THE HEART PARK Old Site Memorial of The RI Station Nightclub Fire
Shaky hand-held camera! Not for the motion sick!
Here's a little video that I filmed of The Heart Park circa 2005. The surface was still mostly dirt at that time. I should have filmed it again in the summer of 2006. By then, a lush green lawn had filled in the entire place, leaving no scars. Love was streaming up through every blade of grass. It was quite beautiful. I am very glad that I got to know it before I moved west at the end of 2007.
I often see the old memorial described as "creepy" or "spooky," but I never felt that. It had good vibes. Sure, displaying 100 wooden crosses which looked like roadside car crash markers all in one place was a bit startling. Yet the love shone through.
I've read that the strings of plastic rosary beads on many of the crosses may have been those 'show me your tits' Mardi Gras beads. Ha! I hope that is true. It adds joy.
For a quirky summation of the pilgrims to the site in its early days, read the article "6,557 Miles To Nowhere" by Chuck Klosterman which appeared in Spin Magazine's December 2003 issue.

White Snake, a shitty band of has beens. Pathetic all around.
Seeing the raw footage was a eye opener especially seeing some people jumping the fence while burning alive and the screams going silent eerie as fuck and such a horrible event God bless everyone involved in this incident
"jumping the fence while burning alive" That sounds like some other fire.
@@myoldvhstapesI think they're referring to the person you see running from the entrance on fire
must of been a tough job trying to identify all the burned up bodies
Especially with a faker claiming his 5' 2" girlfriend Jessica Simpson was a victim! That actually happened. (Must've is the contraction for must have. "Of" is never a verb.)
Fire, motorcycle accident, and more? This man hacking
Worshipping Satan one minute and in hell the next.
Democrat state cost lives
Man that wrestling tie is was tasteless
😢 sorry you guys
This guy's marriage and attitude towards his family is an example for all real men to aspire to.
The fact he said a victim was still alive when he was found is insane. She was on fire for over an hour.
There were both a woman and a man wheeled out alive around the same time as Mike was. They can all be seen in Greg Best's footage if the links in the description still work. I left timestamps. Surely the other two were also protected under many layers of decedents. The man was less burned than the woman. The heat alone was enough to kill and cause grievous injury, it may not have been flame.
@@myoldvhstapesjust insane they were able to survive. I wouldn’t want to live with that ptsd and survivors guilt
I believe in God. I have witnessed supernatural and miracles in a strange way. I feel that this man's life had his purpose to live, and it was not his time. For all the victims, its's difficult and upsetting to think of the horror and agony they felt. Why would God let this happen? It is hypocritical to claim this was a miracle, but still extraordinary he survived. I am doing research for a paper on tragedy and grief/loss. I wish to give my greatest condolences to all the victims, their families and the community. May God have mercy on their souls. Simply extraordinary story of survival.
I don't believe in God because I was born in Central Europe and was given science books instead of the bible.
@@enid9911you can believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior. Your past or future means nothing. Accept Him now, He’s the best!!
There is nothing cool about pyrotechnics
Way to go Democrats! Go easy on criminals, as usual. .... lets focus on defunding the police right? Its Sickening.
This guy is David Dunn from Unbreakable.
At 5:46 he remembers the screams lasting 20-30 minutes, but in reality the flames engulfed the entrance within 5 minutes. Adrenaline stretched those minutes into an eternity for him.
In the past few months, I finally found the evidence again showing that the atrium room collapse occurred after midnight- It's in the NIST report. That's around the time Mike was rescued, so he was trapped for an hour (He was seen in Greg Best's footage.) Two others were ALSO rescued alive at that time. Whether they were screaming or not, I do not know.
Maybe he meant 20-30 seconds?
Oh my God. His father is his spirit guide. 😭❤️
The fact that he survived a near death experience very similar to the way his father died is so eerie! He definitely has a divine purpose.
He knew about the foam somebody new when using that glue was flammable it has a label on the tube of glue while they were glued together
I agree. Even discounting the foam, the spray can of adhesive glue was obviously a major fire risk. THEN they coated the foam in black spray paint (and also glitter, if John Barylick is correct in "Killer Show.") It is absurdly negligent to use spray paint where smokers congregate.
No club or public building should be allowed to operate without a working sprinkler system.
The common gossip about this club is that it didn't need a sprinkler system due to a 'grandfather' exception. That is not true. It WAS required to have sprinklers when it changed use from a sit-down restaurant to a nightclub. Yet another thing the Fire Marshall turned a blind eye to.
What a great young man! Well done indeed! Raul, you have right values at the top of your priority list, that's why you are still here, you are an example of the right type of person, so keep living right and you will survive it all.
This is one of the most remarkable things I have watched in my 37 years of being. What a cool, calm and collected man Mike is.
Do you have bad dreams?
I think about you often 🫶
I wanna see the guy who recorded it all on his VHS
Me? I'm a woman. Or do you mean Brian Butler, the man who filmed the fire? He was a professional videographer for WPRI, the channel where club owner Jeff Derderian was a reporter.
@@myoldvhstapes the original video I saw on TH-cam was start to finish, started inside kinda near the stage, camera man noticed the fire and got outta there, but still got pretty much the whole thing. I say guy because in the video he yells “is anybody in there?” And also said something else. I’m guessing that was Brian Butler if that’s the only other footage? I didn’t know that
Yes, that was Brian Butler. After the deadly crowd crush at the E2 nightclub in Chicago three nights earlier, Jeff Derderian wanted to do a piece on nightclub safety using his own club as an example. Butler mostly filmed random candids of the attendees, which can sometimes be found as a clip called "Before the Fire." He was done and ready to leave when Great White was about to come on, so he decided to stay for a few more minutes.
That fire code is ridiculous. Older buildings are more likely to burn as is! To say they are exempt from fire code law doesn’t add up because it was shown how many years the club passed fire code but that the last time, the foam was missed because the club painted it black knowing full well that it was a highly famous foam.
Yes, they knew the foam was dangerous because they spray painted it and the owner did a story on that foam before not to mention the club had no fire sprinklers and only one exit was being allowed to be used and even that exit just had one door open with security saying it’s policy to keep the other one locked closed.
Every great once in a while, my interest in this horrific event is rekindled and I start watching the documentaries and reading the accounts over and I can't get over how appalling the whole thing was and the sheer greed and reckless disregard for safety and human life that caused it. THE person who was ultimate responsible above everyone else was the one person who came out unscathed: THE FIRE MARSHAL, If he had done his job, this entire thing would have been prevented, PERIOD. How could any of these other people, from the band manager to the owners, ultimately be blamed when it was the fire marshal whose job it was to make sure such an unsafe venue wasn't allowed to operate in the first place? Whether it was overpacked or not, ultimately the responsibility STILL rests with the person who had the authority and responsibility to make them remove that material from those walls or shut the place down, PERIOD. It's disgusting that no real justice was ever served in this case.
Do you still have these tapes, including the news segments? Very interested in transferring them in a higher quality. My channel has some examples of other tape transfers I've done.
Thanks, Ajace! What I have not published: Tedious footage of Gov. Carcieri's pressers, Dan Biechele's long sentencing hearing, many brief (such as one-minute) local tv news updates, a shorter interview with Mike Vargas, etc. I live near Grand Central Library in downtown L.A. In early 2020, it opened the "Octavia Lab" which included a VHS transfer machine. I was gung-ho to do it back then, but they closed for the pandemic right before I was scheduled to take a required in-person class on how to use the lab. When it finally reopened to the public nearly 3 years later, I had lost enthusiasm. Gee male me at heyyoumarley. If you want something to upload right now, browse Ken's google drive of the AG's data release: drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B1FWXWcUSCRDZ09fMVhZMVROQUk?resourcekey=0-wN2PgGGMc5QtpyQbpxqf6g "1st Disclosure" contains a trove of videos. Years ago, I tried downloading the Larry King interview. The audio was fine, but on my end the video came out as one still frame every 60 seconds instead of a moving picture! So I gave up on that venture. Ken has stated that he actually wants others to put those videos on the internet, so he is not claiming any ownership.
Thanks so much! I'll work on uploading some of that footage over the coming months. I'll also be sending you an e-mail shortly.
Such a Horrific Fire and an awful way these people died . This place was entirely consumed by fire in less than 6 minutes !! These people didn’t stand a Chance . God Bless All Those who perished and God Bless the Survivors who were lucky enough to to have escaped with there lives . 🕊️🕊️😔😔
Wow I never heard this young mans story, how horrifying but also amazing that he survived all that.what???😮
The Fire Inspector should have been charged for passing the building on the check.
had me in tears. what a harrowing experience.
If you did survive this as said, bless you. However, watching the video, I cannot in anyway see a human surviving hellfire, smoke and heat in the raging hell I saw. Just no way.
Hi Keith, If the link in the description to Greg Best's footage is still working, you can see Mike being wheeled away from the door area shortly after the glass atrium room collapse. Pages 41 and 44 of the NIST report claim 12:07 or 12:15 am as the approximate time of the collapse. So a full hour after the fire began: www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/GOVPUB-C13-a3976672cebdbe486ff4ba4c416159be/pdf/GOVPUB-C13-a3976672cebdbe486ff4ba4c416159be.pdf Mike was lying on the floor on his side, up against a wall that never burned. His face was open to the outside air. He was insulated from the fire above by layers of bodies.
@@myoldvhstapesthanks for the information. A true miracle.
What a family and friends. I'm so happy that Pam at least knew they were there. True love for their child 😮💨
I’m so glad that Mike Vargas survived the Nightclub Fire, words can’t express how shocked and saddened I am for those who perished in the fire. RIP to the 100 people who died and my heart goes out to those who survived.
Arguably the most amazing survival story I’ve ever heard…and to hear he’s dodged death a half dozen OTHER times!!!? He’s the living embodiment of the movie UNBREAKABLE…..
Only white people,,🎉🎉🎉🥮
Mike is Hispanic. Vargas is a name of Spanish origin.
Only a troll.
the man cheated death so many times
Am I the only one who sees the driver of the WHJY van jump in and screw out of there
The only one who showed true remorse. Jack Russell was the boss of this man and company....he should have been charged too along with others .
Spot on Mr. Mr. McLaughlin. The families did not get a trial amd this was their only chance to voice theit thoughts. Justice was not served.....people that should have been charged weren't and the ones that were basically got a slap on the wrist.
I think the most messed up part is that there was another dude who survived like that but drowned because of the water from the firehoses.
It's an urban legend. Dr. LaPosata read out the causes of death for all 100 decedents. Most had multiple contributing factors, but water/drowning was never brought up.
Gina is an inspiration. I just suffered from a life threatening medical emergency and I hope I can be as strong as her.
I had gone there once. Unbelievable that someone thought lighting off pyro in there would be ok. It was like the perfect storm....the pyro, foam, way overcrowded and bouncers who block the door in a fire and a negligent fire inspector and owners. It was a rundown roadhouse. There were more that should have been charged. Innocent people payed with their lives and so many with physical and emotiinal wounds. Never should have happened.
That judge is horrible 😢
Jack Russell is the boss of the person who lit the pyrotechnics. Jack Russell said it was in the contract they'd be using pyrotechnics. Where is that contract? He should be sitting right along with the Derdarians.
He either lied or was mistaken. It's not in the contract/rider. drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B1FWXWcUSCRDZ09fMVhZMVROQUk?resourcekey=0-wN2PgGGMc5QtpyQbpxqf6g Look in "Phase 4" at "out of state venues" to see the rider (most items need to be double-clicked to open.) It was the same one used on all of their tour stops.
This is a travesty that low of sentence
No one left anyone in there for a cashbox. She was out of line there.
Julie Mellini, bartender at the back bar, took her cash register drawer with her when she got out. She handed it to club owner Jeff Derderian in a parking lot. He took the time to walk with it through snow around to the deserted back of the club and laid it on the ground. It was photographed there the next morning. Derderian apologist and acquaintance Scott James describes the incident in his book as Julie handing Jeff the drawer, who "threw" it into the snow. That's one hell of a throwing arm to fling it from the front of the building to the back and have it land upright, money intact! After that, Jeff spent something like two continuous hours on a borrowed cell phone as victims were still being rescued. And he moved his car.
Correction: James used "tossed" instead of "threw."
As someone who lives for live music I’ve been in many venues over the years seeing countless bands play, you never expect a night out gigging to end like this, you know how lucky you are Mike, your survival is a miracle, no doubts about that. I first learnt about this awful event a few years ago, my heart goes out to everyone affected by this tragedy.
What a remarkable gentle man. God bless him and his family. May all those affected by tragedy find comfort and May the departed rest in peace 🕊️
