Stop Your Dog's Leash Pulling and Walk Beside You

  • How to stop your dog's leash pulling and train your dog to walk at your side. In this video I am working with a large dog that has a history of pulling hard on the leash while walking.
In this video, I demonstrate why it important to not let your dog pull through pressure on the leash.
I also discuss how to train the dog to walk at your side by using circles and a moving backwards technique that I use.
In the video, I am using a 6ft leash and a star mark collar. There are lots of various equipment options on the market. Personally, I prefer various limited slip collars to teach the dog to walk nice on the leash. Limited slip collars include martingales, star marks, and prong collars.
The technique will also work with other types of equipment including front clip harnesses.

One of the better leash pulling videos out there. You start with a dog that isn't trained. You show and explain techniques . You show a dog that improves.

You’re not alone, it’s as hard as learning a new language. I feel like I’ve failed most days but my dog needs me not to and he’s large breed, only 12 months old so my expectations need to be adjusted. Plus he’s dog reactive but not aggressive. I’m living in hope 🤣sometimes all you can do is just hang in there 😥

Aww don’t say that. The closest comparison that comes to mind is my autistic daughter. In year 3 she started a school program and a loooooot of what the teacher was doing was really working. Stuff that we had failed at over and over. That’s when I decided to surrender my pride and just follow. At the end of the day they’re trained for this and we aren’t. So it’s ok that it takes us longer. Even if it’s much longer.

Same. I have a rescue pit bull and German Shepherd. I've had this Pit Bull for almost a year walking 2-3 times daily avergaing 3-5 miles total.
It takes me 30 heavy pops essentially forcing him away from barking dogs behind a fence. The pop by itself doesn't seem to do anything. I am essentially lifting/dragging on and off until I get far enough away from the dog, rabbit, or people. At this point I wager neighbors think it's abuse.

And I've taken a few training classes but she is so powerful and fast and smart. His video showed a big dog and how to correct that pulling after tugging back. I was basically spending my entire walk with her just piling as hard as I could to keep her back at my side the entire time. Now I know to turn in. Thanks

We have a Bernese Mountain Dog and this is what our walking looks like! I’ve tried several types of training but I think I’m missing the consistency. Our problem is she walks well when it’s just the two of us. But if my kids go with us, Rosie feels the need to pull me everywhere, even when she and I are in front of the kids. It’s as if she’s feeding off their energy and excitement. Family hikes or walks to the bus stop definitely become frustrating. Thank you for the tips!

    • @MIZZKIE
      @MIZZKIE 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

"Feeding off their energy" is EXACTLY what is happening.
You should watch Cesar Millan's "The Dog Whisperer" series, because it constantly demonstrates how energy affects a dog. Having the correct kind of energy when dealing with a dog makes a huge difference, even before you do any actual training. It is a concept that EVERYBODY - even Cesar haters - NEEDS to know.

I have a mastiff who just turned a year old, he's 130 pounds and used to pull like crazy.... I took him to school! His trainer suggested a pronged collar (which I've never liked) BUT when she tried him with it, he was immediately a different dog... he no longer pulls me everywhere...and it doesnt hurt him!! ( must be used properly) If he sees it, he sits and waits to have it put on. I am having the same problem now with my 5 month old shar pei pulling and pulling...a regular collar is bad since he pulls hard enough to make himself throw up...a harness makes him pull just as much if not more(at least its not on his neck anymore) ...my next trip to the pet store I'll be picking up another pronged training collar and start working with him. It makes a huge difference!!!!!

Our dog is 30 kg and 3 years old. She pulls hard when we walk.... but not today! I've watched lots of videos and they just haven't worked for my dog, but this tactic was perfect for her. Oh my word, thank you! I only watched the first 6 minutes and thought, let me try what I've seen so far. I practiced this with my dog for 20 min. rather than a normal walk and she was walking SO nicely by the end of our time. I tried to be aware to pull her back EVERY time she pulled, and take steps backwards having her follow me. That was a helpful thought. I felt confident at the end and she started looking to me for direction. Can't wait to try it many times over the next week.

I really appreciate your step by step guidance. I’m about to implement this. Wish me luck. My dog is 18mths and 25lbs and pulls like crazy. I’ve tried other methods but this looks different so I’ll give a try for several weeks. Really hope this works. I’m replaying this a few times to make sure I understand what you are doing. Also bookmarked your step by step nail cutting. Thank you!

Well I’m back after my very first try and IT WORKED!!! After months and months of being yanked around by this little 25lb dog, he actually walked by my side for the VERY FIRST TIME.
After reading the comments, I thought I’d have to buy a collar vs a harness but nope! Worked just fine with the harness. I noticed I had to keep him on a VERY short slack leesh at first. Literally within 5mins he started to look to me and follow my pace.
I could tell he was confused at first like” hey! What’s happening? I’m always in control.” LOL 😂 But this was both easy and effective! Gonna keep the training going because I know it ain’t over. 😁 Thank you SO much!

I used this method on my BMC puppy and within 24 hours he is walking within the confines of his 6ft leash. Our walks are pleasant versus a battle. Thank you!

My Great Pyrenees starts jumping around and pulling crazy when he sees people and dogs. It’s so hard to get him under control. Definitely trying this method. Thank you :)

Really great leash training! Had taken puppy classes before but for some reason leash training wasn’t going so well. From a lot of treats, praises and peanut butter I was only able to keep him from over pulling on leash but not have him follow along. One training section of this and he has started to walk off leash pretty fast and good. More practice and he will be perfect! Thank you!!! Was really thinking I wouldn’t ever be able to enjoy walking with my dog.

Great video. I have a 3 year old boxer that's getting better with not pulling but still not where I want her to be. Might take her off the harness and put her back on the chocker chain for a bit.
