We rescued one from death row at the pound. He had been returned six times and was about year old. We have other large dogs and rescues and my wife talked me into saving him. After several days of good behavior he felt more comfortable. I had my hand down around his food or something and he growled at me, I know it’s kind of drastic but it was my immediate reaction that before he was finished growling he found himself spinning over in the air and I held him down on his back and said don’t ever growl at me again. He was a great dog after that, just alpha problem. He got to be 14 but blew his knees out at 11 or 12. Got the surgeries but took the run out of him.

I get my dobermans from shelters. The last thing you want to do to a Doberman whose past life experiences are unknown- but showing avoidance, fear, any of these behaviors mentioned in the video- is to become physically aggressive with the dog. That's a sure way to get bit and destroy and trust with the dog. Maybe you can treat a dog that you are confident about past experiences but I would never risk getting physical with an unknown.Doberman.

We've actively discouraged biting and nipping in our Doberman puppy. She's about 9 months old now and if she puts her mouth on our arm or leg we say "why is my arm in your mouth?" And she'll stop. I learned a couple months ago how sharp their teeth are when her new adult tooth scraped up my shin and sent me to the hospital for stitches (not her fault. We were playing fetch, i had a long dress on and she couldn't see where my legs were).
She does get a little pushy when it comes to attention. Mostly when she wants to play. She'll shove the toy and her nose into your stomach or back. She's only tried randomly climbing in my lap once.

@ncangie in all fairness to my Eloise, she is still technically a baby... just a REALLY big one lol. She's about 80lbs already. She's still trying to figure out why strangers don't want to be her best friend anymore lol. She doesn't realize how big she is now.

75% of female intact dobes will go thru a false pregnancy. My female is experiencing it now. She carries a ball where ever she goes. You have to remove it from her mouth so she will eat. She is not producing milk...thank goodness! My first dobe breeder who I keep in contact with said there is no reason for concern and it will pass in due time. A few weeks or the time it takes for a pregnancy. She said don't take her "baby" away. It will just make he find other substitution and cause her to be frantic. Which is why I contacted her after taking ball away. She was fine the night before and woke up like that. So not all ball obsessions are call for alarm. Since you haven't had a female thought you'd like to know this.🥰

So my two year old male still wants to “ flea” bite me every so often as he’s playing. I started saying “you hurt me” in real LOUD voice and turning away from him. I would still play with my female for the next twenty minutes or so. Then going back to playing with them both. I’ve seen a big improvement in his play words me. Good luck!

Has the older adult been helping the younger males?

    • @str8channel
      @str8channel 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

No... although half brothers, the three year old is a rescue and came with some behaviors that have actually set the pups' training back, including overprotective instincts for his new mom as well as a dominate anti social quirk with other males during play time. It's plausible that he may have been encouraged to be protective in the wrong way or not in a controlled environment, at the very least. It appears the pups are more social at this stage and deserve kudos for their patience with their older brother. Time will be the largest contributing factor to his recovery as he becomes accustomed to his new life.

Hi John, me again. I got my girl Lucy at roughly a year and a half and she came with no discipline. She's great now after a year and half of my own work. I still have scars on my arms and legs when she bit me. The most effective response to the bites, after months of frustration was to bite her back on her ears and around her neck, just like a parent dog does to correct young pups. It still works like a charm. Soft pressure and a growl and she realizes I'm the alpha. I know you've debated the alpha term, but with strong working breeds and especially our dobermans, it is the rule they must understand. Lucy is great with everyone we meet who likes dogs. Those that don't still give us a wide berth. Fair enough but wow, she is just an amazing dog. Just like every doberman owner knows. Cheers and keep up the great work.

Thankyou for the information on certain problems with a Doberman, i have 2 males one is 3 years old and the other one is 1 year old !! From personal experience most of the traits of Dobermans / problems with the breed i have ironed out with constant training and stimulation, you're right Dobermans are very intelligent however they enjoy the connection with not only with owners , but with the environment and consistency!! I mean buy this setting certain parameters will undoubtedly increase confidence in both you and your dog. Alot of negative traits are not the breed but the lack of constant commitment to the breed , i am often asked are they a high maintenance dog and yes they are not just with health issues / nutritional requirements but also the ongoing inter action between you and your dog

We got our Doberman at 3 months gifted from my Daughter. When i was cleaning in the house and went for the broom my dobie got scared and ran. I think whoever has her for those 1st few months must have hit her with a broom. It's sad. We are going to obedience training but i have a feeling it may take longer for her to trust us due to potential abuse. Very sad, can't prove it but just gut feeling.

My Dobie is 15 mo. Old now and wags her tail at everyone. I’ve tried grabbing her foot when she jumps on me and others but it’s only maybe partially broke her of it. Recently I started a old tractor with a straight pipe on it and to my surprise she got crazy aggressive even coming at me. I caught her by her collar and talked to her with out her standing on her front feet and just stern talked her into me telling her it’s ok and calm down. It helped but the next time I started the tractor I put her on a chain away from it. When I checked her out after using the tractor she was normal and can’t say if it worked. The only other concern is after her rides daily on my Ranger she will half the time make a big circle or two and come from the side to nip at my hands as to make a game of it. If I walk with my cane it only makes her look as she like hasn’t figured that out, which is good. When I work in my shop she will give me little belly pinches just to get my attention and she knows it makes me laugh. I love her she does good things also and think it’s just where her ranking is a little above me and keeping ahead of her thinking is best

He wants to be with us constantly, but he is fine having alone time in his crate too. He also wants us near when he eats. Otherwise, he is fine at the dog park and around other people and dogs. He does get overstimulated though and he gets so excited when we get in the car that he barks the entire time, so we are laying off the dog park for a bit. Any suggestions? If I go near the treats though it suddenly all stops, she’s about the same age too, I don’t think it’s aggression just more playful but I’m trying my best to redirect it, it’s just like you said though, she doesn’t want any toys, I’ve tried them all, it’s very rare she’ll take it. I do find though she’s also worse when she’s tired. In bed she’s good as gold really.

Question, I got a 7 year old Dobie from a couple that needed to re home him. Being older he really didn’t have any bad habits to speak of.
He did have one unusual habit we were never able to break him. If he wanted to go play or wanted attention he wasn’t getting when he wanted he would grab me on the wrist with his mouth and tug to lead us where he wanted. He was careful not to hurt me, my wife or the grandkids.
Have you heard of this behavior with other Dobermans?
Unfortunately he just passed at 12 1/2 years old.

Hi John, my pup is 10 weeks old today and he was diagnosed with parvo yesterday morning. I am worried that if he makes a full recovery, he will have fear issues because of his hospital stay and the pain he is experiencing right now. He recovered very quickly and is back home with us. He was shown a pig ear for the first time and alerted me for about 5 minutes before he calmed down and started chewing on it. You'd never know he was sick only 48 hours ago! My breeder vaccinated him at 6 weeks then I vaccinated him again at 8 weeks when I got him. I guess it made all the difference.
Apparently dobermans, specifically black (fact check me for sure) are more susceptible to parvo? Interesting, if true!

Stop the rehearsals. Take your dog on leash to where you want them to eliminate. You're just going around in circles the 6 foot leash length. Put it on cue - I say Get Busy, Find a spot. As soon as they're done eliminating lots of praise. If you're using treats, give them one 1- 3 seconds after they went. No treats for coming inside until the issue is under control. Also, make it a separate event. Even if you want to play or go for a walk, bring them back inside, even if it's only for 1001, 1002, 1003, then open door - go play or let's play! You never know when you have to leave, so getting them into the habit of coming inside after they eliminate will help. One of my students just said they actually used the clicker to house-train their dog. Never heard of that before but they said it worked like a charm. Love that my students are always thinking. Hope that helps.
