    Jody
I'm so sorry for your loss. The love and respect you had for your brother is evident. You said it well. God bless to all the victims, survivors, their families and first responders.

He's right - the whole world needs to make sure it doesn't happen again. But it did... in countries other than the US.

And it keeps happening with alarming regularity.

@@myoldvhstapes That is the cut-throat nature of the nightclub and entertainment businesses. Profit margins in the business of the intangibles - the musical experience, the atmosphere at the venue - are razor thin. And often the corners are cut in the most vital areas - venue safety, particularly in the clubs and bars that round out the tour circuits of some bands and other acts. Alarms go untested, unbatteried. Exit signs go dark. Doors, including one at the Station, are walled off, years prior, by management trying to prevent unpaid entrance or egress.
Unrated decorative or acousting materials go up on walls, instead of the mor expensive, fire-retartent stuff. Sprinkler systems in some places remain inadeqaute, or non-existent.
Until the bill comes due. And in February of 2003, it came due, in Chicago and West Warwick. Also in clubs in Russia and in Brazil.

I agree with Jody King, the world needs to make sure tragedies like this don’t happen again. RIP to Tracy King and the 99 lives lost 20 years ago and my heart goes out to Jody King and the king family as well as the families of the victims and the survivors of The Station Nightclub Fire

Here is one man I would have wanted to meet, a week or so before February 20th, 2003: the brother of Jody King - Tracy! If anyone had the power to change the events of that night, Tracy would have. Condolences to the King family.

Just in the past couple of years, Jody revealed that his WIFE, Liana King (the one standing with him here) and a cousin were also survivors of the fire!!! They managed to keep it secret for over 17 years. He mentioned it for a second as he was being interviewed shovelling snow (or something like that) at the memorial. So we have no idea if she went to the club with a known party who made witness statements all those years ago and left her out of their account, or if she went on her own. I imagine she did not receive any hospital treatment, because I can't see how that would have been kept out of the AG's investigation.

I'm here having just read a compelling article on the 15th anniversary of the tragedy from Jodys present day perspective...
Evidently the Kings and Derderians had been friends for many years prior to the tragedy..even went to school together.
Jody cites this as strictly an accident and not the owners - the culpable .. additionally he says the brothers have done as much as possible for the survivors, especially for the kids and have not run away. Therefore, I for one, intend to reverse my anger and bitterness towards them..
Maybe more of us should learn this important lesson from Jody.. identify it as you will -

This fire is like getting drunk and taking you 4,300 pound Dodge Challenger 115 mph down a side street and then claiming you "didn't mean any harm" when you hurt or kill someone. Baloney.
The victims, and hundreds of other people will be in physical and emotional pain until they die. Some will likely die sooner from the physical impact of this fire.
Whenever a victim dies, that fire will be the major defining piece of their lives.
Let's take some of the bits and shake them out:
A brother took till drawer while the building is engulfed, and ran behind it to get 2,500 out if it.
There isn't any record of either them or the band trying to help victims or rescuers in any way that I ever heard.
      Minus Biechle.
They all ran to get lawyered up immediately.
They left an employee freeze at their gas station because they were too cheap to pay for heat. (Barrylick's book)
They didn't care to pay for workman's comp. So people who got hurt at work got NOTHING.
They signed a dumbasses lease (they owned nothing) for an insane 4k a month AND had to take care of ALL building expenses. This caused a ridiculous cutting of corners. Including the foam sandwich.
At no point did they ASK about fire, even when a woman brought it up (and was ignored). At no point did they even LOOK for the legitimate product for this purpose.
Barylick had the DAT recorded inside the club. These idiots, along with JR and Kendall, (the others were just session players and had zero say in anything) should have to watch the video and hear the audiotape from inside EVERY day.
It's horrific. Barylick said he cried and then he went to throw up.
I wouldn't buy any of their sociopathic bs for one second. Or they would have done things the RIGHT way BEFORE.

enuff already. these men are forever branded murderers. their life has been damaged so badly they will never recover. having that, plus having to listen to all of these statements...this is brutal. we all make mistakes, before you vote to crucify them any more think about this....have you ever driven like a bat out of hell cuz you were late? of course you have, we all have. we know we are not allowed to do this, but we think of ourselves. doing this we COULD hit someone , someone who is obeying the law. still we do this. we all make mistakes. i think they have been punished enuff. ***true story a friend in louisiana had a husband of many years. all the men would carpool each week out to the oil fields. out on monday am, home on firday pm. anyway, an 18 wheeler truck made a bad turn, and hit them. all these men died! all of them except the driver of the truck. the person who made the bad turn beofre looking to be sure the coast was clear. this man was arrested, he has a criminal record of vehicular homocide, BUT worse yet, he was so distraught he ended up in a psyche ward. this poor ma, made a tragic mistake. one all of us have done, maybe not causing an accidnet and killing people, but still disobeying road signs. i was never more proud of my friend when she called and told me that she had gone to see this man at the hodpital. not to yell at him, not to make him relive this tragedy, BUT to tell him she forgave him. that she knew he made just a mistake. mistakes happen. this really meant a lot to this man, and it meant a lot to my firned to be able to put the anger and hate aside, and to think about those left standing. a mistake was maxde, please let them be forgiven! please...i know none of you reading this would want to be forever tortured after making a mistake. mistakes happen to all of us. think about that.

I am always telling my children, hey mistakes happen all of the time. I am always very forgiving when it comes to mistakes and accidents. Some mistakes don't make any sense because common sense was absent but shit happens. All of the time.
My problem with these two men is that they were two selfish, self-centered, and greedy.
When these two brothers bought the club in 2000, they lined the club with foam for sound insulation, because people living in the area kept complaining of the noise. They bought the cheapest foam possible, which means they didn't buy fire resistant foam because it was more expensive, and they nailed it all over the west wall of the club. Then they sprayed it with black paint which had glitter in it.
They did not pay their employees fairly, they owed thousands of dollars in arrears in rent and utilities, and they were greedy about every single penny they owed.
On the night of the fire, after the fire started, one employee working behind the main bar grabbed the cash register drawer (because she said there were piles of $20 bills because it was extremely busy the whole night) and when she bolted out of the kitchen door where all of the employees (except one) escaped out of, one of the Derderian brothers took the drawer from her when they were outside staring at the club in shock. The next day a fireman found the empty cash register drawer in a snowbank behind the club.
Yes, these two guys made mistakes but they are heartless greedy assholes.
Even as people were desperately trying to get out of the club (when all of the people were piled up at the front door), one of the brothers is seen on tape trying to remove the banner from the railings in front of the doors. Did nothing to try to help anyone.
      Greedy sob's.
So, yes, mistakes happen. But these two men are responsible for 100 people dying and I would bet that they don't even worry about it. As long as they have their money in their pockets, they don't care about anyone.

shelley noname I totally agree with you Shelley in all you say. We all do make mistakes but they didn't intend for this tragic thing to happen. You see what they're going through. You see them even crying at times. We're all capable of making those same mistakes, or someone that we know. It's not right to judge and point fingers when you don't know what those men themselves are going through. Even to this day. Something they will have to deal with for the rest of they're lives. I feel bad for everyone involved. May God be with them as well as all the families victims. Amen!!
