to keep petting them. Taught the one that does it the most to rest his head on my knee rather than flip my hand up as if to say - you will pet me now. It's just a nicer way of saying please pet me Mom. How can you resist, right? Now, my less confident Dobe kind of has a split personality that you usually only see in little dogs. Yeah, pet me, and then rrrraaahh. As if he's saying, that's enough. We had to keep a journal for him - when it was happening, what was triggering it. Eventually came to the conclusion, he's not as touchy feely as his brother. Definitely not a morning dog, and cranky at night too, so we got him used to a muzzle and helped change the trigger. Now he gets treats and doesn't growl or snap, but I still have to watch him. No petting when it's movie time. He has to be in his place or he can go in the kitchen if he'd rather be alone. Hope that helps.

    Nailed it, John! Every point that you brought up I was laughing/groaning to myself "Yup, that's Ramsey!" I will be sure to try out some of your helpful tips! However, my Remi is a VERY destructive chewer. Basically, if it can't be safely eaten/digested I've stopped buying toys for him because he turns them to shreds and piles of stuffing hours after getting them! (He did have an 'indestructible' toy once, that lasted a day-and-a-half...) Even puzzle toys that produce treats, he won't outright destroy them right away, but he definitely does take pleasure in tearing his things apart (he even watches me as he's doing it) Do you have any suggestions/recommendations for how to stop the destructive chewing? All I can confidently buy him right now are bones and edible chews like salmon skins, and my house is starting to look like the home of a serial killer because of all of the dog bones hahaha Any advice is appreciated!!

    Hey John... glad to see new videos. THIEVES... that's what they are... over the years we have had several dobes and every last one has stolen something, mostly food left unattended. it doesn't take them long to grab it and run off, even when your back is turned for a moment. A beautiful porterhouse steak stolen right off the gas grill while cooking when I turned around for the tongs. An entire pizza I placed on the counter to pay the delivery man. An entire roast chicken again on the counter while I reached into the fridge to get the salads we were going to eat with it. An entire loaf of bread right off the counter that one he took to his crate maybe to eat later. All different dogs. You would think we were starving our dogs but it was never the case. Dobermans are the ultimate food scavengers... oh I almost forgot the garden vegetables jumped the fence and ate every ripe tomato right off the vine
    ... errrr!
    But they were all wonderful dogs, smart as they come and just lovable bandits ❤

    I have watched your videos from day one with my now 18 month old male not yet neutered. He remains a sock thief to this day! He destroys level 5 and extreme dog toys in about 2 weeks. We are on his second rope for the large Jolly ball! I left dry food out all the time and he is not a chow hound and only consumes about 2 cups dry and one large can Purina Pro Plan a day. His favorite toy by far is the treat ball. We walk a couple miles every day in an area where he can run off leash but does great on the leash. Interesting item he never barks at other dogs even if they are barking due to his presence. He periodically digs and we will eventually make him a sand box. He is very curious but not aggressive. During house training we used the crate until we installed the doggy door. In total only three house breaking accidents ever! Thanks for all your videos.

    We have our puppy almost 2 weeks now, been waiting months. We are in LOVE. What i noticed: He needs mental stimulation because else, he is going to act like a dinosaur raptor... and i mean, nipping. It's so bad hahaha. So a lot of short good stimulation works for him. He already has no problem to be alone for a little hour. Also, he knew sit and place in 1/2 days. Very smart.. I gave him a puzzle, way to easy! So yes they are so so smart. Blows my mind. I love him, this is our first dober.

    The only issue we ran in to with ours is a serious dislike of visitors. Especially male people. ( handyman, friends etc) that said I don't have many friends and it's generally just him, the kid and me. But when ever someone does come over he is friendly only for qs long as I am in the room the moment I go get a cuppa or something for my guests he will not let them move at all. If you got a tip on that it would be great. As its not helping my loneliness if he scares of people coming here.

    I had a female Doberman who died at 7 years old unexpectedly and we were heart broken! Tessa was American and European!! My husband and I have a European Doberman now and she is 7 mos old now but her energy level is super high and I’m doing my best to exercise her on a daily basis usually power walking for 5 miles but it is summer in Fairbanks Alaska so it’s very warm out and we have a large fenced in back yard. Here’s where the problem arises, it is very cold and lots of snow that doesn’t melt for months. I take her to training classes twice a week but that will not be enough physical exercise for her. Since Freya Rose is all European she has more energy and I would love to hear some ideas on what I can do to keep her fulfilled all winter?? I will still be expanding her training all this winter but it’s mostly obedience and leash workouts! Please let me know if anyone has any ideas??

    • @DobermanPlanet
      @DobermanPlanet  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question, Allen! Arlo’s ears were standing up really fast. Probably could have stopped posting around 4 months of age but went until 6 months since that's usually the minimum you want to do regardless. Some dogs with ears that are difficult to stand will need to be posted until 8 months, or on rare occasions, even 1 year of age.

I heard them being obnoxious, and loud so I looked out my window to see what they were doing, and they were putting shaving cream all over my front porch..I instantly opened my door, and they ran, but my two dobies got out and chased them..When I called they immediately came back, I bet those girls had to change their pants after that, and would never put shaving cream on someone's porch again.

    Hey John, I have a Doberman. We got him from a rescue.He was about 6 months to a 10 months old, and He is the laziest saddest dog I know. Plus he's a biter. You do something he doesn't like. and he's got no problem chomping down on you. He doesn't attack he just bites down hard then lets go, his bites allow draw blood.He lives with me my wife and my three older boys. He has never bitten my wife although he's bitten all four of us. After biting one of us he always get taken down and pinned to ground. We don't hit him (no hitting that's on of our rules) but we hold him down till he gives in. He hates to get off the bed. You make him get down, he'll grumble at you as he slinks off. He always seem so sad. He walks up to you with both head and nub down. He then puts his head between your legs and just stands there? He's just odd but we all have grown to really love the dumb dog. Any ideas on how to lift his sprites and get him to stop biting,

    I plugged your channel on Beckman's Dog Training channel. Oops! I guess I just plugged his channel. lol
    This affects every breed, but I was hoping you'd mention Resource Guarding. My Dobie is fine with me taking his toys or food. But if he finds something while out on a walk, it's his and nobody else can have it. He won't give it up and gets aggressive if I try to take it away. The problem with living in a condo complex is, these damned kids leaving their toys, dropping gloves, socks, sneakers and garbage and not picking up after themselves.

My female doberman is now a bit over 7 months old (she went through her teething phase but still keeps biting us, especially on walks she kind of 'attacks' us. she isnt aggresive but rather wants to play but she bites so hard I get blue bruises and need to tie her on a pole to stop jumping and biting on me. We tried ignoring it as well but then she bites just much harder and its not possible anymore, we stop immediately playing as well (if thats what we were doing).

      You have to put your foot down and do it repeatedly as it takes awhile for a dog to learn, and when I say put your foot down I don't mean hitting it I mean be stern don't baby them or cuddle during training be very serious and they can feel you're energy.

    • @RidingSKIRT

      We have 20 week old dobie and what worked for us was trying to not leave food unattended and when eating or cooking don’t allow him anywhere near us by saying “out” and directing him away from the area. Took us awhile to mitigate the behavior but with consistency he finally got the idea and now counter surfing is almost distinct. If you have a separate entrance to the kitchen/dining area put a baby gate to set your “surfer” for success

    Wow, I’ve never dealt with any of these things aside from nipping as a puppy, and being a Velcro dog. My dog is a freaking gem! And I know it! And she knows it!
    She’s docile she’s pretty much a couch potato, if I were to sum her up in one phrase . She might like to run the fence every now and again with another dog, but other than that she is a angel. She’s never stolen any of my socks. She’s never eaten anything that wasn’t hers., she’s had the same toys for five years. Maybe I add one every Christmas but she’s carrying around the same piece of pizza for three years…. She’s my shadow I think we find contentment in each other. She misses me when I leave. That’s normal. But when I’m gone, she sleeps unless it’s for days then she does her normal activity but she’s never eaten anything Like the couch never never never
