ANY other team would have been yellow carded and a penalty try awarded for that debacle at the end of the half. Not that Tonga had a chance of winning but tier 2 nations continually get the shaft in RWC.
+J. Green The 2nd tier teams have had easily their most impressive World Cup in the tournament's history. They've closed the gap on the 1st tier teams. You really think they are being discriminated against by the referees?
+Wil Sargisson not outright or consiously, but I think that subconciously they're watched a lot more closely by the refs. For instance the AB's are offside all the time in the ruck but rarely called on it. Or a tier 1 nation is going to get the benefit of the doubt most times if a scrum goes down. I don't think its a purposeful thing, just human nature. I do agree that it's the best RWC ever.
+steve french yes that AB try was definitely held up. And that's a perfect example. A tier 2 nation scoring that an it most likely would have AT LEAST been looked at. It's the fact that they never even went upstairs to look at it.

I guess you slept through NZ's quarterfinal loss to France at the 2007 World Cup, then. Wayne Barnes and the touch judges missed one of the most blatant forward passes I've ever witnessed, which led to the match-winning try. Not a single penalty was awarded in the entire second half - a staggering statistic for any game of rugby, let alone a World Cup knock-out match.
Barnes was vilified from the rooftops by just about everyone for his performance. Paddy O'Brien was considered to have f**ked up by handing the refereeing duties for such an important match to a rookie like Barnes. Barnes was overwhelmed by the occasion, it showed, and he got slammed for it.
