I did this install a few weeks ago on a 2021 Tri Glide. The only thing I will add is that I used plastic clamps (like the one you use to close potato chip bags) to hold down the insulation and aluminum on the end and then along the heat shield while I was forming it. Works great.
I installed the kit on my 2021 Road Glide Limited after your last video and it significantly reduced the heat I felt on my right leg. Great recommendation and I never would have known about this if you hadn't highlighted it in your last video. Thanks!!
Hey Doc!!! When I did this install on my wife's 2018 Tri Glide I used a Craftsman screw driver that has a ball end on the handle that really helped to make the material form into the shields along with some spring clamps that I use when woodworking to hold in the material place while re=installing the worm clamps. Glad DEI sent you the kit so folks can get an idea of what's involved. Hope you and the family and Low Country HD have a Very Merry Christmas!!!!!!
I installed these on my Road Glide about 6 weeks ago. It’s probably the best $75 that I have spent on the bike. My bike has a Screaming Eagle Stage 4 131” build. It gets hot on the right side. The DEI heat shield kit has made a remarkable difference in heat. I would recommend them.
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson I kinda stopped drinking beer after the Bud Light fiasco. I didn’t really drink much of it before the boycott, but I definitely am not drinking it now, I’ll opt for bourbon and coke instead!
I did this mod after watching your earlier video. M8 Heritage. I had to get the trace and cut kit proving once again that I learned all I need to know in kindergarten. I agree with your tips. Creating a template on the felt added a level of challenge particularly since it is not still. I got it cut out pretty well but realized I didn't keep it completely aligned and straight when I traced it onto the metal and insulation. Hardest on the skinny and bendy parts. The other challenge was figuring out the cutouts and where to put them. Had to keep adjusting. I also had a hard time figuring out the optimal width which resulted in me having to trim a lot after I got it installed. I think it would have been much less fiddly had it been a custom cut for my bike. But, if you are patient, as you say, you can do it. I did it over a couple of evenings in the dining room. I have had the insulation installed for a few weeks. Did it make a difference in the felt heat on my softail? Maybe some but not really that noticeable. I don't think I would recommend for my bike, particularly having to trace and cut. Interested to hear the report from the motor officer.
I ordered and installed this kit on my ‘14 Ultra Limited right after I saw your initial video but I wasn’t able to really test it before I had to winterize it. Because the clamps were old in installed new clamps from Amazon. I’m hoping to feel a real difference come next riding season. Until then, I can’t wait to see your review in a few weeks.
Hey doc thanks for the video I haven’t used this product but I rapped my pipes with the carbon heat tape that you don’t have to wet and it is a amazing difference but I wonder how they would compare
Doc, I love this idea, especially for my 2014 Tri Glide trike! One question: although this will help with the heat on the legs, will doing this re direct the heat back to the motor? And making the motor temp higher? What’s your thoughts? Thanks!
@ Thanks for your reply and thoughts! I have this saved in their cart and will proceed with my order. I’ll know my results in spring when the weather breaks here in PA. I’ll be looking for the follow up on this video on LEO thoughts and results on his. 👍🏻 Thanks again for the awesome videos!!
I will be very interested in part 2. We’ve got a 20 Triglide and the heat off the cat at 95+ tends to be a bit much. Anything that helps would be appreciated. Thanks.
I bet this along with the Cool Flo fan I see on the bike will definitely keep the officer comfortable. Since I installed the fan on my bike my wife never complains about the heat anymore.
Can I use the Dei header wrap around the catalytic converter and had enough to go all the way back and under the bike to the crossover pipe it really works well but I can see how this kit would maybe even be a little better I have had it on for 2 years now
I have an 06 Dyna that has exhaust covers, but my 84 Super Glide has exposed pipes. I bought it new, because it was the last model that still had aShovel Head. All the other models had the Evo.
I have Vance n Hines shorties with wrap on them. We'll it's time for new wrap after my Grandson noticed it was coming apart and he helped it. There are no heat shields just wrap. With a little bailing wire could I form the DEI kit around my pipes then wrap? Removing tie wire as I wrap. Or do you think it would help with insulation under wrap
I installed this on my 2008 Road King Stock Exhaust. Jury is still out. That heat has to go somewhere and since it's not radiating out from the pipes it's staying in the system. I think it might be making my bike run hotter which is not a good thing in Southern California. At this point I'm not entirely sure as the system has only been on for a couple three rides.
Great video. I was wondering if you were going to use a piece of PVC pipe to form the curve. I looked at the product after your first video and the shipping costs put me off, it was half the cost of the kit. But after a couples of “OUCH OH CRAP” I think it may be worth it. I have a 2013 Slim with a Bassani exhaust and didn’t see a preformed kit. I guess pair of snips is in order.
Hi Doc, thank you for this video. Don't you think it might help to use some small trpes of double sided adhesive tape to fix the aluminium with the isolation material before assembling? And, we were discussing the DEI equipment. Does this isolation have an influence on the exhaust temperature / lambda sensor / engine control unit? What do you think? Regards from Austria Wolfgang
I found a great way to keep the area where the catalyst is nice and cool. Drill it out. On a serious note.. about the clamps .. DEF TAKE PICS IF U DONT INSTALL HEAT SHIELDS ALL THE TIME. I had a kromewerks heat shield take a dump in the form of a couple welds leaving the chat. KW sent out a new set immediately but the clamps 🗜️ weren’t on there. Had to buy new ones from Menards. The old ones were worn out and a coupe broke coming off. They say don’t ride in the winter bc of the salt . They not kidding bc those clamps got rusty and crappy. Rest of the bike fine 😂.. anyway …. Had to take those shields off 3 times bc I couldn’t get the clamps To feed in from having on the wrong way .. no good access if on the wrong way. Would have saved 30 mins of time I coulda been RIDING if not having to redo a coupe times. *yea using a hooked pick works well to pull the clamps thru
Here's a tip, why don't you just bend / form it by pressing it over the exposed pipe. Since you can see where the clamp's were it should be easy to line it up correctly, then just form it. Thanks
You know people have been commenting on the ill effects of more heat in the pipe. I’m confused because all this is doing is shielding a small area from your body parts. There is 3/4 of the pipe still open. ….Doc

BTW…It DOES NOT rattle. It is sandwiched tightly between the heat shield and the pipe.
If you re tighten after 50 miles
So you are keeping the heat in the exhaust pipe. Great. Is there any problems that can develop if it's so much hotter in the pipe?
Not that I thought of…Doc
from a quick google search it may be beneficial "Keeping the exhaust temperatures high keeps the velocity high, and this improves exhaust scavenging."
