This game is amazing! Thanks for giving this game more of an audience as it definitely deserves it

My mum gave me this game for Christmas 1993, I was 10 years old. It was one of the few random games available from the local store and she just wanted to take a chance with it. I'm so glad she did. I had no idea what an RPG was and the amazing gem was my first introduction to them. So simple and yet so satisfying and engaging. I beg you to listen to the soundtrack a bit more, especially the main theme and medley .... Still sends shivers down my spine to this day!

What a gem of a channel YT recommended! Also, I see that you play Eroge RPGs too.

Loved the video, excited to watch more. Something about having to use more of your own imagination in these older RPG's always made them feel much more immersive to me than the graphics heavy modern ones.

Nice video! New subscriber here. I owned a Game Gear as a kid, but I didn’t get to play this gem until recently, on the 3DS. It was the very last game I downloaded from the e shop before it closed down 😊

I modded my Game Gear last year and played a bunch of games on it. This one surprised me the most. It's a pretty complete JRPG on a handheld, in 1992. But I did think the frequency of random encounters was too high, especially towards the end.

I heard about this game at the turn of the millenium on a fansite dedicated to various JRPGs. Defenders of Oasis was mentioned but other than a sloppy review with some praise, there was nothing. I remembered the title and found a few more informations in later years. Then finally gave it a try when it was rereleased on the 3DS Virtual Console. Enjoyed this game a lot.
Most frustrating part was probably getting into the bandit's hideout. On my second playthrough I missed a trigger to open the gate. So it was Open Sesame for a while.

Nice channel yourself man, subscribed. Funny you just reviewed Crystal Warriors-that'll be the next Game Gear game I check out. It's slim pickings for RPGs on that thing

Not hugely into RPGs but I absolutely loved Defenders of Oasis as a kid. I still remember how awesome it was when I got the barbado. 10/10 game for me.

My sister bought this for me for Christmas in 1993, with a Game Gear and a couple other games. I was blown away! For its time, it really was a great little JRPG. There were some minor flaws, but overall I had really enjoyed it. I played it again 6 months ago and still, I think the only big annoyance was the encounter rate at times.

It's one of my fave game gear titles, and one of the best handheld games ever. I really like the sound, well thought out menu system, and the lovely colorful graphics. Does anybody know if there are games like this on the PSP? I don't mind a 3d graphics view instead of a flat 2d, as long as the games are pickup and play. Thanks in advance.

Just Remember Crystal Warriors has permadeath. It was my first SRPG and after playing a friend's copy through two trips to a nearby city, and most of a sleepover I had to restart because I didn't realize that until my force was starting battles with only two or three units due to casualties. Probably why I'm still convinced any SRPG with mandatory permadeath and no revive spell or item is a horrible introduction to the sub-genre.

Sounds rough for a first SRPG!

Fun fact: This is actually a prequel to Beyond Oasis and its sequel. Great game with really impressive environmental tilesets.

You might be thinking of The Legend of Oasis, the prequel to Beyond Oasis. This is a standalone game. In Japan, they have different names. Legend/Beyond are part of the Thor series, whereas Defenders is called Shadam Crusader.

I'm stuck in a prison that I can't escape because there's that obligatory fight that I just can't win.

@@rpg_haven Yup. That aut-save totally ruined my game. I'll have to start over from scratch and grind like crazy.

Update. I continued my 5 years old game on 3DS. Damn boss kept damaging my characters by 33% of their HP. But I experimented with the spells and kept healing. THEN I BEAT THAT BOSS! I was still stuck in that dungeon. I rediscovered that you can read the yellow posters for power and rest. Then I got out, and I'm finally at Chapter 4.
Wish me luck for the rest.
BTW, I can't imagine playing that game on original hardware with batteries and no save-states.
