  • Which one is your flavor of style? Using my trusty Ironbird with EMGs to get some ripping tones out of these 2 awesome amps. The amps are attenuated by my Jettenuator which I've found to be super transparent. I'll also be using a Walrus Ages OD pedal to boost these amps for maximum shred

    Great comparison! I'm really liking the more guttural chugging on the DSL. The EVH is a modern metal machine though. Used to own the DSL 40 combo and had to sell it unfortunately. A super fun amp, both boosted and straight in.
    Cheers man!

    Great comparison, both are very good amps with a lot of versatility. Nice to see a speaker other than V30s too. I am partial to Eminence Legend V1216s myself.

      I wasn't a huge fan of the Randall stock stuff but it worked! After this video I've loaded it with WGS Et65 and a Eminence Swamp Thang. I heard the V1216s are great too

    Very well done man. Great video and awesome playing. Just a note on those cheap attenuators, though those high wattage resistors in it are capable of handling the power, the L-pad windings in the pot meter cannot, and the signal passes through there as well. I had 2 L-pads burned in place in a Bugera and JetCity attenuator. I wouldn't recommend playing for hours using those.

    • @DeathMetalDevin
      @DeathMetalDevin  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ah man, that's great to know. I haven't had one burn out on me yet. I know I do not like the bugeras at all. Love the Jettenuator. I def don't stick a 100 watt on them. I use my fryette ps100 for that. 50 watts should be ok as long as Luke u said I'm not playing for hours. Thanks for the kind words man

      @@InDecemberOfficial I had a Bugera PS1 crap out. How do the built-in attenuators on modern lunchbox heads compare? Ex: Orange's "Bedroom/Headroom" switch, or Peavey's "20w/5w/1w" switch on their MH models. Are they reliable + safe to use without burning out parts?

    Ahhh....Excellent video. I play primarily through a 50 watt Stealth and also have an MT15. I also have a new DSL20HR being delivered today. So, this was an entertaining and informative watch while I "patiently" wait on the UPS truck. You have a different model 50 watt, but it's still a good comparison between the modern 5150 sound and modern Marshall tones.

    • @DeathMetalDevin
      @DeathMetalDevin  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You will be very happy with the tones from the Marshall for sure. Takes a little to dial in. Make sure u keep that presence down and treble. Use mids to get some nice top end

    • @BazonBlades
      @BazonBlades 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @DeathMetalDevin , Ok... Just spent about an hour with the amp. The highs are a little strident, but like you said, they can be controlled with judicial use of the presence and treble. The bottom end is totally out of control. The resonance circuit is very strong. I've only tried it through one of my 3 cabs so far, but it is definitely a little thumper. I have the bass at noon and resonance at 9:00 or less, and there is tons of low end. I am using a Jackson Soloist loaded with Duncan Distortions and running the amp through an Avatar Contemporary 2x12 loaded with V30's. I also have a Harley Benton vertical 2x12 loaded with V30's and an Avatar 4x12 loaded with 2 x V30's and 2 x G12H30's. We shall see/hear which cab this little guy likes best.
      So far I am very happy with the DSL20HR. It's a pretty decent sounding amp so far. I hear great potential in it.

    • @DeathMetalDevin
      @DeathMetalDevin  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    • @BazonBlades
      @BazonBlades 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @DeathMetalDevin , I typically don't use a boost, but this amp definitely needs one. I've been talking to Tony Pepers about getting a Dirty Tree in January. So I will probably try one. Or at least some boost.

  • @27retrodaze

    Dude... I feel like we dont talk about attenuators/attenuation enough... I bought a Tone King Iron Man and it floors me how i feel like i RE-discovered or JUST discovered all my tube amps... To get those tubes cooking at a humane level on the ears with an awesome reactive feel is the best money ive spent as of late... Maybe the most boring, but I absolutely love that thing... 🤘

    • @DeathMetalDevin
      @DeathMetalDevin  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Man attenuating is the way to go. Problem is, is that there's alot of attenuators that just suck the tone out of the amps. I've played alot of them just not the Ironman. Jettenuator for the best cheap teansparent attenuator. Fryette PS-100 for my all arounder

    • @27retrodaze
      @27retrodaze 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Fryette Powerstation is SWEET!! My Tone King doesnt do as much, but what it does do, attenuation, is AMAZINGLY good!! Theyve been putting attenuators in their amps for a long time, they seem to have nailed it... i remember attenuators when i was a teenager in the 90's were horrible for killing tone.. The tech has caught up today!

    Both excellent amps. Love the hell out of a Marshall or 5150...of any lineage really. But they definitely have starkly different topograhy in their gain structure. I favor the 5150 usually. The DSL seemed to connect more with your playing here.

    • @DeathMetalDevin
      @DeathMetalDevin  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I could totally see it connecting with the way I played it here. I do like my dad rock riffs here and there then blast into OD grind territory

    • @bradatherton9369
      @bradatherton9369 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, the topology of the 5150-iii is vastly different from the DSL20. The 5150 has more even order distortion accomplished by several additional cascaded gain stages, which is why it can handle more colorful chords, whereas a DSL has fewer stages so the distortion is more odd order, and works best with power chords.

    I owned both and I sold the EVH 5150iii. I'm keeping the DSL20HR. I found the EVH 5150iii to have a lot of noisy feedback when the gain was turned up. I tried a handful noise gates and didn't like them. Evh 5150iii is the only high gain amp that I've owned that I found unusable due to the unwanted feedback.

      @@DeathMetalDevin I honestly enjoyed playing it more than the dsl 100 just because it was much easier to dial in and reign the volume in, yet still plenty loud for live jamming. The 100 was badass for sure, just a fire breather that I was forced to allow to collect more dust than I wanted it to.
