  • The Ultimate Sony A7S III Video Quality Test. In this video I compare every single codec and frame rate that the Sony A7S III has. I tested XAVC HS vs. XAVC S vs. XAVC S-i, in 24, 60 and 120 FPS to see which combinations look the best and have the most detail. Honestly, this in-depth Sony A7S III video quality test shocked me.

    I think this is by far my most extensive test I’ve done so far on the Sony A7S III. I literally compared every single 4k video format combination. XAVC HS vs. XAVC S vs. XAVC S-i all in 24, 60 and 120 frames per second so you could see which Sony A7S III video format has the best video quality. Were you as shocked as I was by the results of this detailed Sony A7S III Video quality test?

      Yea If I didn’t have this channel where I need to buy these things to test them, I wouldn’t have bought one after learning what I did in this video. I’ve started to record HS 50M because it just doesn’t look any worse, especially for TH-cam. I think for cool grading a higher bitrate could be beneficial though - something I need to test myself.

      Yes i would say your assessment is correct. i have been meaning to redo this test with more random moving objects like you are suggesting. as well as i have read that it also makes a difference when you are trying to get a really good key on a green screen. Thank you for the comment though it completely makes sense.

      @@TymekStolarz Did you ever get to testing how these formats hold up in grading?

    • @anhatur
      @anhatur ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, there's not enough complexity as detecting and compressing static movement like that is done even by the simplest codec (h264). The worst I have seen compressed video go through is whitewater paddling, filmed from the cano. I guess you won't risk expensive equipment for that, but what about driving through a street lined with trees, perhaps even with their leaves blowing in the wind? It's these kinds of complex movement in all directions at once that really stretches the codecs.

  • @eggs-benny
    @eggs-benny ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love the detail that you went into for this!

  • @lukastemberger
    @lukastemberger ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would have been surprised if you saw any differences between these shots, so I'm happy that you didn't show any placebo effect.
    I made tests with complex footage. Leaves in the wind on a rainy day. When zooming in 800% I found the S codec to be way better than I, which is what I was expecting because of the more efficient compression. What I didn't expect is S being slightly better than HS as well.
    I used the FX6 and FX30 to test them.
    Codecs will act differently in different situations and your setup is very easy on any codec. Try filming confetti with all 3 and you'll see the extreme condition and the real difference between the 3.

    with such a static shot it is expected to percieve no difference. You should retry the test with a very moving shot like leaves or confetti. That is where Long-GOP compression falls apart. It has nothing to do with sharpness.

    • @TymekStolarz
      @TymekStolarz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was thinking of leaves but i thought it would have been difficult to compare each directly. Which is why I thought adding the repeatable movement with the slider might do something, each frame being different then the last. Not necessarily looking for sharpness, but anything that would tell them apart. I saw a couple other videos with leaves with not much difference either. But I will complete another round of tests and maybe a follow up video If I find anything of value

    Awesome video Tymek! Would love to see the S-I vs S with some unpredictable motion. I think the compression holds well because the frame from the left is moving right. So it’s easier for it to guess the motion and estimate a new frame.

    • @Deus_Ex_1

  • @gamepat9

    Your comparisons for static subject scenarios are perfect! It's good to know that in that scenario there is no quality difference. But I think you missed the point of the all-i codec. I think all-i is almost a requirement when filming water/fire/fog (basically all elements). I'm still looking for somebody who tested this. I don't want to pay 200€ for a memory card just to try it out if it's worth it. All my recent music video scenarios had fog, fire or water in it and the long-gop compression turned the footage into mush.

    Great in depth tutorial but please take no offense. Most cameras work like this. Image quality is the close to same across settings, especially in a controlled, well lit environment. More complex environments and different camera movements may produce different results. Also coloring may play a big factor in these settings, even tho all are the same bit depth. There are other things that could help broaden your findings and give a better perspective on the different settings. I'll be checking in periodically as I am a new sony guy.

    Shooting a static image with little varying detail is not a good test when comparing bitrates. I feel like I shouldn't have to explain this, but a large part of video compression is blending similar pixels and keeping static pixels idle from frame to frame. My point is, I can shoot this test background with a codec that is 10mb/s and 1000 mb/s and you will not notice a difference. Now shoot a tree moving in the wind at F11 with some grass below it and you will start to see major differences between bitrates.

Could you just say bay this exact memory card and name it and it will be just perfect for Sony a7s3, so many options and so many other things to think about so it will be much better just to know what exact card to bay and not overthinking this issue. Great videos!

      I do have a memory card video on my channel that I made a little bit ago, but it is more general instead of specific, so I will consider making one like you suggest. However I will tell you that the Sony V90 card is good - it’s just a little thick because of its “tough” rating so it takes a while before I was able to get it to move in and out of my A7s iii. And it happened with 2 copies. The other one that I’ve heard a lot of good things about are the prograde v90 cards, and I have the v60. I would defiantly stick with v90 though.

      haha it sure was, lots of footage to go through - i am working on a video on right now comparing a whole bunch of stabilization options in different camera movement scenarios which has even more combinations to test and compare. they take a lot of mental bandwidth to put together lol.
      Yea definitely it has to be associated with color. i was actually going to include a test in this video but when i shot a 8 bit and compared it to 10 bit, no matter how extreme i was with color shift or saturation they both looked the same, so i think i need to do a little more research to find a better testing method.
      i dont think i would make a whole video but when i have some time i will do a test and get back to you - my suspicion will be that image quality wise, they will look the same but there could be some color grading improvements.
      anything less than 32g i can see slowing things down, but i think it also has a lot to do with the graphics card as well. proxies though is a good temporary work around though. one of my first videos is testing the performance of my IMAC with 8, 32 and 64gb of ram with various photo and video editing software to see how much i can overload the computer b4 it starts to slow down. things might be a little different on a PC but there might be some info that could be useful for you.

    I think the flaw in this test is that you are comparing frame vs frame. In reality you should be comparing a sequence of frames (eg: video). the only difference SI has is that it doesn’t “leave out” any frames creating a “smoother” look. SO you need to test this with various scenes, with different lighting conditions, with different subjects, etc. Good work though

      Yea since this video has been posted I’ve thought of better more accurate ways to test the codecs out more thoroughly, though I think this test still has SOME value just far from the full picture of what the differences are. Yea this one is a tricky one. The examples I’ve heard about is like ripples of moving water and moving leaves on a tree. Lots of motion moving all around. But it’s tough to do a direct comparison that is the exact same, that’s why I thought of the test I did because it was controlled with all the footage looking the exact same way that I could directly compare. It would be more difficult have direct comparisons. I wasn’t sure what I was looking for, not necessarily sharpness but anything that would differentiate the two. I would say this exact comparison was inconclusive, but i think there was still some helpful comparisons like Hs vs s, and 120 vs 60 and 24, and how 50M HS still looks the same as 100 HS and 100 S.

      It’s a really good question. - just to confirm, you’ve tried to edit with the 2080 and it’s still not super smooth for 264 and 265?
      The problem that really slows things down is the 422, and not that it’s 10 bit. There are just very little graphics cards out right now that have the proper hardware to edit it properly - the only one i know is the m1 chips, even though they are integrated graphics I hear they cut through 4:2:2. I have the 2020 iMac fully spec’ed out, 5.5K CAD and it still chugs with 4:2:2. So I’ve been shooting H.265, 4:2:0 10 bit, and that seems to work fine, and I would imagine it should edit decently on the 2080. I haven’t heard anything about the new 3000 series but they might be better with 4:2:2 but I’m not sure.

      you actually cant even shoot 4k 120, or 1080 240 in ALL-i regular movie, they can only be shot in S&Q, but yes technically as 4k 60p all-i only works in regular movie and not S&Q, in total there are 3 codec, bitrate combinations that dont work with a V90 card.
      Having had this card, and knowing what i know now about video quality etc. i think CFexpress is overkill. the only time i've used those codecs are for video tests haha.

      I just thought it would be easier to see details when they are frozen frame by frame instead of while a video is playing out.

    I think the SI is for better quality with motion details. Would you know about that ?

    • @TymekStolarz
      @TymekStolarz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is something I tired to test towards the end of the video, where I used the slider to create movement between each frame testing HS, S and S-i. I couldn't see a difference between each frame, or when it was played back in real time. But this method may not have been the correct way to test S-I. I've seen that S-i should look better for busy scenes like rippling water or an entire frame of rustling leaves. I have yet to test this though, but i plan to make an update video trying to find and test more methods to see if S-i really has any obvious visual difference.

      @@TymekStolarz Yes that's what I have heard of. I am planning a green screen shooting, and was looking for the most information possible to get it right and more easy to keyed and edit. Thank you for your videos and follow up.

      ah yes i also heard that all-intra compression was also better for keying green screens - i will be sure to add this to my list of tests, thanks for the reminder. i have used regular IPB compression with other cameras for keying with a green screen and i never had too many issues as long as the green screen was lit properly.

      @@TymekStolarz I see at the end of the video want you mean, yes I find that too. The differences are very small. But it's maybe just me, but I see that some elements are more "profound" like the teal color of the book. So maybe it you need to make some compositing, you have more informations on color channels that can help for integration. Let's say if you shoot with green screen and some actor move fast. You want the most informations, and no motion blur.

      @@TymekStolarz I'm not familiar with intra compression meaning. What is your suggestion for green screen shooting with this camera ? This is not my camera and the cameraman is not used to do greenscreen shooting sessions. Thank you for your follow up, this is really appreciated.

    Any luck on how to view (play) 10-bit 4k clips on PC?

    • @TymekStolarz
      @TymekStolarz  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      On my PC i am able to play 10 bit, the issue is whenever its 4:2:2. if you do 10 bit 4:2:0 on HS, it should be able to play back. If not, using catalyst browse will preview all video formats.

    I’m sorry but this test is useless. You must film a slight gradient like a wall and then add a load of color grading and exposure boost (these are things that happen every day during a production) , and the difference betweeen the 3 codecs will be impressing.
