Great video - thanks… my border collie pup is just over 6 months and we have to walk about a K to our park. She has just started to chase cars (while on leash) - I am struggling to find a strategy to stop her. I fear she has already started to practise a bad habit. The distraction initially is so exciting there is no focus on me until after the event. Any suggestions pls

Hey Sarah! I sure do! Sorry I just missed yours:(
I’d add in a few things:
      - Distance to the trigger.
Work her at a greater distance so that she can remain under threshold but still see the car. Slowly come closer as she gets better. Do these as structured training sessions rather than walks. So cut out walks and instead do sessions at a local park with traffic passing by.
      - the other part is drive satisfaction.
I’d be doing a lot of tug work and flirt pole work (a toy attached to the rope and pole). If we satisfy her drive to herd and chase then she isn’t as frustrated when out on walks which leads to car chasing!
      Hope that makes sense!

@@jamiethedogtrainer1735 hmm yes I have reorganised a few things while waiting for your answer and pleased to say I just needed time to sort it out (not being a professional trainer I just had to think about it more 🤷‍♀️)
I have found a less busy way to navigate my way to the park.
I use a flirt pole and dinner times to reinforce the ‘leave it’ command which she does really well.
If we have to be close to traffic I try to predict her chase mode and get her to sit and leave it while it passes.
All the above is getting better however as soon as I lose concentration she can catch me off guard and lunge … it will take a while I imagine but thank you for replying - it’s good to know I was on the right track 🐾🐾

So that was two years ago! Yes she is a lot better now. Lots of work with a professional trainer (balanced trainer) and utube trainers like Michael Ellis.
Doing training exercises for heeling sit come stay (just say 5 mins) before the walk also gets their mind into work mode.
She is still very focused on traffic but does not lunge or pull any more. However her body language tells me she is hyper focused on cars as they wizz past.
I don’t let her off anywhere there is nearby traffic - I am sure she would chase them 🤷‍♀️
Every other aspect of training and engagement is great - we even do sheep herding occasionally which is a great outlet.
She’s not a Velcro dog but is great company and playful - just love the dog you have ❤

For how long do you train each step? Can you walk the dog between training sessions even if they pull? If it takes them weeks to learn how to walk, does that mean they can't be walk for weeks or do we go on walks even if they pull? I'm not sure how to do it 😅 thanks.

However long it takes your dog to catch on to the step. And not necessarily, you can still do training on your day to day walk it’s more training focused so it takes a bit longer. If they’re use to long distance walks while pulling, unfortunately that means shorter distance more training focused walks. They still get mental exercise which can tire them out too. At least this has been my experience. Like it says in the video in the beginning, let them get familiar with the are first and get energy out before the “walk”. Well your dog usually is already familiar with its daily walking area so you can play with them inside a bit before walking then start training the moment you walk out the door using the same methods here. You can also teach the focus on you in the home and slowly move outside. It’s definitely a process, especially if they’re older! I was watching this to see if I would learn some tricks but I’ve been basically doing everything he says with my two older dogs who unfortunately never loose leash trained. My puppy is amazing at it trying to walk all 3 is tough ! I’ve been walking them one at a time and when i want to walk them together, I take them out for a hike or a field first because they’re all too tired to pull anyway so they get tons of praise! Sorry so lengthy, hope that helps!
