Donna sounded like a great and wonderful soul. Sorry for the loss. It's heartbreaking tragic event. That should of never happened. Common sense. 15 foot sparkles in a 12 foot ceiling. With the foam on the walls. He should of new better. They should had more exit's not locked. And sprinkler system in the club. All kinds stupid problems that should of never happened. RIP Donna and the other 99 victims and family's. So... SORRY.

Rob you are so courageous. Thank you for becoming an advocate for fire safety. We must NEVER forget The Station disaster and the 100 innocent souls who perished. There is so much blame to go around. The club owners, the fire marshall, the tour manager and Jack Russell all had a part in the tragedy. It never should have happened and thanks to people like Rob Feeney hopefully it never will again.

It's mind boggling, incomprehensible, inconceivable, that anyone would even fathom or hesitate for one second on voting for safety over aesthetics. A fire in any form is the most terrifying thing anyone can go through. Those who survive bear not only physical scars but also bear damage on so many levels.
When I was still living in Cuba, back in 1975, I lost 25 college classmates in a bus fire. I was supposed to go on that leisure trip. However, I was under the impression that we were all going to transported in a proper vehicle equipped with air conditioning and emergency exits, a normal bus. Instead they packed everyone like cattle in a poorly built Girón bus which were notorious for breaking down, no emergency exits, and with windows that could barely fit a small child through in case of an accident. I was extremely angry at the university officials and organizers of the trip. I even told my classmates to not board the bus and that we should just take public transportation to the beach destined to hold the event. Only 4 of us stayed behind and I actually decided not to go at all. On the return trip the bus was sideswiped by a military truck and fell into a deep ditch off the side of the road trapping everyone. A fire ensued and everyone perished. The horror didn't end there though. Amid the shock of losing so many colleagues, I was forced under threat of being expelled from the University to help with identifying the bodies. There was nothing identifiable, nothing. All were burnt beyond recognition. I walked away in a state of shock and went home. I also dropped out of my Alma Mater. 5 years later I left the country.
Im 63 now, and to this day, I have nightmares about fires. I also become absolutely incensed when I see the complacency and disregard of the greedy practices of choosing profit over safety.
The Station Nightclub fire was a disgrace and those responsible will forever have blood on their hands.
My heart goes out to every victim and survivor. You're all in my heart and in my prayers.

That is absolutely devastating. You have such good intuition and knowledge of safety. My heart aches that you lost your classmates so tragically after you did everything you could to prevent them from boarding that coffin on wheels, and that those scumbags forced you to see all of them like that... That is just vile. I'm so sorry. I send prayers and well wishes. I pray for their families, too, that are still feeling that loss.

@@shamadayart thank you for your kind words. The worst part of the whole ordeal was that there were no consequences paid. After all, a communist military truck was involved and only God knows if there was a high ranking officer who was drunk behind the wheel. I dropped out of med school a year later and in 2 more years I left the country. But the memories never die.

Thanks for putting this together. Such a great story of overcoming adversity. It’s important that we don’t forget what happened. It could have been any of us who listened to bands like that in 2003.
A building burned down across from where I lived once. Nobody died but that coulda been me living there. Eventually we moved into the replacement building and it had sprinklers and fireproof doors. And my first thought was why that can’t be the standard everywhere? Why is a safe building an anomaly?
Getting those sprinkler laws passed was huge. So many greedy and negligent business owners out there. I know some. All they care about is money. Short term profit. They don’t have the ability to consider that one mishap could wipe out everything they have and do worse to their patrons and staff. Getting this passed was a great service.

That club was too small for pyrotechnics. And all that material used in the club was highly flammable as it was built in 1946, although renovated over the decades it was still made of wood. The exit routes for emergencies were totally useless. This is all public knowledge now. It should help preventing this from happening again. Rob is doing well all things considered.

I was born on February 12, 2003. This happened when I was 8 days old. It always stuck with me due to the sheer loss of life and the proximity to my date of birth. I was in North Carolina at that time, and of course I had no idea that we lost 100 innocent lives that day. Nobody in those families knew that eight days later their lives would change forever. Feeney got out through one of the 3-4 windows broken in the NE corner of the atrium. Most survivors of the atrium got out the one panel running North-South next to the stairs that were next to the front door. That was kicked out by survivor Brian O’Donnell at the same time as West Warwick PO Mark Knott hit it with his asp baton. That particular window had been replaced several years earlier with a
single thick pane of glass that was cheaper than putting in the double-thermal pane glass to match the others. Why? A paraplegic who used hand controls on his car lost control one night and his car damaged the front of the building. Also-several people escaped through the lower metal panel in window #4 (left to right). That’s the one Butler used his left foot to dislodge, as seen in his video. No one appears to have gotten out any of the windows west of that.

Doesn't look like it. At least for buildings that have no federal use. Building codes, which determine what types of buildings require sprinkler systems are usually left to local jurisdictions. Unfortunately, it's a money issue and people who have money will lobby against having to spend their own money even if it saves the lives of their customers and the firefighters who have to go in and rescue them.
